To stream from a Windows VPS, create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key into OBS, choose settings the VPS can encode and upload reliably, then start the OBS stream and verify the preview and stream health before going live. A VPS plan is not automatically capable of every OBS workload: check its available encoder, sustained outbound bandwidth, and any transfer limits before relying on it.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days before encoder streaming is available. Check the channel and live-streaming status in YouTube Studio before configuring OBS. YouTube’s live streaming help describes the eligibility requirement.
Set up the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a new stream or schedule one in Live Control Room. Choose the event’s visibility and other details there.
- Copy the ingest details: In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not share it publicly or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Enter them in OBS: Open OBS Studio and go to Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the server URL and stream key. If OBS’s YouTube integration offers an account connection, the manual server-and-key method remains useful when following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Configure a scene and output: Add the video, images, browser sources, or other elements your broadcast needs. Choose an encoder and output settings that the VPS can sustain; see the settings and capacity guidance below.
- Start sending the feed: In OBS, select Start Streaming. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then check that the intended picture and audio are present. For a scheduled stream, use YouTube’s Go live control when ready to begin the public broadcast.
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are production-planning recommendations, not technical prerequisites. Starting early gives you time to verify the preview and resolve issues before the audience arrives. YouTube’s encoder setup tips explain this workflow.
Choose OBS settings for YouTube and your VPS
Protocol and video encoder
Use RTMPS where supported. It is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, which encrypts the connection to YouTube. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The encoder options available in OBS depend on the VPS and its exposed hardware or software encoders; do not assume that a VPS includes GPU encoding just because it runs Windows. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance describes the protocol, and its encoder settings page lists supported codecs and recommendations.

Bitrate, rate control, and keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, never longer than four seconds. Its published video bitrate recommendations include the following values; they are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network can sustain them.
| Output | H.264 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 5 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings page accessed in 2026. In OBS, select CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds if the chosen encoder exposes that setting. Match resolution and frame rate to the content and the VPS capacity rather than selecting the highest available output by default.

Audio and color
For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate. For standard dynamic range (SDR) video, it recommends Rec. 709. In OBS, check the output audio bitrate and sample rate along with the video settings, and make sure the correct audio source is active in the scene.
Verify VPS capacity and network performance
OBS’s compatibility requirements do not promise that a system can stream a specific workload. OBS Project warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU demand varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. That makes the actual VPS plan—not simply the fact that it runs Windows—the relevant test. OBS Project’s system requirements explain this limitation.

- Confirm that the Windows guest exposes the encoder you intend to use, especially if the selected mode depends on hardware encoding.
- Check that the plan can sustain the chosen upload bitrate for the full broadcast, and inspect any outbound transfer allowance or cap.
- Test the scene at the intended resolution and frame rate. A demanding scene or encoder can overload a VPS even when a simpler configuration works.
- Run a speed test from the VPS and evaluate sustained upload performance, not just a brief peak. Leave practical headroom rather than setting OBS at the full measured upload rate; the exact margin depends on the connection.
- Test representative motion and audio, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before the event.
YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable on the available internet connection and testing before broadcasting. No general vCPU, RAM, or GPU minimum can establish that a particular VPS will handle every OBS scene, and the provider’s actual network, region, remote management, and traffic policies must be checked for the plan you intend to use.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
OBS connects, but YouTube shows no preview
- Verify that OBS has the correct server URL and the stream key for the same event currently open in Live Control Room.
- Confirm OBS is streaming and wait for the encoder feed to reach YouTube. If the scheduled event is involved, make sure you are looking at the right stream in Studio.
- If the key may be wrong or compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio, then replace it in OBS.
Stream health reports instability or dropped frames
- Reduce the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. The current settings may exceed sustained VPS upload capacity.
- Check the VPS plan’s outbound network and transfer limits, and run another speed test from the VPS itself.
- Inspect whether the OBS encoder is keeping up. Try a less demanding encoder preset or simpler scene if CPU or encoder load is high.
The picture stutters, freezes, or looks worse than expected
- Check OBS’s encoding load and VPS CPU availability; high resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity can overwhelm the available compute.
- Confirm the selected bitrate is appropriate for the chosen codec and output. YouTube’s recommendations differ by resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Review the preview for color or scaling problems and confirm the intended Rec. 709 SDR output when applicable.
Viewers cannot hear the program audio
- Check OBS’s audio mixer meters while the relevant source is active and confirm the intended source is included in the scene.
- Verify the audio output settings, including stereo encoding and the selected sample rate, then listen to the Live Control Room preview where available.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than operate a live OBS production from a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its service plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera. Nothing has to stay running at home, and StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start a StreamNeo free day.
