To put radio automation on YouTube Live, send the automation system’s audio output to a streaming encoder, then connect that encoder to a stream created in YouTube Studio. The automation system handles scheduled playout; the encoder delivers audio (and optional video) to YouTube. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview, and—if the stream is scheduled—select Go live in Live Control Room.
How the radio-to-YouTube setup works
- Radio automation system: plays scheduled tracks, jingles, voiceovers, and other station audio. RadioDJ, for example, documents Auto DJ, event scheduling, and multiple sound-device outputs. RadioDJ feature information
- Encoder: takes the automation audio (plus any optional video) and sends it to YouTube using a stream URL and key. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; OBS is one software example. YouTube encoder guidance OBS streaming guide
- YouTube Live Control Room: creates or schedules the broadcast, supplies connection details, shows the incoming preview, and provides controls to start or end the live stream. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Some automation applications can send audio directly to a compatible encoder; others require you to route audio through a sound-device output or mixer. RadioDJ documents multiple sound-device outputs and says newer versions use an external encoder for streaming. The exact controls depend on your automation software, operating system, and audio hardware.
Set up the stream step by step
- Choose the audio signal path. Check whether your automation software supports direct output to a streaming encoder. If not, identify the sound-device output or mixer bus carrying the station’s playout. Use that as the encoder’s audio source.
- Create or schedule a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s instructions say to enter these values in the encoder’s server and stream-key fields. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Connect the audio and choose visuals. In the encoder, select the automation system’s output as the audio input. You can add a station graphic, camera, or other suitable visual source if you want video; a microphone is not needed just to transmit audio that has already been produced. YouTube Help: Live streaming equipment
- Configure the encoder for YouTube. Choose YouTube as the streaming service if the encoder offers it. Otherwise, enter the server URL and stream key from the current Live Control Room settings. Prefer the RTMPS URL when the encoder supports it; RTMPS is RTMP sent over a TLS/SSL connection. YouTube Help: Live streaming with an encoder
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended audio and any video. Check for audible, unclipped sound and the correct visual. If the stream is scheduled, wait for the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room; an encoder connection by itself does not launch the scheduled broadcast.
Choose an encoder and routing method
Before settling on a workflow, check these practical differences:
- Native output or separate encoder: determine whether your automation system can send to a compatible RTMP/RTMPS encoder directly, or whether you need a separate encoder application or device.
- Audio routing reliability: verify that the playout output can be selected by the encoder and remains available during unattended operation. RadioDJ’s documented sound-device outputs illustrate this routing approach, but controls vary by product and operating system. RadioDJ feature information
- RTMPS support: if available, use the RTMPS server address YouTube provides rather than assuming an encoder’s default connection is the right one.
- Visual needs: decide whether a static station graphic is sufficient or whether your broadcast needs a camera or a fuller visual production.
- Scheduling and recovery: consider how the system behaves if the computer, audio device, or internet connection is interrupted, and whether you need unattended operation. Confirm the capabilities of the specific software and equipment rather than assuming they recover automatically.
OBS is one software encoder/production option; its current inputs and service configuration should be checked against your setup. OBS streaming guide No particular encoder model or performance level is established here.

Check YouTube readiness, copyright, and archiving
- Use the stream URL and key currently displayed for the stream in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or show it in screenshots.
- Make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every song, recording, jingle, and other material in the automation schedule. A track being available to play on a radio station does not, by itself, establish permission to stream it on YouTube.
- For scheduled broadcasts, include the manual Go live action in your launch checklist once the preview appears.

Troubleshoot common problems
No audio in YouTube’s preview
Confirm that the automation system is playing through the output or bus selected by the encoder. Then check the encoder’s input selection, mute state, and input level. If you route through a mixer or virtual audio device, verify that the selected source is the one carrying playout.
The encoder cannot connect
Compare its server URL and stream key with the current values in Live Control Room. If you selected RTMPS, check that the URL begins with the RTMPS protocol and that the encoder supports it.

The preview appears, but the scheduled broadcast is not live
Once the preview is receiving the signal, select Go live in Live Control Room. Connecting the encoder does not substitute for this scheduled-stream launch step.
The stream stops after a computer or connection interruption
Check whether the encoder is still running and whether the automation output and internet connection have returned. If they have, verify the stream’s current connection details and restart the encoder as needed. How recovery works depends on your particular system; do not assume the encoder or automation software will resume automatically.
