These are different kinds of tools, not two interchangeable encoders. Castr’s prerecorded workflow is a cloud playout service; OBS is production and encoding software that you run locally. There is no independent head-to-head reliability test establishing that one will stay live more consistently in every setup.

Choose a cloud loop for an uploaded-video channel

Choose OBS for live inputs and local scene control
Use OBS when you need to combine live camera or microphone feeds, screen capture, graphics, or multiple scenes. It lets you set output resolution, frame rate, and video and audio bitrate, and it can connect to a listed streaming service or a custom server using a stream key. OBS Studio overview
That flexibility carries an operational cost: the computer running OBS and its internet connection must remain available for the stream. Consider who owns monitoring and recovery
OBS has automatic reconnect, but that does not remove the local computer or network as possible failure points. YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, using reliable connectivity with upload headroom, and monitoring audio and video continuously. Castr says its uploaded-file workflow does not require a local encoder, but no cited source establishes that any configuration is failure-proof.

For a continuous channel, compare more than the headline subscription amount. Check the plan’s bandwidth against the stream’s bitrate and audience demand, along with storage, concurrent-stream, and destination limits. The cited pricing page describes annual billing as having a different upfront bandwidth pool and stream allocations, so verify those terms for the plan and billing period you intend to use.
Set up either option without overlooking YouTube’s requirements
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16 years old. 2. Get the stream URL and key from YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the platform or encoder you are using. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the channel. YouTube’s encoder setup explains where these values fit in the connection. 3. Configure the source and test the result
- With Castr: upload the prerecorded file, choose a loop or schedule mode, and connect the YouTube destination using the stream details. 4. Plan recordings separately for streams over 12 hours

For OBS, yes: the computer running the broadcast needs to stay on and connected, and its real capacity depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. YouTube also recommends reliable connectivity, testing, and continuous monitoring. A mini PC may be appropriate for a local OBS installation, but the cited requirements do not establish a universally suitable model or minimum specification; match hardware to the actual workload.
