1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can run a YouTube stream without OBS, but the right setup depends on what “gaming video” means. For live gameplay, another compatible encoder must capture and send the game continuously. For prerecorded gaming footage, a cloud service can loop uploaded video without leaving a computer running at home. In either case, YouTube does not run the game or supply the video source for you.
Choose the right 24/7 workflow
Live gameplay
If viewers should see a game being played live, a device or service must run or receive the game, capture its video and audio, encode the feed, and send it to YouTube. OBS is one encoder option, not a YouTube requirement. You can choose another software encoder or a compatible hardware encoder from YouTube’s encoder directory. Confirm the encoder supports your actual input source and YouTube streaming before relying on it. The directory includes software and hardware options, but YouTube does not certify them as its own products.
A capture card alone does not replace an encoder: it can provide a video input, but something still has to encode and transmit the stream. Nor does choosing hardware avoid the need for a continuously running gameplay source, power, and network connection.
Prerecorded gaming video
If you want a continuous channel built from recorded gameplay, a cloud service can send uploaded footage to YouTube without your home computer encoding the feed. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; that listing is not evidence that it captures live gameplay. Check any service’s current support for inputs, playlists, looping, recovery, rights, and pricing before choosing it.

For prerecorded video, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera or game capture.
Check YouTube eligibility and protect your channel
- Verify eligibility: YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Creators must be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and formats for current requirements.
- Review rights before scheduling: Use gameplay, music, overlays, and other material only when you have the rights or permission needed for YouTube. A video being recorded by you does not automatically grant rights to music, cutscenes, or other third-party material in it. Check YouTube’s copyright guidance and channel monetization policies; copyright compliance and monetization eligibility are distinct questions.
- Plan the stream as an ongoing broadcast: Choose a title and description that accurately describe whether the feed is live gameplay or a loop of recorded footage. Do not represent prerecorded footage as live play.
Set up a non-OBS encoder for live gameplay
- Choose an encoder and confirm its input path. Use the YouTube encoder directory to find options, then consult the encoder maker’s documentation for current setup steps. Confirm it can capture the game directly or accept the output from your capture hardware. If the game runs on a separate device, check that the encoder can receive that device’s video and audio.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live to open Live Control Room, and create or schedule the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast into the matching fields in your encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: someone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Don’t post it in a public chat, screenshot, or untrusted service. If it is exposed, change or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set protocol, codec, and output. Choose RTMPS if both YouTube and the encoder support it. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Encoder options vary, so use a format supported on both ends.
- Match frame rate and bitrate to your target. YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Its H.264 recommendations are shown below; they are ingestion guidance, not a guarantee of picture quality or compatibility with every encoder.
- Keep the source running. For a 24/7 live-game feed, the game source, encoder, power, and network must remain available. Arrange practical safeguards such as stable cooling, adequate storage if recording locally, and backup power or internet where appropriate. These are operational precautions, not YouTube requirements.
Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings
| Setting | YouTube guidance | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS | Prefer RTMPS when available at both ends. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 | Select a codec supported by the encoder and the YouTube ingest workflow. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Use a supported audio codec; confirm game and microphone audio are routed as intended. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set constant bitrate rather than a variable-rate mode. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set a 2-second interval if the encoder exposes this control. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Choose a frame rate your game source and encoder can sustain. |
| 1080p60, H.264 | 17 Mbps | Use as YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for this resolution and frame rate. |
| 1080p30, H.264 | 14 Mbps | Use as YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for this resolution and frame rate. |
| 720p60, H.264 | 8 Mbps | Use as YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for this resolution and frame rate. |
| 720p30, H.264 | 8 Mbps | Use as YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for this resolution and frame rate. |
These recommendations come from YouTube’s live encoder settings page. The page’s H.264 figures do not establish equivalent bitrate targets for every other codec. If you change resolution, frame rate, or codec, check the current YouTube guidance and the encoder’s supported settings.

Test the stream and plan for connection failures
- Test a representative scene. Before committing to a full-day run, stream gameplay with the movement, effects, and audio you expect viewers to see. YouTube recommends testing under realistic conditions.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the correct video, game audio, microphone audio, resolution, and frame rate appear before sharing the stream.
- Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during setup and operation. Fix warnings before treating the stream as ready for an extended run.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube advises roughly 20% more upload capacity than the total stream bitrate. Its Streaming tips state: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Account for other devices and uploads sharing the connection, not just the encoder’s nominal bitrate.
- Decide what happens after an interruption. For a local setup, plan how you will notice and restart the game source or encoder after power, network, or software failure. YouTube’s documentation does not promise uninterrupted operation or automatic recovery for a creator’s encoder.
Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
A 24-hour broadcast and a complete 24-hour recording are not the same thing. YouTube’s cited encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one 24-hour stream will produce one complete automatic archive. If you need a full-day VOD, arrange a separate recording or archive plan and verify the current YouTube behavior before the event.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Wrong stream URL or key, encoder not started, or input not connected. | Confirm the broadcast is active in Live Control Room, recheck the URL and key, and verify the encoder is receiving the game or capture-card input. |
| Stream key was exposed | Key shared publicly or entered into an untrusted place. | Reset or replace the key in YouTube Studio, then update the encoder with the new key. |
| Video stutters or stream health degrades | Upload bandwidth is insufficient or unstable, or other traffic is using the connection. | Compare total stream bitrate with available upload capacity, preserve the recommended headroom, reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, and test again. |
| Audio is missing or wrong | Encoder is capturing the wrong audio device or using an unsupported configuration. | Check game, microphone, and desktop-audio routing in the encoder; confirm AAC or MP3 output and verify the result in the preview. |
| The game feed stops when unattended | The game source, encoder, computer, power, or network stopped. | Identify which component failed and arrange monitoring and recovery for that component. A local encoder cannot keep sending if its source or machine is off. |
| The full-day VOD is incomplete or unavailable | The stream exceeded the cited automatic-archive window. | For 24-hour broadcasts, use a separate recording or archive plan rather than assuming one complete automatic archive. |
