Set YouTube’s channel-level filters in YouTube Studio → Settings → Community moderation → Content controls, then use the stream’s Live Control Room settings for subscriber-only chat or slow mode. Assign trusted moderators and arrange human handoffs: a stream can run around the clock, but that does not mean its chat is being watched around the clock.
Set the moderation defaults in YouTube Studio
Channel-level settings are the place to configure held-message review and blocked words. In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls and adjust the live-chat controls for your channel.
Choose a held-message review level
YouTube offers None, Basic, and Strict moderation for potentially inappropriate live-chat messages. Basic or Strict can hold messages identified by YouTube so the channel owner or a managing moderator can show or hide them. A held message does not become visible automatically if nobody reviews it; it stays hidden. YouTube cautions that “No system is perfect,” so treat automated review as a filter, not a guarantee.
For a meditation stream, a practical starting point is Basic or Strict held-message review plus trusted moderator coverage. Which level is appropriate depends on how much review your team can provide and what actually appears in chat; YouTube does not publish a universal recommendation or quantified false-positive rate for meditation streams.

Add blocked words
In the same Content controls area, add recurring spam phrases, scam terms, or other unsuitable words to the blocked-words list. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching listed words are blocked from live chat. Review the list as chat patterns change: filters may miss context and are not a substitute for moderation.
Choose who can participate
Chat can remain open to viewers, or you can add a participation gate when spam becomes disruptive. Consider how much friction a restriction adds for people arriving to listen, especially if the stream is intended to welcome newcomers.

Subscriber-only chat can run alongside slow mode. Subscriber-only and members-only chat cannot run together. Start with open chat if broad participation matters, and tighten access only if observed disruption calls for it.
How do I slow down YouTube live chat?
Slow mode limits how often a user can post. Set it in the stream’s Live Control Room rather than in the channel’s blocked-words settings.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to the stream in Live Control Room.
- Edit the stream and open its customization settings.
- Under Message delay, set the delay you want.
- Check chat while the stream is running and adjust the restriction if it is more limiting than the situation requires.
Slow mode does not limit the channel owner, moderators, or channel members. It can be used with subscriber-only chat.
Assign moderators and plan 24/7 coverage
Choose moderator roles according to the access people need. Standard moderators can clean up messages, time out or hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have broader in-chat controls, including participant mode, blocked words, and toggling chat, but they do not get access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.

- Give standard moderator access to people who need to handle routine chat and held-message review.
- Use a managing moderator when someone needs the broader in-chat controls, while accounting for their lack of Studio and Live Control Room access.
- Set handoff times and clear escalation expectations if you want chat reviewed continuously.
YouTube’s cited moderation tools do not provide a built-in 24/7 staffing service or guarantee unattended coverage. If nobody is available to review held messages or respond to chat, those messages remain hidden and users may go without a timely response. A 24/7 broadcast is not evidence of 24/7 moderation.
Review chat and decide whether to keep replay
Revisit blocked words and participation restrictions based on actual chat patterns. YouTube’s automated review may not catch everything; held messages can be shown at their original time or kept hidden, depending on the moderation decision.

Live-chat replay is on by default for stream archives, according to YouTube. You can turn it off for an individual archive. Decide whether your moderation policy and community expectations should also apply to chat replay after the live session ends.

- Moderation controls do not exempt a channel from YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube may disable live chat if the stream or chat violates those rules.
- Automated filtering can help, but it cannot guarantee that every inappropriate message is caught.
- Moderation settings control messages and participation; they do not staff the channel or ensure that a person is available to act.
Troubleshooting common chat problems
