Most often, OBS reaches the end of a video because the source’s loop option is off, or a scene change hides or resets the source. First identify whether the video is an OBS Media Source or a VLC Video source; their playback and visibility settings differ. If OBS keeps playing in its preview or a local recording but YouTube freezes or drops frames, investigate stream delivery instead of changing the loop setting.

Identify what kind of video source you are using

In the OBS Sources list, find the source that plays the church video. Open its properties and note whether it is a Media Source or VLC Video. They are separate source types with different controls. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022, describes the settings below; labels may differ in later OBS versions.

Media Source

A Media Source plays a selected media file. Its Loop setting determines whether that file plays again after reaching the end, and OBS documents the default as off. Open the source properties and check Loop. If the box is unchecked, playback can finish without starting over.

Also inspect Show nothing when playback ends. When enabled, the source can disappear after the file finishes, making an end-of-file condition look like a failed loop. Check Restart playback when source becomes active if the source is used across scene changes: this setting restarts playback when the source is in the current scene and visible.

VLC Video

VLC Video is a playlist source, not the same source type as Media Source. Its Loop Playlist option is on by default, but that does not mean playback continues unchanged through scene changes. The documented default for Visibility Behaviour is to stop when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. If the video stops or begins again after switching scenes, inspect this setting and test the transition.

VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC.

Diagnose the symptom before changing settings

What you see Check first What it can indicate
The video reaches its end in OBS and stays on the last frame or disappears Media Source Loop and Show nothing when playback ends Loop is off by default; the end-of-file option affects whether the completed source is hidden.
The video stops or starts over after a scene switch Source visibility and activation; for VLC Video, Visibility Behaviour; for Media Source, Restart playback when source becomes active A hidden source may stop or restart according to its visibility settings.
OBS preview plays, but YouTube freezes, drops frames, or disconnects Compare local output with YouTube; inspect encoder errors, CPU load, local recording, and outbound connection The local media may be playing correctly while the encoded stream is not being delivered reliably.
The encoder cannot start the YouTube stream Stream key and YouTube Live Control Room configuration A stream-start problem is separate from whether a local OBS source repeats its file.

Check scene changes and inactive-source behavior

  1. Watch the Sources list during a scene change. Confirm whether the video source remains visible in the active scene or becomes hidden. A source that is no longer visible may behave differently from one that stays active.
  2. Review the source’s visibility and restart options. For Media Source, check Restart playback when source becomes active. For VLC Video, review Visibility Behaviour and choose the behavior that fits how your service uses scenes.
  3. Check Close file when inactive. This option unloads the file when the source is inactive or off the current scene and can cause a delay when it returns. It is worth checking if the source is slow to reappear; OBS documentation does not establish that this setting disables looping.
  4. Test the full scene sequence before going live. Switch between the scenes used during the service and observe whether the source continues, pauses, stops, or restarts. This helps distinguish an expected visibility behavior from a loop setting that is off.

Separate playback problems from YouTube delivery problems

Compare OBS’s preview and a local recording with what viewers see on YouTube. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and reported errors, CPU load, and a local archive. If the local output is healthy but the YouTube stream is not, test the outbound internet connection. That points toward delivery rather than the video file’s repeat setting.

If OBS reports dropped frames or the stream disconnects, OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance identifies an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. These remedies are relevant to connection symptoms; they will not turn on looping for a Media Source whose Loop option is unchecked.

Check the stream key only when the stream will not start

A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed. YouTube advises replacing the key in the encoder if a third-party encoder reports an error when starting the stream. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings govern whether a live feed can be started or stopped from the encoder. Neither setting controls whether an OBS Media Source repeats a local video.
