You can broadcast a previously recorded church service on YouTube without a camera by playing the video through an encoder such as OBS and sending that encoder’s output to a scheduled YouTube Live event. The video is prerecorded, but viewers experience it on a live-stream watch page. If you only need a scheduled group viewing, a Premiere may be a better fit; if you simply want the recording available to watch, upload it as a regular video.

Choose how the congregation should watch

Use an encoder-fed live stream for a live event page

Choose this when you want the service presented as a YouTube Live broadcast, with a scheduled event and live chat. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, and an encoder can send video without a camera—for example, by sharing a screen or managing a production. Here, the encoder plays the saved service recording and sends its output to YouTube.

Use a Premiere for a scheduled group viewing

If the goal is to watch a finished recording together at a set time, rather than to run an encoder-fed live broadcast, consider a YouTube Premiere. A live encoder is not required simply to schedule a video watch event. YouTube’s Live Redirect feature can send viewers from a completed live stream to a Premiere, but YouTube requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes for that feature.

Upload a regular video for on-demand viewing

If viewers should be able to watch the service whenever they choose, a regular upload is the simpler format. This guide focuses on Live and does not provide step-by-step upload instructions.

Check channel eligibility and rights before preparing the stream

  • Enable live streaming and verify the channel early. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. A channel with a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days is not eligible to stream.
  • Confirm permission for everything in the recording. YouTube places responsibility on the content provider to have necessary rights, including music rights. A church service may include songs, readings, slides, or other material owned by someone else. Check that permission covers both the online live broadcast and any archived version; local licensing requirements can vary.
  • Plan for automated copyright checks. YouTube scans live content for third-party material. A match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. An archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends. If a rights holder requires allowlisting, follow its instructions for the channel.
  • Protect the stream key. It is a publishing credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel. Do not show it in screenshots, slides, recordings, or public documents. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings.

What you need for the OBS method

For an occasional service, a computer running OBS, the recorded video file, and a stable internet connection are the practical basics. OBS is free and open source, with no watermark or usage limits according to the OBS Project. No camera is needed. This workflow uses OBS to play the recording into an encoder stream; exact control labels and playback behavior can change between OBS versions, so check OBS’s current help for its interface.

Set up and stream the recorded service with OBS

  1. Prepare the file. Confirm the recording plays from beginning to end, that its audio is audible and in sync, and that you have permission for all included material. Keep the file accessible on the computer you will use for the broadcast.
  2. Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and audience. Check live-stream eligibility well before the service; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  3. Connect OBS to the event. Use the event’s stream URL and key, or YouTube’s supported connection flow. Keep the key private. Make sure OBS is configured to send to the intended event, not another stream.
  4. Build a simple OBS scene. Add the saved service video as a playback source, check that its sound is routed to the stream, and optionally add a holding slide or title. Start playback and verify that the video and audio both appear as expected in the encoder output. Because the current OBS control sequence is not specified here, consult OBS’s up-to-date help for the exact playback-source controls.
  5. Check internet capacity. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Account for both the primary and any backup stream bitrate, plus other people or devices using the same connection. A speed test is useful, but test under conditions similar to the event and avoid competing uploads.
  6. Set up early and inspect the preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the right video and audio, then open the watch page on a second device—ideally including a phone—to check what viewers will see.
  7. Monitor through the service. Keep an operator available to watch audio and video, confirm the watch page remains accessible, and respond if the encoder or connection fails. Starting early gives you time to resolve problems before the congregation is waiting.
  8. End the event and inspect the archive. Stop the encoder after the YouTube event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Confirm the archive is available and check for rights notices or claims.

Reliability checks before the congregation joins

  • Play the entire recording locally, including its opening and ending, rather than checking only a short section.
  • Listen to the stream audio in the YouTube preview and on a separate device. A video source can play correctly in OBS while its sound is not reaching the broadcast.
  • Check upload bandwidth against the combined stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% reserve. Shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available during the service.
  • Confirm the correct event, title, visibility, and watch page, and verify access from a phone or another device.
  • Keep someone monitoring the broadcast rather than assuming that a successful preview guarantees the full service will run without interruption.

Other ways to send prerecorded video to YouTube

Approach Best fit What to consider
OBS on a computer An occasional scheduled service where someone can operate a computer onsite. Uses a software encoder and the computer’s connection. OBS is free and open source; the computer and network must remain available during the broadcast.
Dedicated encoder hardware A church that prefers a standalone appliance over a general-purpose computer. YouTube’s encoder guide lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and notes optional PlayToStream functionality for prerecorded media. It is not necessary for an occasional stream; current price and availability are not established here.
Cloud streaming service Repeated or continuous prerecorded broadcasts where the church does not want an onsite computer to run the stream. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded streaming. Check its current terms, price, and suitability before choosing it.
