To improve a pixelated YouTube live stream on your phone, open the stream’s Settings → Quality, choose Advanced if it appears, and select the highest resolution that plays without frequent buffering. For a lasting preference, open your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences and adjust the option for mobile networks.
Change the quality for the live stream you’re watching
- Tap the live-stream player to show its controls.
- Tap Settings, then Quality.
- If Advanced is available, open it and select the highest resolution that plays reliably. If it is not available, choose among the options YouTube shows, such as Auto, Higher picture quality or Data saver.
If a higher resolution looks sharper but the stream starts buffering, step down one resolution or return to Auto. Higher picture quality can use more data and buffer more often; Data saver lowers picture quality and can help videos start faster. Menu labels and available resolutions can vary by device, app version, locale and stream.
Set a default for mobile networks
- In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings → Video quality preferences.
- Choose the preference you want for mobile networks. You can set a separate preference for Wi-Fi.
Higher picture quality favors detail but uses more data and may buffer more. Data saver uses lower picture quality. Auto lets YouTube choose based on viewing conditions. YouTube’s documented options and exact labels can vary; not every live stream offers manual resolution controls.
If the picture becomes pixelated again
- Compare the same stream on Wi-Fi. If it looks better there, retry on mobile where reception is stronger. This comparison can help isolate a connection-related issue, but it does not prove mobile reception is the only cause.
- Compare with other videos. If other videos look sharp but one live stream does not, the quality of the broadcaster’s incoming stream may be limiting what you can watch. A viewer cannot change the broadcaster’s encoder settings.
- Compare the app with a supported browser. YouTube lists browser support among the factors that can affect playback quality. If only one platform has the problem, that comparison may help narrow it down; it is not proof that the browser is at fault.
- Use the best stable resolution, not just the highest one. A lower setting that plays smoothly may be more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly buffers.
YouTube says it changes stream quality based on viewing conditions. Connection speed is one factor; player or screen size, the original video quality and browser support also matter. There is no single mobile-speed threshold established here that guarantees a sharp picture.

If you control the broadcast
Viewer playback quality and creator encoder settings are different. Changing the quality menu on your phone cannot improve a weak or low-quality incoming broadcast. For a stream you operate, YouTube advises choosing an encoder quality your connection can maintain, testing upload bitrate, testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
YouTube’s H.264 encoder guidance gives examples of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are creator-side bitrate recommendations, not required download speeds for viewers.
