If OBS is showing a black screen, first find where the picture disappears: in the OBS preview, in a local recording, or only in YouTube. That distinction tells you whether to troubleshoot the selected capture source, OBS’s output, or YouTube’s incoming stream. Also note the source type—display, window, game, camera, image, or media file—and whether you’re using Windows, macOS, or Linux; the right fix depends on both.
Find where the black screen starts
Before changing settings, check the same scene and content in three places. This separates a missing source from a recording or delivery problem.
- OBS preview: Is the source visible on the OBS canvas? Confirm the intended scene is active, the source is enabled, and the correct display, window, camera, image, or media file is selected. Check whether another source sits above and covers it in the scene.
- Local recording: Make a short recording and play it outside OBS. If the preview is visible but the recording is black, investigate the OBS output and recording configuration rather than replacing the capture source.
- YouTube: If the preview and recording look right but the YouTube player is black or stream health reports a problem, check YouTube Live Control Room, encoder status, and the outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and connection strength (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).
Write down which of these first shows the failure, along with your operating system and source type. A black camera input, a hidden browser window, and a healthy OBS preview with a failed YouTube feed are different problems.
If the OBS preview is black
Check the source and its signal
- Verify that the source is present in the active scene and is not hidden, muted visually, cropped away, or covered by another source.
- Open the source’s properties and confirm it points to the intended display or window. A renamed, closed, minimized, or replaced window can leave a window capture pointed at the wrong target.
- For a camera or external video input, check that the device is connected, powered, selected in the source properties, and not already in use by another application. For an image or media file, confirm the file path still resolves and the file can play or open.
- Check operating-system privacy permissions for screen recording or camera access when relevant. Permission labels and locations vary by operating system and version.
Windows laptop with integrated and discrete graphics
On some Windows laptops, GPU selection and display-capture method can affect what OBS captures. OBS’s laptop guide describes the issue as historical and documents a newer Windows 10 capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later with OBS 27 or later. Its instructions recommend keeping OBS on the default high-power GPU and trying the Windows 10 capture method manually if automatic selection fails (OBS laptop troubleshooting). That guide is dated 2021, so check your current Windows and OBS versions and the source’s properties before changing graphics preferences. Do not treat this as a universal fix for other operating systems or source types.

If OBS looks right but the recording or stream is black
Preview is visible; local recording is black
Check OBS’s recording output path and configuration, then make another short test recording. If you use different settings or output routes for recording and streaming, check the route that produced the black file. Keep the test short until you have confirmed that both the image and audio are being recorded as expected.
Preview and recording work; YouTube is black or unhealthy
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview, stream health, and any displayed errors. Verify that OBS is sending to the intended event with the correct stream key, then check encoder status and upload connectivity. YouTube’s guidance calls for checking both encoder output and the outbound connection; changing a working OBS capture source will not fix an ingestion or connection issue (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).

Treat a stream key as a credential: do not post it publicly or include it in screenshots. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s streaming settings and update the encoder that uses it.
Separate capture trouble from performance trouble
A black source is not the same symptom as dropped frames, stuttering, or an “encoding overloaded” warning. OBS says rendering uses GPU resources; its performance guidance recommends reducing unnecessary GPU work. On Windows, running OBS as administrator is one troubleshooting step for performance issues—not a guaranteed way to restore a black capture source (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).

- Temporarily simplify the scene and disable nonessential heavy browser sources or effects, then compare the preview and test output.
- Check OBS’s status and logs for rendering or encoding warnings, and check the computer’s CPU and GPU load while the showcase is running.
- Do not assume a computer is capable merely because it meets OBS’s basic requirements. OBS notes that the load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; the necessary configuration cannot be established without checking the actual system and workload (OBS system requirements).
Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test. That makes it easier to identify which change affects the picture, performance, or stream health.
Verify recovery before relying on the 24/7 stream
- Test the actual showcase scene before going live. Include the kind of product movement, transitions, overlays, and audio that will run continuously. A still desktop preview alone does not prove a moving showcase is healthy.
- Check the YouTube preview and health messages. Confirm the expected product image and audio appear in Live Control Room, and resolve any error messages before relying on the event.
- Use stable encoder settings for your connection. For the RTMP/RTMPS profile covered by YouTube’s guidance, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate based on the selected quality and available upload capacity, not on a setting copied without regard to the connection (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Check the viewer-facing event. YouTube’s encoder tips recommend checking event accessibility from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. Confirm that the public-facing player shows the intended image and that audio is present (YouTube encoder tips).
- Keep monitoring after recovery. A successful test is evidence that the current setup works under those test conditions, not a guarantee that a continuous stream will never fail. Watch stream health and messages during operation.
When HLS is relevant
YouTube documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs that are unsupported over RTMP, but it requires compatible encoder settings and has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. It is not a first-line remedy for an unexplained black screen; consider it only when the chosen codec or protocol requires it (YouTube encoder settings).

Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| One source is black in OBS preview | Confirm the active scene, source visibility, source order, selected target, permissions, and whether the source itself has a signal. |
| Display capture is black on a Windows laptop | Check the current Windows and OBS versions, capture method, and GPU selection against OBS’s version-qualified laptop guidance. |
| OBS preview works but local recording is black | Inspect the recording output path and configuration, then make and review a short test recording. |
| Preview and recording work but YouTube is black | Inspect Live Control Room preview, stream health and errors, the selected event and stream key, encoder status, and upload connection. |
| Picture freezes, stutters, or OBS reports overload | Check CPU/GPU load and OBS performance warnings; simplify the scene and reduce unnecessary GPU work before retesting. |
| It works while still but fails during the showcase | Test representative motion, transitions, and audio, then watch YouTube stream health during the moving test. |

Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account).
- Monthly billing: $9.99 per month.
See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
Copyright and continuous showcase content
Before running a prerecorded showcase continuously, confirm that you have the rights to every video, music track, and other material in it, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies. A technically healthy feed does not establish that the content is authorized or eligible to remain live. Avoid assuming that looping or having permission to use one element settles every policy question.
