To loop a prerecorded ASMR video into YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 before the input file and pace playback with -re. Then set the output codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio, and YouTube-assigned RTMPS destination to match your target stream. The command below is a starting configuration, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: test it with your actual file and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Starting FFmpeg command for a 1080p30 H.264 stream

This example assumes one MP4 containing both the video and the audio you want to loop, a 30 fps SDR output, and an H.264 encoder available in your FFmpeg build. YouTube’s current recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/asmr.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60
  -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_NAME"
  • Replace the file path and RTMPS destination with your own. Use the ingestion address and stream name/key assigned to your YouTube event; do not publish or expose the key.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps.
  • -bufsize 28M is an example buffer size for the 14 Mbps video rate, not a separate YouTube requirement.
  • This is a constructed example, not a tested preset. Check that your FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and options, and confirm that the output container and assigned ingest details work together.

What the loop and real-time options do

-stream_loop -1: repeat the input

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as looping the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i. The option repeats the file; it does not repair an abrupt edit. Listen to and watch the transition from the end back to the beginning, and edit the source into a smoother loop if that boundary is distracting.

-re: read at the file’s native rate

-re reads the input at its native frame rate; FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to -readrate 1 and useful when packet timing matters, such as live streaming. Place it before the relevant -i, as in the example. These two flags control file reading and repetition; they do not by themselves ensure that YouTube stays connected or that the event runs without interruption.

When audio is in a separate file

The example assumes the MP4 already contains the desired audio. If you use separate audio and video files, their durations and loop behavior need to be coordinated. Looping one input does not automatically establish that an independent second input will repeat in sync. Build and test a command for the actual assets rather than assuming the single-input example applies.

Choose bitrate and GOP for your resolution and frame rate

YouTube Help’s recommended bitrates below are configuration guidance, not ASMR-specific measurements or a promise of quality. They were checked on October 3, 2026. Select the row that matches your intended output and codec. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain and testing the available upload bitrate.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 recommended bitrate AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate
2160p (4K), 60 fps 50 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 42 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 34 Mbps 24 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 21 Mbps 15 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 6 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 3 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 3 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s recommendations, not minimums. For example, YouTube’s table lists 5 Mbps as the H.264 minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended at 1080p30; at 720p30 it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended. Prefer the recommended rate when your upload connection can sustain it, leaving headroom for other traffic and bitrate variation. If it cannot, lower the output resolution or frame rate rather than choosing a rate your connection cannot reliably maintain.

Convert the two-second keyframe interval to frames

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. At a constant 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. Set the GOP to match your frame rate: for example, use -g 120 for a 60 fps output. This frame-count conversion is arithmetic from YouTube’s interval guidance; check how your chosen FFmpeg encoder interprets GOP options.

Codec, rate control, and color

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported live protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). The sample uses libx264 with -b:v and -maxrate set to the same rate as a practical starting point for a steady H.264 output. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. The sample’s yuv420p is a common compatibility choice, but verify the color and format of your actual source and output.

For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. The example uses AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube lists 5.1 surround only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS, at 48 kHz and 384 kbps; do not assume the stereo example configures surround correctly.

Set up YouTube ingestion and launch safely

  1. Create or open the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room or through the Live Streaming API, obtain the event’s assigned ingestion details: the primary ingestion address and stream name. The API documents optional backup ingestion addresses as parallel destinations; they are not needed for the single-destination sample. See the YouTube LiveStreams API documentation.
  2. Use the assigned RTMPS destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data through Google’s servers. Follow the format expected by your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s assigned details. The API documents the ingestion address and stream name; YouTube’s API guidance allows these to be supplied separately or combined according to the encoder interface. Keep the stream key private.
  3. Match the event settings to the command. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval as a set. YouTube detects settings automatically by default; if you manually specify stream resolution, use the custom stream-key settings described in YouTube Help.
  4. Run a representative preflight. Start the command before relying on it for an event. Check the live preview for aspect ratio, audio presence and level, frozen or dropped frames, and the loop transition. Use audio and movement representative of the planned stream.
  5. Monitor the stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback and messages during the event, and check FFmpeg’s output for errors. YouTube advises testing before starting and monitoring stream health. A looped file does not establish automatic reconnection, process supervision, server uptime, or any YouTube event-duration policy; verify those separately for your setup.

For current encoder guidance, consult YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. For the command-line behavior of -stream_loop and -re, see the FFmpeg documentation. FFmpeg options and encoder behavior can vary by build, so confirm them on the system you will use.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom. Test upload capacity, reduce resolution or frame rate if necessary, and check other network traffic.
  • The command does not loop: Confirm that -stream_loop -1 appears before the correct -i. It applies to the input that follows it.
  • The stream plays too quickly or packet timing is wrong: Confirm -re is before the relevant -i so FFmpeg reads at the input’s native rate.
  • The end-to-start transition clicks, jumps, or changes ambience: Inspect the video and audio boundary in the source. FFmpeg’s loop option repeats the input but does not create a seamless edit.
  • Audio is missing, out of sync, or does not repeat with the picture: Check whether audio is embedded in the MP4. If it is a separate input, coordinate its duration and looping behavior explicitly, then test the combined command.
  • FFmpeg rejects an encoder option or the output is incompatible: Check the installed build and encoder help, then validate the container, codec, and YouTube-assigned RTMPS destination together. The sample is illustrative, not a tested command for every environment.
  • YouTube cannot connect or ingest: Verify the event’s current ingestion address and stream name/key, the RTMPS destination format, and that the key has not been mistyped or exposed. Generate or select the correct event credentials in YouTube rather than reusing an unrelated destination.
