To rotate multiple gaming VODs on YouTube Live, use an encoder or playback tool to play the files in sequence and send one continuous feed to YouTube. YouTube receives that feed; it does not document a built-in control that turns a YouTube playlist into a live rotation. The playlist order, looping, and transitions are set in the playback tool you choose.
How the rotation works
Your VODs remain prerecorded video files. An encoder or playback tool plays them one after another, then sends the resulting continuous video and audio feed to a YouTube Live event using its server URL and stream key. YouTube documents encoder streaming and scheduling, but does not document a native multi-VOD rotation feature. The exact playlist and looping controls therefore depend on your chosen tool. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide explains how to connect an encoder to Live Control Room.
Simply creating a playlist on YouTube does not, by itself, make its videos play as a live broadcast. Configure playback and any repeat behavior in the encoder or playback setup.
Prepare the channel and VODs
Check live-stream eligibility
Before configuring the rotation, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel and that your account meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. YouTube lists channel verification, age eligibility, and restrictions among the considerations for getting started with live streaming. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance if Live Control Room does not let you create a stream.

Arrange and check the files
- Choose the VODs and put them in the intended order in your playback tool.
- Check that each file has the intended image and audio, and that the transition from one file to the next is acceptable.
- Set looping or repeat behavior in the tool if you want the sequence to start again after the final VOD. Those controls are tool-specific; YouTube’s encoder documentation does not prescribe a playlist setup.
- Use only material you have the rights to broadcast. A file being available as a VOD does not automatically grant permission to rebroadcast it in a live stream.
Set up and start the YouTube Live stream
- Choose a playback and encoder setup. Use a tool that can play your prerecorded files in sequence and deliver the output continuously. Configure the order, transitions, and any loop in that tool; consult its own instructions for the exact controls.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream, or schedule one if you want an upcoming watch page and reminders. Follow the on-screen encoder-streaming flow in YouTube’s setup guide.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your event.
- Start playback and check the preview. Start the encoder feed, then verify the preview in Live Control Room before making the event public. Check the picture, audio, file order, and transitions. A private or unlisted test is useful when you want to rehearse without presenting the stream publicly.
- Start the event and monitor it. Once the preview is correct, start the live event as prompted. Keep an eye on stream health and the audio and video while it is live; YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the encoder feed when the rotation is finished. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived in full.
Bandwidth and stream settings
Your internet connection needs enough upload capacity for the encoder’s total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth at least 20% above that total. For example, a stream configured for a total bitrate of 10 Mbps calls for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under that guidance. Other devices or uploads sharing the connection can reduce what is actually available, so check stream health during a rehearsal and broadcast.
Choose resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and other encoder settings according to your output and YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen protocol. YouTube’s encoder settings guide covers supported settings and the importance of testing and monitoring. The rotation itself does not change those settings: the encoder sends one continuous feed, whether it is playing the first VOD or the fifth.

Rehearse before leaving the rotation unattended
Run through enough of the sequence to confirm that the last file leads into the next one as expected, especially if the playlist should loop. Verify that audio does not disappear or jump unexpectedly between files and that the video remains visible in the YouTube preview. A successful start does not prove the whole playlist will run correctly; monitor the stream for playback interruptions and connection problems.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Connection details or encoder state | Confirm the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the intended YouTube event. Keep the key private. |
| The stream starts, but the wrong VOD plays or the sequence stops | Playlist configuration in the playback tool | Check the file order and the tool’s repeat or end-of-list behavior. YouTube does not control this rotation. |
| Audio or video is missing in the preview | File playback or encoder output | Check the source file and the encoder’s output, then rehearse again and confirm both are present in Live Control Room before going public. |
| Stream health degrades or playback becomes unstable | Available upload bandwidth and stream health | Compare available upload capacity with the total bitrate, retaining YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network use and monitor the preview and stream health. |
| The stream is not available for the channel | Channel eligibility or restrictions | Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and resolve any account requirements or restrictions shown in Studio. |
When standalone hardware makes sense
YouTube’s encoder guide names the AJA HELO Plus and says its optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule and stream prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialist option for creators who specifically need standalone scheduled playback; it is not necessary for a basic rotation if an existing computer and encoder can do the job. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish current price or availability.
