To stream an Icecast station on YouTube Live, use an encoder or relay to read the station’s listener-facing Icecast mountpoint and send a compatible audio feed to YouTube’s ingest URL using a YouTube stream key. Icecast serves the radio stream; it does not, by itself, send that stream to YouTube.
How the Icecast-to-YouTube relay works
The path has three parts: the station publishes audio to Icecast, a relay reads the public listener stream, and an encoder sends output to YouTube. The relay may run on your computer or on a server you administer. Icecast’s documentation describes the mountpoint as the unique path listeners open on the server; the source client that publishes to Icecast and the listener-facing relay are separate roles (Icecast basic setup).
- Icecast input: the station’s listener URL, including its hostname, port, and active mountpoint path.
- Relay or encoder: reads and, if needed, decodes or converts that incoming format.
- YouTube output: YouTube’s ingest server URL and a separate stream key, configured in the encoder.
Before you start
Get the correct Icecast listener URL and format
Ask the station operator for the active listener URL and the stream’s audio format. A mountpoint is a path on the Icecast server, not the server’s source password or the YouTube stream key. Use the station’s actual hostname, port, and mountpoint; examples in documentation are illustrative and should not be copied as live credentials. If the station has multiple mountpoints, confirm which one carries the program you want. Icecast’s FAQ discusses mountpoints and supported stream formats (Icecast FAQ).
Check YouTube channel eligibility
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and that users must be at least 16 years old. Confirm the status for your channel in YouTube Studio, since account status and platform requirements can change (YouTube live streaming eligibility).

Choose where the relay will run
A graphical encoder can be easier to configure and preview, while a command-line relay can be automated and run on a server. In either case, check that it can read the Icecast codec, produce YouTube-compatible audio, and maintain a stable outbound connection. A self-hosted relay also means you are responsible for server operation and monitoring; a hosted Icecast arrangement depends on the provider’s codec support, relay permissions, availability, and terms. These are operational trade-offs, not performance guarantees.
Set up the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- Create or select an encoder stream and copy the server URL and stream key shown for it. They are separate destination details: the URL identifies YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and the key identifies your stream.
- If your encoder supports RTMPS, choose the RTMPS server URL. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP secured with TLS and provides the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room (Use RTMPS to stream).
- Enter the YouTube URL and key in the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Do not put Icecast credentials in those fields.
Configure and start the relay
- Set the input. Enter the complete listener URL for the active Icecast mountpoint. If access requires credentials, use only the listener credentials the station operator gave you, and store them securely.
- Check codec compatibility. Identify the Icecast audio format and confirm the encoder can decode it. YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS settings allow AAC or MP3 audio and recommend stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Use constant bitrate encoding where the encoder exposes that setting (YouTube encoder settings).
- Choose whether to copy or convert audio. If the incoming codec and stream properties are accepted by both the relay and YouTube output, copying may avoid an unnecessary encode. Otherwise, configure the relay to decode and encode to a supported output. The correct choice depends on the actual mountpoint format and encoder capabilities.
- Decide what viewers will see. An audio radio feed may need a visual component in the encoder’s YouTube output. Configure an appropriate visual according to your encoder and intended broadcast; do not assume that an audio-only Icecast listener URL supplies video.
- Start the relay and inspect the preview. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube’s preview and check that the sound is present and stable and that the intended visual appears. Start the broadcast using YouTube’s Live Control Room workflow only after the preview is correct. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends checking the preview before going live (YouTube encoder streaming guidance).
FFmpeg and other encoder choices
FFmpeg documents Icecast-related input and output protocol options, including mountpoint, password, and content-type options for Icecast and separate RTMP output support (FFmpeg protocol documentation). That establishes protocol capabilities, not a tested, universal Icecast-to-YouTube command. A reliable command depends on the incoming codec, authentication, whether audio can be copied or must be transcoded, how you provide any visual output, your FFmpeg build, and the current YouTube ingest settings. Confirm those details before adapting a command, and test the resulting feed in YouTube’s preview rather than assuming a command will work for every station.

Security, copyright, and broadcast operation
Protect both sets of credentials
The YouTube stream key lets an encoder send a feed to your channel, so treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Keep it distinct from any Icecast listener or source credentials. Do not publish a relay configuration or command containing live keys or passwords.
Confirm permission to rebroadcast the station
Having access to an Icecast listener URL does not establish that you have rights to retransmit its programming. Confirm permission for the music, spoken content, and other material in the feed, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for your channel. A relay does not change the underlying rights or guarantee that YouTube will allow a broadcast or monetization.

Plan for unattended operation
For a long-running broadcast, monitor both the relay process and the YouTube Live Control Room. A working Icecast input does not prove that the YouTube output is still connected. Consider what should happen if the source, network, encoder, or YouTube connection drops, and verify reconnection behavior with your chosen tool before relying on it unattended.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely checks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The relay cannot open the Icecast stream | Mountpoint spelling and path, hostname and port, reachability from the relay host, and any listener authentication. | Confirm the active listener URL and access details with the station operator. Test the URL from the same machine or server that runs the relay. |
| The input connects but there is no sound | Whether the mountpoint is active, whether the relay decodes its codec, and whether the encoder is outputting audio. | Verify the station’s format and select a compatible decoder or transcode to AAC or MP3 for YouTube output. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Destination protocol and server URL, stream key, and whether the chosen encoder supports the selected RTMP or RTMPS destination. | Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, correct the destination fields, and use RTMPS if supported. |
| The preview is missing or unstable | Whether the relay is still running, the outbound network is stable, and audio and any required visual are being sent. | Check the relay and Live Control Room together; resolve the source, output, or connection fault, then confirm a stable preview before starting the broadcast. |
| YouTube will not let the channel go live | Channel verification, recent live-streaming restrictions, and the account’s live-stream eligibility. | Review the channel’s status and YouTube’s current eligibility information in Studio. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Whether the key appeared in a public post, shared configuration, or log. | Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings rather than relay a live Icecast mountpoint, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not take a live camera feed or serve as an Icecast listener relay. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
