To reduce CPU use in a 24/7 Indian music stream, first identify whether OBS is overloaded while encoding, rendering the scene, or sending data over the network. Simplify the scene, lower frame rate or output resolution if encoding is the bottleneck, and choose an encoder and bitrate that your computer and connection can sustain. A dropped-frame warning alone does not prove that the CPU is the problem.
Diagnose the bottleneck before changing settings
In OBS, CPU-based x264 encoding and scene rendering are separate workloads. Rendering combines scenes and sources and uses GPU resources; encoding compresses the output video. Network instability can also interrupt a stream without indicating either kind of performance overload.
- Open OBS and note the selected encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- While the stream or a representative test is running, check CPU use and OBS rendering and encoding lag indicators in the Stats window.
- Check OBS dropped frames and YouTube’s stream health separately. A yellow or red connection status and dropped frames can point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, rather than a CPU problem. See the OBS Help Portal.
- Record the numbers and warnings before changing anything, so you can tell whether each adjustment helped.
OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide distinguishes rendering lag from encoding overload. Diagnose which one appears; do not treat all dropped frames as evidence that the processor needs an upgrade.
Reduce scene-rendering work
A music stream with a static cover image or a simple visualizer usually does not need a complicated scene. Each active source can consume resources, and some sources may continue using resources while hidden.

- Remove unused sources and browser overlays, especially animated or resource-heavy ones.
- For static artwork, use an image source instead of a browser source that recreates the same image.
- Use media files and browser-source dimensions appropriate to the output rather than unnecessarily large full-canvas assets.
- Disable or remove filters and animations that do not materially improve the stream.
- Check what is actually moving. A music stream can still have substantial visual motion if its visualizer or background is animated.
These changes target scene rendering and overall system load. If OBS specifically reports encoding overload, continue with output and encoder settings rather than assuming scene simplification alone has fixed the encoder.
Lower output work if encoding is overloaded
If encoding lag persists, reduce the number of frames OBS must encode or reduce the output resolution. OBS specifically recommends dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. A static or slowly changing music presentation often does not need 60 fps, but check that the result suits your actual visuals.
- In OBS, open Settings > Video and set a lower Common FPS Values value, such as 30 instead of 60.
- Run a representative test and check whether encoding lag improves.
- If overload remains, reduce the output resolution in the same settings area and test again.
- Consider reducing the base canvas resolution only if more targeted changes are insufficient; doing so can affect source layout and may require rearranging the scene.
Fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work. OBS’s guidance recommends lowering frame rate or resolution when performance is insufficient; it does not prescribe one resolution for every computer or channel.

Choose an encoder and x264 preset deliberately
If OBS is using x264
x264 uses the CPU to encode. OBS explains that faster presets use less CPU but are less compression-efficient, so matching image quality may require more bitrate. The best choice depends on resolution, frame rate, motion, and available upload bandwidth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf CPU encoding is the measured bottleneck, try a faster x264 preset, then assess both encoding load and image quality at the bitrate your connection can sustain. OBS’s x264 article gives example veryfast starting ranges for low-to-medium motion: 3,000–5,000 kbps at 720p30 and 5,000–8,000 kbps at 1080p30. These are OBS examples, not universal targets; YouTube’s current recommendations for a YouTube stream differ by codec and output mode.
If a compatible hardware encoder is available
Check the encoder choices in OBS and whether your existing GPU or integrated graphics supports a suitable hardware encoder. Hardware encoding may be an option if CPU encoding is the bottleneck, but available choices and results depend on the specific computer. The reviewed OBS help material does not establish that every hardware encoder will reduce total system load in every setup, or that buying a graphics card is necessary. Diagnose first.

Set YouTube bitrate and keyframes to fit the connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and not exceeding four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For the 30 fps examples below, use the column matching the codec you actually send:
| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | H.265/AV1 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Indian ISP or upload connection can sustain the bitrate continuously. YouTube’s settings page provides bitrate ranges by codec and resolution; check the full table for your chosen frame rate and configuration: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not increase bitrate to compensate for a faster x264 preset unless the upload connection and YouTube’s guidance support it. If OBS reports dropped frames with a yellow or red connection status, test a sustainable bitrate and investigate the network separately from CPU encoding.

Test the stream before leaving it running
- Make a test using audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Run it long enough to observe CPU use, OBS rendering and encoding lag, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health under representative conditions.
- Change one setting at a time, then repeat the test. This helps distinguish the effect of a preset, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate change.
- During a live broadcast, monitor stream health and messages rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain stable.
For a 24/7 channel, also verify music rights for every recording and any visuals you use. Encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted music, and the guidance here cannot establish the rights for a particular track. Check the conditions of your internet provider and local power supply as well; the settings cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
Common CPU and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports encoding lag and CPU use is high | x264 workload or output demands | Try a faster x264 preset, lower frame rate, or lower output resolution; test after each change. |
| OBS reports rendering lag | Scene composition or GPU rendering load | Remove unnecessary sources, browser overlays, filters, and animations; use appropriately sized assets. |
| Dropped frames with yellow or red connection status | Unstable network or bitrate beyond sustained upload capacity | Test the connection and lower bitrate to a level it can sustain. Do not assume a CPU upgrade will fix it. |
| Faster x264 preset reduces CPU use but picture quality worsens | Compression efficiency and bitrate tradeoff | Check whether a higher bitrate is both within YouTube’s guidance and sustainable on the connection; otherwise consider a lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| No setting change resolves the observed overload | Encoder availability, scene load, or another system constraint | Recheck OBS’s specific lag indicators and available encoder options before considering new hardware. |
