Check the preview and audio before going live. You need permission to broadcast both the music and the artwork.
What you need
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: it must be verified and have had no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An image file for the on-screen artwork and an audio file for the broadcast.
- An encoder such as OBS Studio, installed on a computer that can stay connected and running for the stream’s duration.
- Rights to broadcast both the audio and the image.
A static-image radio stream is still a video livestream: the encoder sends a video frame containing the artwork along with the audio. No camera is needed for this format.
Build the image-and-audio scene in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the radio stream.
- Add the artwork. In the Sources panel, choose + > Image, select the image file, and position or scale it to fill the canvas. OBS also supports image slideshows if you want visuals to change rather than remain static. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Add the audio. Choose + > Media Source, select the audio file, and enable Loop if you want playback to repeat when the file ends. OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV support for Media Sources. Check the audio meter while the file plays to confirm that OBS is receiving sound. See OBS Media Sources.
- Check the composition and sound. Confirm that the artwork fills the intended frame, the audio is audible, and looping works as expected. Avoid accidentally adding a second copy of the audio source, which could make it sound doubled.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a livestream to start immediately or schedule one for later. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream connection details. In the Live Control Room’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, share it publicly, or include it in a recording.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Reveal the RTMPS URL in the Live Control Room’s stream settings, then enter that URL and the key in OBS’s stream settings. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. If OBS offers a YouTube service preset, select it and enter the key. Otherwise, select a custom server and enter the URL and key from YouTube. The labels can vary by OBS version; use the server and key fields in its streaming settings.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS and wait for the incoming stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in the Live Control Room only after checking the preview.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Stop streaming in OBS, then end the stream in Live Control Room if YouTube has not already marked it ended. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a longer stream.
Choose encoder settings that match YouTube’s guidance
Use YouTube’s current settings table for the resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec you select. Its recommended video bitrate depends on those choices, so there is no single correct bitrate for every static-image stream. Leave upload bandwidth headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full capacity of your connection. The table and guidance are in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page.
- Protocol: RTMPS is recommended by YouTube; use the matching URL from Live Control Room.
- Video codec: YouTube’s published guidance includes H.264, H.265, and AV1. Confirm that the chosen codec is supported by both your encoder and the selected YouTube ingest workflow.
- Rate control: YouTube specifies CBR (constant bitrate) in its encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. A still image does not need a high frame rate for visual motion, but choose a supported setting and consult the matching bitrate row.
- Audio: YouTube supports AAC or MP3. Its stereo recommendation is 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate.
Test the full path before an important broadcast: play the media in OBS, start a short test stream, check the YouTube preview, and monitor stream health and audio/video quality. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time and checking the preview before the event.

Clear music and artwork rights before broadcasting
You need permission for both the sound and the image. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material playing in another broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and may interrupt or terminate the stream if the content continues. A music license alone may not prevent this: even a creator who has licensed material may need the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Confirm that your license or permission covers livestreaming on YouTube, not just personal listening or on-demand uploads.
- Check whether the permission covers the specific channel and whether the rights owner must allowlist it in Content ID.
- Confirm the artwork’s license separately; permission for music does not grant rights to cover art, photos, or other visuals.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | The encoder is not running, or its server URL or key does not match the Live Control Room details. | Confirm the correct RTMPS URL and key in OBS, then start the encoder and allow time for the preview to appear. |
| Stream arrives but the preview is blank or cropped | The image source is absent, hidden, or does not fill the canvas. | Check that the image source is visible in the scene and resize or reposition it to cover the intended frame. |
| There is no audio | The media source is not playing, is muted, or is not routed into the scene’s output. | Check the Media Source’s file selection, OBS audio meter, and mute state. Play the file again and verify the meter moves. |
| Audio stops at the end of the file | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the source’s properties and enable Loop; test through the end of the file before broadcasting. |
| Stream health is unstable | The selected bitrate may be too high for the available upload connection, or the connection may fluctuate. | Use the bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s current table, reduce the output setting if needed, and leave upload headroom. |
| YouTube shows a placeholder or interrupts the stream | YouTube may have detected third-party content. | Review the copyright notice, confirm rights for the matched audio or image, and contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting when appropriate. |
