For a mostly static music stream, start with OBS set to 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 video at 5 Mbps, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps. Use RTMPS and Rec. 709 for SDR. Before relying on a 24/7 broadcast, test it on the actual internet connection, verify the music rights cover live streaming and any archive, and plan for the fact that OBS looping does not make a computer or network fault-tolerant.
Recommended OBS settings for a static music stream
The figures below are YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance, not an OBS preset. In OBS, set the matching output and stream options, then check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health during a representative test. YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps H.264 video for 1080p30 and 128 Kbps for stereo audio.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1920 × 1080 (1080p) | A practical full-HD choice for artwork and music visuals, provided the upload can sustain the bitrate with headroom. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Static artwork and slowly changing visuals usually do not need 60 fps. |
| Encoder and codec | H.264 | Matches YouTube’s cited H.264 live bitrate guidance. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Video bitrate | 5,000 Kbps | YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; its stated range is 5 Mbps minimum to 14 Mbps recommended maximum. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio codec and bitrate | AAC, 128 Kbps, stereo | YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s stated recommendation for stereo audio. |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. |
| Color for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit | YouTube’s SDR recommendation. |
For exact encoder guidance, see YouTube’s live encoder settings. OBS labels can vary by version and encoder, but the targets above apply regardless of whether OBS exposes them in a simple or advanced output view.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Prepare a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast, and obtain the stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it. Use the RTMPS server and key supplied by YouTube.
- Configure video. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the base canvas to match your artwork or intended layout, set the output resolution to 1920 × 1080, and choose 30 fps. If your artwork has a different aspect ratio, avoid stretching it; use a suitable canvas and add a background or crop intentionally.
- Configure encoding. Open Settings > Output and select Advanced output mode if needed. Under Streaming, choose an H.264 encoder, set rate control to CBR, bitrate to 5000 Kbps, and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. The encoder-specific preset and profile are not specified by YouTube’s cited bitrate table; use a stable option your machine can maintain rather than assuming one preset fits every computer.
- Configure audio. In Settings > Output > Audio, set the audio bitrate to 128 Kbps for the stereo stream. In Settings > Audio, select 44.1 kHz if available and confirm the correct playback device or source. Listen for clipping, silence, channel imbalance, and unwanted desktop sounds during the test.
- Choose the stream destination. In Settings > Stream, select YouTube or a custom RTMPS service as appropriate for your OBS version, then enter the stream key or connect the account. Keep the key private.
- Test before committing to a long broadcast. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test, check the Live Control Room preview and health messages, and listen on a separate device. Test the actual music and visual movement, not just a silent still image. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
Choose resolution and bitrate for the connection you have
Measure upload speed at the computer and network that will run OBS, at a time that reflects normal network use. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained streaming capacity: other users and devices can consume bandwidth, and shared networks may fluctuate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate.

At a 5 Mbps video bitrate, leave room for audio and protocol overhead as well as the recommended bandwidth headroom. Do not select a bitrate merely because a brief test once reached it. If the connection cannot sustain the 1080p30 target reliably, reduce output resolution and choose the corresponding YouTube bitrate guidance instead of forcing a rate the connection cannot maintain.
| Output target | YouTube H.264 guidance | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 5 Mbps recommended setting; 14 Mbps recommended maximum | Good starting point for static artwork when upload is stable. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Use a lower resolution if 1080p is unstable on the available sustained upload. |
| 1080p60 | 10 Mbps recommended | Usually unnecessary for a static music visual; use only if the movement and available upload justify it. |

Loop a track or playlist in OBS
Loop one local file with Media Source
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the local video or audio file. For a file that includes a visual, position and size it in the scene; for audio-only playback, pair it with the artwork source you want to show.
- Enable Loop so the file starts again when it ends. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if you want playback to begin from the start whenever that source becomes active.
- Play the scene and confirm that the file reaches its end and begins again without a gap or unexpected silence.
OBS Media Source supports local audio and video files on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The loop control repeats media; it does not restart OBS or restore a lost internet connection. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Loop several files with a VLC playlist
- Install VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.
- Add a VLC Video Source in OBS and add the files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then test the transition from the final item back to the first.
A VLC playlist is convenient when the program should cycle through multiple items. Confirm each file’s audio level, aspect ratio, and playback before leaving the stream unattended. OBS documents the source and its requirements in its Media Sources guide.

Check music rights before going live
Do not assume a song is safe to use because it is available online, because you bought a copy, or because you credit the artist. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. A match may result in a placeholder warning, temporary interruption, or termination if the content remains. The result depends on the rights and platform handling; a match does not mean every stream is automatically taken down.
If you have a license, check that it explicitly covers the intended live-stream use, the territories where viewers may watch, and use in any recording or archive. YouTube notes that a rights owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube’s live terms also make the provider responsible for having necessary rights, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.

For Indian music—such as Bollywood tracks, devotional music, bhajans, kirtan, or Gurbani—the same checks apply. The available platform guidance does not identify or endorse a particular Indian licensing provider. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its Terms of Service, and obtain permission from the relevant rights holders for the specific use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan reliability and archives for a 24/7 broadcast
A 24/7 stream depends on more than a loop setting: OBS must remain running, the computer must stay powered, and the network must continue to upload. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, checking the Live Control Room preview and health messages, and testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder. It also advises checking that a local archive file is growing. These checks can reveal problems, but they do not guarantee continuous operation.

Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a single 24-hour archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving the full program matters, record locally and consider dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions; verify current behavior in the channel’s Live Control Room. See YouTube’s guidance on live stream archives and DVR on live streams.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube health warnings | Upload capacity is unstable or saturated, including by other devices on a shared connection. | Measure sustained upload at the streaming location, reduce bitrate or resolution, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Retest during representative network use. |
| Stream looks less clear than expected | Output resolution or bitrate may be too low for the content, or the connection may not sustain the target. | Confirm OBS output resolution and bitrate, then compare the stable upload capacity with YouTube’s settings guidance. For a static visual, 30 fps is normally sufficient; increasing frame rate also raises the bitrate target. |
| Audio is silent, distorted, or unexpectedly interrupted | Wrong source or device, clipping, file transition, or a rights-related interruption. | Monitor the test on a separate device, check OBS audio meters and source selection, inspect the Live Control Room, and verify rights and any required Content ID allowlisting. |
| File stops instead of repeating | Media Source loop is not enabled, or the playlist loop is disabled. | Enable Loop for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video, then test the end-to-start transition. |
| Broadcast stops when left unattended | Computer sleep, power loss, OBS failure, or network outage. | Check operating-system sleep and power settings, test the actual network, and maintain a recovery plan. Looping media alone addresses none of these failures. |
| No complete archive appears for the long broadcast | The stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube may not capture such a stream, and DVR may be limited. | Use a local recording and shorter sessions if a complete archive is important; confirm the current archive status in Live Control Room. |
