To rebroadcast a prerecorded event as a continuous YouTube Live stream, send the video file through a live encoder to YouTube and configure the encoder’s source or playlist to repeat. A YouTube watch-page replay is not a live broadcast. With a local setup, the computer, encoder, power and upload connection must keep running; looping and recovery depend on the encoder or service you choose.

What continuous rebroadcasting means

YouTube Live receives a live feed from an encoder. For a prerecorded event, the encoder plays the file and sends its audio and video to YouTube as a broadcast. Configure the encoder’s media source or playlist to repeat if you want playback to continue after the file ends.

This is different from replaying an uploaded video on its YouTube watch page: that replay does not become a live stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers sending a feed to Live Control Room, but does not prescribe a universal loop setting. The exact controls depend on your chosen software or hardware, so check its current instructions and test repeat behavior before relying on it.

Check eligibility, rights and duration first

Confirm that the channel can go live

YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s status and enable live streaming well before the event.

Clear rights for everything in the recording

You are responsible for having the necessary rights to rebroadcast the event, including its video, performances, music and other included material. YouTube’s livestream terms specifically require the rights needed to exploit live content, including music licensing rights. A recording being available to you—or having been streamed before—does not by itself establish permission for this live or archived use.

YouTube also requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Its monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible for monetization as inauthentic content; the policy update notice is dated July 15, 2025. That monetization rule does not establish that every repeat broadcast is prohibited.

Plan around YouTube’s long-stream limits

YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. If viewers need a replay, do not rely on YouTube to create an archive from a broadcast that runs beyond that duration; plan a separate recording or publish the event as an on-demand video where you have the rights.

Set up the local encoder workflow

  1. Enable live streaming and verify the channel. In YouTube Studio, check live-streaming eligibility and complete any required verification or activation. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast.
  3. Protect the stream key. Enter the key only in the encoder you intend to use. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before going live.
  4. Load the event recording. In the encoder, select the file as the media source or add it to a playlist. Set that source or playlist to repeat, and verify how the encoder handles the end of the file and transitions between playlist items. The loop control is encoder-specific; YouTube does not publish one universal setting.
  5. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Use the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended source and that the Live Control Room preview shows picture and sound.
  6. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain. For H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, YouTube’s published encoder settings list 5 Mbps as a minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. These are encoder bitrate figures, not a guarantee that an internet connection with the same upload speed is sufficient. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; use a stable connection with capacity above the encoder’s outgoing bitrate.
  7. Test the entire loop before the event. Check the preview, audio levels, picture, playlist transitions and repeat behavior. Confirm that the stream is accessible on the watch page and on a mobile device, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends continuous audio and video monitoring.
  8. Keep the local setup operating. During the broadcast, the host computer, encoder process, power and internet connection all need to remain available. Monitor the outgoing feed so you can respond to interruptions. When the event has stopped, YouTube recommends stopping the encoder.

Choose the right way to keep it running

The main operational choice is who keeps the playback and connection alive. A software encoder on a computer gives you direct control but ties the stream to that computer and its network. Dedicated hardware is another encoder route; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but that recommendation does not establish that a particular device supports continuous looping. A hosted playout service can move playback off your local computer, but check its loop and playlist behavior, recovery process, quality limits, storage, price and monitoring responsibilities before choosing one.

Whichever method you use, test the complete chain—including a file ending and restarting—rather than assuming that an encoder, device or hosted service will run indefinitely. YouTube’s published setup guidance does not guarantee indefinite uptime or specify a universal looping procedure.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The stream will not start: Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, the stream is configured in Live Control Room, and the encoder has the correct stream URL and key. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • Live Control Room shows no incoming video: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct media source is active, and the stream URL and key match the selected YouTube stream. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s stream-health display.
  • The video stops at the end instead of repeating: Verify the repeat or loop option on the encoder’s source or playlist. Test the transition before the broadcast; loop behavior is specific to the software or hardware.
  • The picture or audio stutters: Check stream health and whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. For H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; its guidance also recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Lowering the encoder bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain the current setting.
  • The stream drops when nobody is at the computer: A local encoder depends on the computer, process, power and internet connection remaining available. Restore the interrupted part of the chain and check the encoder’s and Live Control Room’s status before resuming.
  • The broadcast ends but no archive appears: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. For a very long event, keep a separate recording if you need a replay.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as compromised and replace or reset it in YouTube Studio, then update the encoder with the new key.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home computer and connection to carry the stream, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps playback running without a computer at home; automatic recovery can resume the stream if YouTube drops it.
