What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a slow or variable upload connection, start with 720p at 30 fps only if your measured upload can sustain the stream bitrate with spare capacity; otherwise use 480p at 30 fps and lower the bitrate. Set the encoder to CBR, use a 2-second keyframe interval, and leave about 20% upload headroom. A stable, lower-resolution stream is better than one that repeatedly drops frames.
Recommended settings at a glance
YouTube’s figures below are live-ingestion encoder recommendations, not settings for uploading a finished video. Use the row matching your encoder codec and resolution. The minimum bitrate is not a guarantee of reliable streaming on a variable connection.
| Codec and profile | YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264, 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 720p30 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 480p30 | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations verified on October 3, 2026. The recommended figures target quality; they are not the upload-speed requirement for every streamer. Choose a sustainable bitrate based on your connection, including audio, and reduce the profile if testing shows instability. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table.
Other encoder settings
- Rate control: CBR for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube recommends 128 kbps stereo.
- Protocol: RTMPS when your encoder supports it.
These settings follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Count audio bitrate as part of the total upload load.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Choose a profile your upload can sustain
- Measure upload speed from the streaming setup. Test on the same network and in the location where you will stream. Download speed does not tell you whether the connection can send the stream to YouTube.
- Allow for shared use and variation. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused and notes that other traffic on a shared network can reduce what is available to your stream. Its guidance says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Start modestly. Try 720p30 if your dependable upload has room for the selected codec’s bitrate plus audio. If it does not, start with 480p30 or lower the bitrate. Do not treat the published minimum as a safe target if your connection fluctuates.
- Set the encoder. Choose CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, supported audio, and RTMPS where available.
- Test under realistic conditions. Include audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Check stream health before and during the event; if you see dropped frames or bandwidth warnings, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again.
For YouTube’s specific advice when connection bandwidth is inadequate, see its encoder settings guidance. Performance varies with congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, competing traffic, and encoder choice, so repeat the test at the time and under the conditions you expect to stream.
What to change when the stream buffers or drops frames
- Upload is inconsistent or stream health degrades: lower the video bitrate first, or move from 720p30 to 480p30. Retest rather than assuming a brief speed-test result represents the whole event.
- Other devices are using the connection: pause large uploads, downloads, and other bandwidth-heavy activity where possible. YouTube notes that shared-network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.
- Streaming over unreliable Wi-Fi: if practical, connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet and test again. A cable may avoid some Wi-Fi problems, but it does not increase the internet plan’s upload capacity; the measured outbound speed still sets the limit.
- Stream health reports inadequate bandwidth: choose a lower resolution or bitrate and check again. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice includes lowering the chosen resolution when bandwidth is insufficient.
For a connection-limited stream, do not raise the frame rate or resolution in pursuit of sharpness until the lower profile is stable. Higher resolution and 60 fps can need more bitrate; choose the bitrate recommendation for the exact codec, frame rate, and resolution rather than reusing a figure from another profile.

Resolution, viewer quality, and latency
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch; you do not need to send a separate stream for each device. Transcoding does not restore detail absent from a low-resolution source, and viewers will not all receive identical quality. YouTube describes this process in its live encoder settings guidance.
Latency is the delay between capture and playback, separate from bitrate and resolution. YouTube warns that lower latency may increase playback buffering. If real-time interaction is not central to the event, prioritize a stable feed over minimizing delay. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a different option from tuning a live encoder on your own computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live stream. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
