To lower CPU use on a 24/7 kids’ cartoon stream, first check whether OBS is encoding with x264 or a supported hardware encoder. Then reduce output resolution or frame rate only as much as needed, simplify scenes and sources, and test stream health before relying on the setup continuously. Make one change at a time and compare the result on your own system: there is no established CPU-saving percentage for cartoon streams.
1. Find out what is using the CPU
In OBS, check the selected video encoder and watch system usage while the stream is running. With x264, OBS encodes video in software using the CPU. A hardware encoder—if your computer supports one—moves much of that work to a specialized component. Changing encoders does not eliminate the CPU or GPU work involved in composing scenes, rendering sources, playing media, or handling other applications.
Record a baseline before changing settings: note the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and whether OBS reports encoding or rendering problems. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped. No reviewed source establishes a universal CPU threshold or a predictable percentage reduction for this kind of stream.
2. Try a supported hardware encoder
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it can take encoding work off the CPU. Available options depend on your hardware and operating system; OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV and Apple VideoToolbox. See the OBS hardware-encoding guidance and check compatibility for your exact device before changing equipment.

- NVIDIA NVENC: OBS documents support on Windows and Linux with GeForce 750 Ti, 900-series (Maxwell) or newer cards. It recommends Turing-generation NVENC for best results and cautions that earlier generations can produce lower quality at the same bitrate.
- Intel QSV: It requires supported Intel graphics; the presence of an Intel processor alone does not establish that QSV is available.
- Apple VideoToolbox: OBS supports streaming with VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon. Its documentation says streaming through VideoToolbox is not supported on Intel Macs because of constant-bitrate limitations.
Compare the picture at your chosen bitrate after switching. OBS notes that older hardware-encoder generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s veryfast preset. A GPU purchase is not a universal fix: consider one only after confirming that your existing hardware lacks a suitable encoder and checking the exact model’s compatibility.
3. Reduce resolution or frame rate if OBS is overloaded
Fewer pixels and fewer frames mean less work. Try lowering the output resolution or frame rate gradually, keeping the best quality your system can sustain. If 60 fps is causing trouble and the cartoon does not need it, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps. After each change, check motion smoothness and image detail rather than assuming a lower setting is automatically acceptable.

Reducing the base canvas is a more disruptive step because sources may need repositioning. OBS reserves that adjustment for systems starved for GPU resources; try output changes and scene simplification first unless your evidence points to rendering pressure. See OBS encoding and performance troubleshooting.

YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds), and RTMPS. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of lower CPU use. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and monitor the stream-health messages while testing.

- Remove unused sources and disable filters or effects that are not needed.
- Use media at a sensible resolution. Avoid feeding a very high-resolution video into a much smaller output when a lower-resolution asset will serve.
- Reduce the size or number of Browser Sources. For static graphics, use an image source where practical instead of a browser overlay.
- Apply effects to the smallest appropriate source, rather than processing a larger scene unnecessarily.
- Remember that hidden sources may still use resources; remove or disable them if they are not part of the stream.

YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. For cartoons, test representative scenes, motion and audio—not only a static title card. Check OBS and YouTube’s stream-health messages, and verify that the playlist loops cleanly, audio behaves at transitions, and the stream reconnects as expected.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 24/7 setup, let the test run long enough to expose issues that a brief preview may miss, then check system stability and transitions. The official guidance does not prescribe a test duration or promise a particular uptime; choose a representative test period for your operation. See YouTube’s encoder setup and testing guidance.
6. Troubleshoot common CPU and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| CPU remains heavily loaded during the stream | x264 may be doing the encoding, or other applications and sources may be contributing. | Confirm the selected encoder, test a supported hardware encoder if available, and simplify sources. Compare against your recorded baseline. |
| OBS reports encoding overload or the broadcast stutters | The encoder may not be keeping up with the selected output. | Try a lower frame rate or output resolution; if using x264, test hardware encoding where supported. Change one setting at a time. |
| Encoding is improved, but rendering problems continue | Scene composition, filters, browser overlays or source resolution can still burden the system. | Remove or simplify sources, reduce expensive effects, and check whether hidden sources can be removed or disabled. |
| YouTube reports stream-health or ingest issues | Output settings may not match the selected codec, frame rate or platform guidance, or the connection may be unstable. | Check the matching YouTube bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval and RTMPS recommendations; test and monitor stream health. |
| The stream drops or does not resume cleanly | The local setup or its reconnect behavior may not be reliable enough for continuous use. | Test reconnect behavior before depending on the stream, and confirm that playback resumes at the intended point. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the cartoons are prerecorded and your goal is continuous YouTube playback, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS and a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
