If audio goes silent between promotional videos in a YouTube Live loop, first find out whether the pause occurs where playback sources hand off in OBS or whether the stream itself is losing media segments. Check the source type, inspect the clip edges and test a local recording before changing YouTube’s ingest settings; those steps distinguish a local playback transition from a delivery failure.
First, locate where the silence starts
Identify how the promo videos are playing in OBS: as separate Media Sources, one VLC Video playlist, a Media Playlist Source plugin, or a single file already edited into a continuous sequence. The controls and likely causes differ by setup.
Make a short local recording that includes the transition where you hear the gap. If the recording has the same silence, investigate the files or OBS playback handoff. If local playback is clean but the broadcast has a gap, check encoder and delivery logs for failed media segments.
Check the playback setup
One VLC Video playlist
Open the VLC Video source’s properties and check the playlist controls. OBS documents the “Loop Playlist” setting, shuffle behavior, “Visibility Behaviour,” network caching, and “Audio Track” selection. Confirm looping is enabled, the intended audio track is selected, and visibility behavior is not stopping or restarting playback unexpectedly. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for the available controls.

Separate Media Sources
OBS’s “Loop” setting repeats an individual file after it finishes. It is distinct from looping a playlist, and OBS documentation does not promise gapless audio when switching between separate sources. Listen to the end of each clip and the beginning of the next for encoded silence, then record and listen to the handoff locally. Avoid changing the live ingestion protocol until you have checked the source files and transition.
Media Playlist Source plugin
If you use the OBS Media Playlist Source plugin, check the release notes for the installed version. Its update history records fixes for continuing to the next item after a transition and for looping a path that is the same as the previous item. The notes say versions from 0.1.0 onward require OBS 31; verify the installed plugin’s compatibility and release notes rather than assuming the problem is a YouTube setting. See the plugin update history.

Compare the four playback approaches
| Approach | Where transitions happen | Dependencies and controls | Testing and updating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate Media Sources | OBS hands off between sources. | Individual file looping is available; no documented guarantee of gapless handoffs between sources. | Test each source boundary in a local recording; clips can be replaced individually. |
| One VLC Video playlist | Playback advances within the playlist source. | Requires VLC; provides playlist looping, shuffle, visibility behavior, and audio-track controls. | Test the playlist as a whole and check the selected track and visibility behavior. |
| Media Playlist Source plugin | The plugin advances through the playlist. | Depends on the plugin and a compatible OBS version; check its installed-version notes. | Verify plugin version and reproduce the transition locally; update only after checking compatibility. |
| One pre-rendered continuous file | Transitions are part of the edited file, not handoffs between OBS sources. | Requires an editing/export workflow; silence in the edit or export remains. | Test the rendered file as one source; revise the edit and re-export if needed. |
None of these approaches is established as universally gapless. Choose based on how you want to update the promo loop and where you prefer transitions to be managed.
When a single continuous file may help
If source handoffs remain troublesome, assemble the sequence in an editor, export one continuous file, and test it as a single source. This removes transitions between separate OBS playback sources, but it cannot remove silence already present in the edits or export. OBS’s recording formats guide discusses container and codec compatibility; it notes fragmented MP4/MOV can suit common editing software, but does not endorse a particular editor or guarantee this workflow will fix every gap.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Keep local playback problems separate from YouTube ingest problems
YouTube’s ingest documentation describes delivery protocols and segment requirements; it does not address local clip handoffs in OBS. Treat failed segment uploads as a separate branch of troubleshooting: Google’s DASH encoder guide says a failed media-segment PUT request corresponds to a gap in the video stream and recommends retry logic. That is relevant when encoder or delivery logs show failed segments, not evidence that a local OBS source transition is at fault. See the YouTube DASH encoder guide.
For YouTube HLS ingestion, YouTube Help specifies segment durations of 1–4 seconds and recommends 44.1 kHz audio for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, with 128 Kbps stereo audio or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio. Google’s DASH guidance recommends media segments between 1 and 5 seconds for ingestion performance and latency tradeoffs. These are protocol-ingestion recommendations, not fixes for silence between OBS clips. Consult the YouTube HLS setup guide for HLS requirements; do not change these values as a substitute for diagnosing a local source transition.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- Silence is audible in the local recording at the same transition: Listen to the end and start of both files for encoded silence. Check whether separate sources are handing off, or whether the playlist’s selected audio track is correct.
- A VLC playlist stops, restarts, or behaves differently when a scene is hidden: Check “Loop Playlist” and “Visibility Behaviour” in the source properties, then retest the playlist locally.
- The plugin does not advance or repeats unexpectedly: Check the installed plugin version’s release notes for transition-continuation or repeated-path fixes, and confirm OBS compatibility.
- Local recording is clean, but the live stream has a gap: Inspect encoder and delivery logs for failed segment uploads. If using DASH and a media-segment PUT fails, follow the guide’s retry guidance rather than changing clip-boundary settings.
- A continuous export still has silence: Inspect the edit and exported file at the transition; putting clips into one file does not remove silence already in the material.
