You’ll need an eligible YouTube channel, FFmpeg, an audio file you have permission to stream, a stable upload connection, and the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The command below is a template, not a verified one-size-fits-all recipe: adapt it to your FFmpeg build and test it before going public.
Before you start
- Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup instructions.
- Prepare your audio. Use a rain recording whose license permits your intended YouTube use, including any monetization you plan. YouTube advises creators to confirm they have the necessary audio and video rights; permission depends on the recording’s own license.
- Install FFmpeg and check your upload connection. The exact options and quoting can vary by operating system, FFmpeg build, and audio format. Choose an upload bitrate your connection can sustain, and test the feed rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees stability.
- Decide how long the broadcast should run. Don’t assume that starting FFmpeg makes a finite audio file repeat forever. You’ll need to configure looping or a stop condition appropriate to your intended duration.
Get a YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the server/stream URL and stream key shown for that stream, then use them in your encoder’s output address. YouTube describes this workflow in its encoder setup guide.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories, and messages. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Build the FFmpeg feed
FFmpeg supports synthetic inputs such as a solid-color video source and can accept ordinary media files with -i. For a black-screen stream, the basic design is a black video source plus your rain audio, mapped to H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, then sent to YouTube as an RTMP/RTMPS feed. FFmpeg’s documentation covers command-line inputs and options and its filters, including loop behavior.
Use this as a structural example only. It has placeholders rather than a real key, and its option placement, quoting, codecs, duration behavior, and output URL need to be checked against your FFmpeg build and YouTube stream details.

Encoder settings to target
- Video: H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of about 2 seconds and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced recommendations for stereo audio are 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed in transit to its servers.
- Bitrate and resolution: Select values your tested upload connection can sustain, then review stream health in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
A black picture does not eliminate the need for a live video signal: the encoder still has to send a video stream alongside the audio.
Test the stream before making it public
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Studio, using the intended encoder configuration.
- Confirm that the Live Control Room preview appears and remains active, the sound is audible, and the stream-health indicators do not show a problem.
- Listen to the audio and monitor the encoder while the test runs. YouTube recommends testing and continuous monitoring; its live tips suggest setting up the encoder at least 2 hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Only after checking picture, sound, and stability should you switch to the intended visibility setting. Keep monitoring the feed during the broadcast.
Choose latency for an ambience stream
For rain sounds without live conversation, normal latency is a sensible starting choice: the quick response of lower latency is generally less important than giving viewers a stable buffer. YouTube explains that lower latency can help with chat interaction but may increase buffering. Choose it when interaction speed matters enough to accept that trade-off; see YouTube’s latency guidance.

Plan for duration and archiving
Make the encoder’s duration behavior explicit. If your rain file ends, decide whether your FFmpeg setup should repeat the audio, stop the broadcast, or use another intended arrangement; the placeholder command above does not configure any of those choices. The FFmpeg loop filter documentation explains infinite video-frame looping, but that alone does not establish that your audio will repeat. See FFmpeg filters documentation.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single automatically archived video for a continuous stream that lasts longer than 12 hours; plan recording and archiving separately if you need a copy. Details are in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Choose where FFmpeg runs
For an unattended stream, compare running FFmpeg on your own computer with running it on a remote host. The right choice depends on the intended duration and whether the process can stay online, the available upload capacity, how you will monitor and restart it, and the ongoing cost. A local machine can stop streaming if it sleeps, loses power, or loses its connection; a remote host still needs suitable configuration and monitoring. The cited YouTube guidance recommends testing and monitoring but does not establish that any particular host will be reliable or cost-effective.
