To have YouTube start your gaming broadcast when your encoder reconnects, enable Auto-start in the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio and turn on reconnect or retry in your encoder, if it offers that option. These solve different problems: Auto-start starts the YouTube broadcast when a feed arrives; the encoder’s retry setting tries to restore the feed after an interruption. Neither setting by itself relaunches an encoder application that has crashed.
Know what stopped: the feed or the encoder
A YouTube stream can stop because the encoder temporarily loses its connection, or because the encoder application or device stops running. YouTube’s Auto-start setting addresses neither failure directly: it lets YouTube begin broadcasting when the encoder sends a feed. For a temporary interruption, the encoder must still be running and reconnect. If the encoder process exits, a separate restart mechanism or backup encoder is needed.
| Problem | What may restore the stream | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder is running, but its feed is interrupted | Encoder-specific reconnect/retry, followed by YouTube Auto-start if enabled | Confirm retry is available, then test the encoder’s behavior. YouTube does not specify one universal reconnect control for third-party encoders. |
| Encoder application or device has stopped | Restart the application or device, or use a separately configured backup encoder | An in-process retry setting may not work after the process exits. The sources do not establish that every failure preserves the same live event or watch page. |
Enable YouTube Auto-start and prepare the encoder
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Studio, then Go Live, and choose an existing stream or create one.
- Turn on Auto-start in the stream settings. YouTube says that with Auto-start and Auto-stop enabled, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder. Auto-start means the broadcast starts when YouTube receives the encoder’s feed; it does not restart the encoder program. If you reuse stream settings, YouTube says those choices are copied too.
- Check the server URL and stream key in the encoder. Enter the current YouTube stream URL and the correct stream key in the encoder. If the encoder reports a startup error, check the key and refresh it if needed, then update the encoder. If your software signs in directly instead of using a stream key, YouTube directs you to the software provider for help. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enable reconnect or retry in the encoder, if available. Find the control in that encoder’s own settings or documentation. The label and behavior vary by encoder; YouTube’s guidance does not define a setting shared by all third-party encoders.
- Test before using it for a public gaming session. Run a private or unlisted test stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health and messages. Test a brief interruption as well, and confirm whether the encoder resumes sending and the broadcast starts as expected.
Make reconnects less likely and test recovery
- Match stream quality to the connection. YouTube recommends choosing quality suited to your internet connection and testing upload speed. Its encoder settings and stream-health guidance can help you review quality settings; a setting your connection cannot sustain can contribute to an unstable feed.
- Test representative gameplay. Include the kind of movement and audio your actual gaming stream will contain, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages.
- Use a backup encoder when continuity justifies it. YouTube’s live-stream tips describe testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. This tests a redundant setup; it does not make a single encoder restart automatically. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Treat wired networking and backup power as diagnosis-specific measures. YouTube’s failover test mentions unplugging Ethernet, but does not specifically recommend buying a cable as a fix. A UPS is relevant only if power loss is the cause; it can maintain power to equipment but does not relaunch streaming software.
Troubleshooting: stream does not resume
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not start when the encoder sends video | Auto-start may be off, or the encoder may not be sending a valid feed. | Check Auto-start in that stream’s settings, then verify that the encoder is running and using the correct YouTube server URL and stream key. |
| Encoder reports an authentication or startup error | The stream key may be incorrect, outdated, or entered in the wrong stream. | Check or refresh the key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. If the software uses direct sign-in instead of a key, contact its provider. |
| Encoder remains open but does not reconnect | Reconnect/retry may be unavailable, disabled, or behaving differently than expected for that encoder. | Consult the encoder’s current documentation, enable its retry option if available, and test again. YouTube does not establish a universal third-party reconnect setting or recovery time. |
| Encoder application has closed | A retry control within the closed application cannot send a new feed. | Restart the application or device, or configure a separate operating-system-level restart mechanism or backup encoder. Test the full recovery path in advance. |
| Feed drops repeatedly during gameplay | Connection capacity or stream quality may be mismatched, or another network or power problem may be present. | Test upload speed, choose a quality the connection can sustain, and watch stream-health messages. Investigate power only if the interruption points to power loss. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded gaming video that keeps a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it looping without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans, and start your free day.
