For an OBS-powered ambient music stream, start with CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, a YouTube-supported codec, and a bitrate matched to your output resolution and frame rate. Then test the stream’s health and upload stability before relying on it. Two issues need planning beyond encoder settings: YouTube may not archive a continuous stream longer than 12 hours, and music without the necessary rights and Content ID clearance can interrupt a broadcast.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
Use these as a starting point, not a universal preset. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; choose a rate your internet connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, and transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists the following recommended video bitrates:

These are YouTube’s recommended rates, not guarantees that a particular connection or encoder will deliver a stable stream. Its settings page also lists minimum bitrates; select a rate your sustained upload can support and test before going live.
Video and audio parameters
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as specified in YouTube’s general encoder guidance.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s general encoder parameters list up to 60 fps. Match your chosen output rather than assuming 60 fps is necessary for ambient visuals.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, subject to support from your OBS encoder and YouTube ingestion path.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
There is no universal codec winner established by these recommendations. Compare the bitrate for your intended output with the encoder available on your computer and the upload capacity you can sustain. OBS says its defaults are generally appropriate unless you have a reason to change them; its stream video and audio bitrates should be chosen for the service and available upload speed. Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
YouTube’s workflow is to create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder, configure the encoder, and start sending. Initial enablement of live streaming may take up to 24 hours, so complete that step before a planned launch. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enable and prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream. If live streaming is not enabled on the channel, allow for YouTube’s stated initial enablement period of up to 24 hours.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with others.
- Enter them in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter or connect the stream key. Use the YouTube-provided RTMPS endpoint when configuring the server manually.
- Choose output settings. Under Settings > Output, use the recommended bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate in the table above, with rate control set to CBR and keyframe interval set to 2 seconds. Choose audio settings supported by the selected encoder and ingestion path.
- Check video and audio. Confirm the ambient video is framed as intended and that the audio reaches OBS without clipping or unintended silence. The exact capture and scene setup depends on your source; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe a particular scene design.
- Test before the long run. Start a test stream, check YouTube’s stream health, and monitor whether your upload connection remains stable. OBS also recommends testing before the first stream. Do not treat a successful short test as proof of 24/7 uptime.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming from OBS and verify that YouTube Studio receives the feed. For a scheduled stream, also complete the relevant start/go-live action in YouTube Studio.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A continuous 24-hour broadcast is longer than YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If you need a complete replay, do not assume the YouTube archive will preserve the full continuous broadcast; plan stream duration and local recording accordingly. DVR rewind has a related caveat: YouTube says DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube’s DVR guidance covers this behavior. A local recording is a separate backup plan; it does not change what YouTube archives or makes available through DVR.
Clear music rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such material, it can replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the material remains. Even licensed third-party music can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions before using music.

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
- Confirm that the license covers the intended live broadcast, relevant territories, and any archive or replay use.
- Ask the rights holder whether the channel must be allowlisted through Content ID, and confirm that this has been done where required.
- Do not assume “royalty-free” means cleared for every live, territorial, or archived use; read the specific license terms.
Keep the computer and connection in view
OBS is a software encoder running on a computer; YouTube also recognizes standalone hardware encoders. No specific computer model or minimum specification is established by the cited guidance, so check that your chosen machine can run your OBS scene and encoder and test it under the intended load. Stable sustained upload matters as much as the selected bitrate: leave capacity for normal variation rather than choosing a rate your connection can only briefly reach.

YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed buffers
- Likely cause: The upload connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, or the connection is fluctuating.
- What to do: Test upload stability and monitor stream health. If needed, lower the output bitrate to a recommended rate for a lower resolution or frame rate that your connection can maintain.
The keyframe or encoder settings do not match YouTube’s guidance
- Likely cause: The encoder is using a keyframe interval over four seconds, a non-CBR rate control, or a codec unsupported by the selected encoder or YouTube ingestion path.
- What to do: Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; use a supported codec and verify the settings in the encoder you selected.
The stream is replaced, warned, or interrupted
- Likely cause: YouTube has detected third-party content, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.
- What to do: Check the rights and allowlisting status with the rights holder. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the required allowlisting is absent.
The replay is missing or incomplete
- Likely cause: The broadcast exceeded 12 hours, beyond which YouTube says a stream may not be captured at all; DVR may also be limited or unavailable.
- What to do: Record locally if a complete archive matters, and plan the stream duration around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits.
You cannot start the stream when expected
- Likely cause: Live streaming has not yet been enabled for the channel.
- What to do: Enable it in advance; YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
