A low bitrate still adds up when playback runs around the clock: YouTube Music’s documented Low setting has an upper bound of 48 kbps, which works out to about 0.52 GB over 24 hours under a constant-bitrate calculation.
How much mobile data can sleep sounds use in a day?
Data use depends mainly on the stream’s bitrate and how long it plays. YouTube Music lists upper bounds of 48 kbps for Low, 128 kbps for Normal, and 256 kbps for High quality. The figures below are arithmetic illustrations using those ceilings, assuming constant bitrate and decimal MB/GB; they are not measured usage for a particular app or sleep-sounds stream.

Actual use can differ because of encoding, buffering, network overhead, and other app activity. These settings are ceilings, not promises of a particular average data rate. Jio notes that audio streaming uses less data than video streaming, but regular audio streaming for long periods can still consume substantial data (Jio support).
Lower the audio quality in the app
YouTube Music
YouTube Music’s Android help documents Low quality as using the least data, with a maximum bitrate of 48 kbps AAC/OPUS; Normal is up to 128 kbps and High is up to 256 kbps. Premium members can select the streaming bitrate. Look in the app’s settings for audio quality and select Low for mobile streaming; labels and menu locations may change with app updates. If you normally want better quality on Wi-Fi, check whether the app lets you set mobile and Wi-Fi quality separately. A lower mobile setting targets the part of your use that can count against a cellular plan.
Spotify and other sleep-sounds apps
Spotify recommends using Wi-Fi and offers a Data Saver setting that reduces audio quality and images. Its exact controls can vary by app version. Other services may offer similar quality or data-saving controls, but comparable current bitrate specifications are not established here, so do not assume their lowest setting uses a particular number of megabytes.

Keep playback off cellular data
Use Wi-Fi, or make Wi-Fi mandatory
Connect the phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network before starting overnight playback. YouTube Music documents a “Stream via Wi-Fi only” option. When enabled, it prevents that app from streaming over cellular if Wi-Fi is unavailable; playback may stop instead of switching to mobile data. Spotify also recommends Wi-Fi for streaming. Check the current app settings because menu labels can move as services update.
Download audio for offline playback
If the service, content, and subscription permit downloads, save the sleep sounds before bedtime and play the downloaded copy. Spotify says Premium users can download music and advises turning off downloads over cellular; YouTube Music documents download-quality controls. Set downloads to Wi-Fi and confirm the track or playlist is available offline before relying on it overnight. Eligibility and download availability depend on the current plan, app, and content.

Google’s 12 March 2026 announcement says Premium Lite background play and downloads apply to most videos, while YouTube Premium remains the option for ad-free, offline, and background access including music content and YouTube Music Premium. That announcement is not a promise that every sleep-sounds video can be downloaded under every plan (Google’s India announcement).
Use phone and carrier tools to monitor data
Check Android mobile-data use
Use Android’s mobile-data settings to review which apps used data during the relevant period and, where available, limit background mobile data or enable Data Saver. Android says available options vary by version, so the path and controls may differ on your phone. Data Saver can help constrain or reduce mobile use, but it does not replace setting audio quality in the streaming app.

Set expectations with carrier alerts
TRAI’s mobile-data FAQ says operators send usage information after data sessions and alerts at 50%, 90%, and 100% of the plan limit. Check your operator’s app or messages for current usage and plan terms; alerts help you spot consumption but do not lower the stream’s bitrate (TRAI mobile-data FAQ).
