To put a countdown in the live video itself, create a “Starting soon” scene in OBS Studio, add a timer as a text source, browser source, or countdown video, and switch to your meditation scene when the timer ends. A scheduled YouTube Live event can give viewers an upcoming watch page and, for eligible creators, a trailer—but those features are separate from a countdown graphic in the outgoing video.

Build the countdown in OBS

OBS scenes combine sources such as text, browser pages, images, and media files. Make one scene for the pre-show and another for the meditation; then put the timer in the first scene and the camera or other meditation visuals in the second. OBS explains scenes and source types in its Sources Guide.

  1. Create two scenes. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene named “Starting soon” and another named “Meditation.” Add the visuals and audio you intend to use to the appropriate scene.
  2. Add a countdown method to “Starting soon.” Choose one of the options below. Arrange and size it in the preview so the timer is easy to read and does not cover important text or imagery.
  3. Start the YouTube broadcast with “Starting soon” selected. Check the program output—not just the editing preview—to make sure the countdown is visible and the audio is what you intend.
  4. At zero, switch to “Meditation.” If your chosen timer does not change scenes by itself, make the switch part of your host checklist. Avoid leaving the timer frozen at zero, restarting unexpectedly, or showing an unintended blank screen.
  5. Rehearse privately or unlisted before the public session. Verify when the timer starts, how it behaves after a scene change, whether the text fits, and whether audio starts and stops as planned. This is practical preparation, not a YouTube requirement.

Option 1: Use a text source

Add a text source and have a timer mechanism update the displayed text. OBS text sources can read their contents from a file; a timer script or another process can update that file. The exact text-source options vary by operating system, so check the controls shown in your installation. See the OBS Text Sources guide.

A text source alone does not count down: something must change its displayed value over time. If you use a script, OBS supports Lua and Python scripts managed through Tools > Scripts. Script behavior and error handling need care; do not assume an unreviewed community script is an official OBS feature. The OBS Scripting Guide describes the supported scripting interface.

  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

Option 2: Use a Browser Source

Add a Browser Source to the “Starting soon” scene and enter the URL of a countdown page. A Browser Source embeds a web page in the scene, with configurable URL and viewport dimensions. The OBS documentation lists a default viewport of 800 × 600 and a default custom frame rate of 30 FPS; these are defaults, not recommendations for a full-screen overlay. Set the dimensions to suit your composition and preview the result. See OBS Browser Source.

This approach depends on the chosen page and its network or service behavior. Confirm that it loads, stays visible, counts down as expected, and does not show unrelated page elements before relying on it live.

Option 3: Play a countdown video

Add a Media Source containing a pre-rendered countdown file. This is useful when you want a fixed design and duration that you can inspect in advance. Confirm playback, duration, audio behavior, and the scene-switch timing in rehearsal; the transition may need to be manual. Make sure you have permission to use any included music or other audio. OBS lists media sources among its scene source types in the Sources Guide.

Choose the right pre-show approach

Approach Best for Trade-off to check
Text source plus timer A simple, editable countdown display The text source needs a timer mechanism, such as a script or file update; available text controls vary by operating system.
Browser Source A styled countdown page embedded in OBS It relies on the page loading and behaving correctly; test its display and timing in advance.
Countdown video A fixed visual prepared and checked before the session It has a fixed duration; playback and the scene change may need manual attention.
Scheduled YouTube stream and trailer Helping viewers find the event and wait on its watch page It does not put a custom countdown graphic into the live program.
YouTube Premiere A scheduled prerecorded video where the Premiere experience is appropriate It is a different format from a guided meditation broadcast live.

Keep YouTube’s watch page separate from the video countdown

Scheduling a YouTube Live stream can make it appear as an upcoming event, where viewers may select “Notify me.” YouTube also allows eligible creators to add a trailer to a scheduled stream. Its published requirements for that trailer are a length of 15 seconds to 3 minutes and eligibility of more than 1,000 subscribers with no Community Guideline strikes. These features affect the event’s watch page before the broadcast; they do not create an OBS-style timer in the outgoing video. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.

YouTube’s documented native two-minute countdown theme is for Premieres. Creators can choose a theme and length when scheduling a video as a Premiere, but that does not make it a customizable countdown overlay for an ordinary YouTube Live meditation. See Customise your Premiere.

Make the countdown work for a meditation

Treat the pre-roll as a quiet arrival period rather than an advertisement. Keep the remaining time legible, use a restrained screen, and consider a short instruction such as “Find a comfortable seat and settle in.” Decide before going live whether the pre-roll will be silent or include ambient audio. Use only audio and visuals you have rights to use, and check that a countdown file or browser page does not introduce unlicensed music. The available official guidance does not establish an ideal countdown length or a meditation-specific design standard, so choose a duration that suits your audience and session.

Common countdown problems and fixes

  • The timer is not visible in the broadcast: Check that the “Starting soon” scene is selected and inspect OBS’s program output. Confirm the source is enabled and positioned within the scene canvas.
  • A Browser Source is blank or stuck: Verify the URL and network connection, then reload or re-add the source and test it before going live. A browser countdown depends on the page and its service remaining available.
  • A text countdown never changes: A text source does not decrement by itself. Check the timer script or file-update mechanism, including its permissions and whether it is writing the value OBS reads.
  • The countdown restarts after switching scenes: Check the source’s playback or timer behavior and rehearse the scene transition. If the countdown is intended to run only once, plan for a manual switch at zero rather than relying on an untested reset behavior.
  • The countdown ends on a blank screen or loops: Check the media file’s duration and playback settings, then arrange a timely switch to the meditation scene.
  • Unexpected music plays: Inspect the countdown file, browser page, and active audio sources. Mute or remove any audio you did not intend to broadcast, and use licensed material.
