To connect a YouTube channel to Switchboard Live, first enable live streaming on the channel, then authorize it in Switchboard through Add Destinations > Connect More > YouTube. Add the authorized channel to the Stream Group you plan to use, send your encoder feed to Switchboard, verify the preview and green receiving indicator, and then select YouTube and choose Go Live.

Before you connect: enable YouTube live streaming

YouTube live streaming must be enabled on the channel before you can authorize it as a Switchboard destination. Switchboard’s help article, Connecting YouTube to Switchboard Connect, explicitly states that this is a prerequisite.

If live streaming is not enabled yet, Switchboard’s How to Enable Live Streaming on YouTube guide says to verify the channel by phone and wait for YouTube to activate the feature. Switchboard describes activation as taking up to 24 hours; treat that as Switchboard’s operational estimate, not a guaranteed YouTube service commitment. Its activation article was updated April 24, 2025.

Connect and authorize the YouTube channel

  1. Sign in to Switchboard on a desktop computer. Open the Stream Group that should carry the broadcast. If you are creating a new group, continue to the destination-connection step during setup.
  2. Open the destination picker. In the existing group, click Add Destinations, then Connect More.
  3. Choose YouTube. Select the Google/YouTube account that owns the channel or has access to it. If the Google login can access multiple channels, check carefully that you authorize the intended one.
  4. Finish authorization. Click Continue when prompted and complete the account authorization flow. Close the success screen when it appears.
  5. Attach the channel to the right group. In the target Stream Group, open Add Destinations, find the authorized channel, turn on its toggle, and submit the change. Authorization connects the account; enabling the destination in a group makes it available to that group.

Switchboard says you can add multiple channels accessible through the same Google login by repeating the authorization steps. An authorized destination can also be reused in other Stream Groups; make sure the specific group you intend to broadcast from has its channel toggle enabled.

Send the feed and go live

Connecting YouTube does not itself send video. The encoder feed into Switchboard and the Switchboard destination output to YouTube are separate parts of the workflow.

  1. Start the encoder or streaming application that sends video to your Switchboard workflow, following that encoder’s configured connection details.
  2. In Switchboard, confirm that video appears in the confidence monitor and that the receiving indicator is green.
  3. Select the YouTube destination for the broadcast.
  4. When the feed is ready, click Go Live.

If the preview is absent or the receiving indicator is not green, resolve the encoder-to-Switchboard feed first. A connected YouTube destination cannot receive a picture from a feed that has not reached Switchboard.

For a scheduled YouTube event: use Custom RTMP

A scheduled event can use an event-specific Custom RTMP destination instead of the normal reusable account authorization route. This is an alternative setup for that event, not a required step for connecting a channel generally.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy that event’s Stream URL and Stream Key.
  2. In the relevant Switchboard Stream Group, choose Add Destinations > Connect More > Custom RTMP.
  3. Enter the Stream URL and Stream Key in their corresponding fields and give the destination a recognizable name.
  4. Start the encoder feed to Switchboard, select the custom destination, and go live when ready.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in text or screenshots. Use the values for the specific scheduled event and take care not to swap the URL and key.

Which connection route should you use?

Route Best fit How credentials are provided
YouTube authorization A channel destination you want to authorize and use in Stream Groups Select and authorize the Google/YouTube account in Switchboard
Custom RTMP A scheduled YouTube event with its own event-specific stream details Enter that event’s Stream URL and Stream Key in Switchboard

Why the YouTube channel may not appear or receive video

  • YouTube is missing during authorization: confirm that live streaming is enabled for the intended channel. If it was just enabled, allow for the activation period Switchboard describes.
  • The wrong channel is listed or selected: check which Google account and channel were chosen in authorization. Repeat the selection carefully if necessary.
  • The channel is connected but unavailable in the broadcast group: open that group’s Add Destinations panel, find the channel, turn on its toggle, and submit the change.
  • YouTube shows no incoming picture: check the confidence monitor and green receiving indicator in Switchboard. If either indicates the feed has not arrived, check the encoder-to-Switchboard connection before troubleshooting the YouTube destination.
  • A scheduled event does not receive the feed: verify that the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key were entered in the correct Custom RTMP fields and that the named destination is selected.

These checks cover the issues identified in Switchboard’s setup guidance; they do not establish one universal cause for every authorization or delivery failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than send a live encoder feed, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
