OBS and Switchboard Live do different jobs, so they are usually connected rather than chosen instead of each other. OBS creates and encodes the video feed; Switchboard routes that feed to destinations such as YouTube. Switchboard lists “24/7 Streams” as an Enterprise feature, but that label alone does not establish uninterrupted service, automatic recovery, or an uptime guarantee.
OBS vs Switchboard Live: the practical difference
| Question | OBS | Switchboard Live |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Production and encoding application: combines scenes and sources, then sends an outgoing feed. | Cloud multistreaming and destination-management layer: receives an encoder feed and routes it to platforms. |
| Can it send a feed to the other? | Yes. OBS can send a custom-service output to Switchboard using the service URL and stream key. | Yes. Switchboard receives the OBS feed and lets the operator start one or more destinations. |
| 24/7 evidence | A media source can repeat prerecorded video, but the documented integration does not establish unattended restart or recovery. | Its pricing page lists “24/7 Streams” under Enterprise. That does not specify an uptime SLA or prove uninterrupted streaming. |
| Public pricing | Not stated in the reviewed Switchboard materials; OBS is the encoder application, not the Switchboard plan. | No public dollar price is shown in the reviewed pricing page, which presents “Book a Call.” Confirm current terms with Switchboard. |
Switchboard says one encoder feed can be sent to unlimited platforms simultaneously. That can be useful when the same program needs to reach YouTube and other destinations. If YouTube is the only destination, Switchboard’s routing layer may not be necessary; OBS can produce the feed directly. The choice depends on the workflow, not on which product is a substitute for the other. Switchboard’s onboarding guide describes the encoder-and-destinations model, and its OBS integration guide documents the connection.
When to use OBS, Switchboard, or both
Use OBS as the production layer
OBS is the relevant tool when you need to assemble scenes and sources—such as images, audio, a camera, browser content, desktop capture, or prerecorded video—and encode them into a live feed. A media source can be configured to repeat, which can support a looping-video program. That feature is not the same as a documented system for restarting OBS after a failure.
Add Switchboard when you need routing or destination controls
Consider Switchboard when a single encoder output must reach several platforms, or when its destination controls, team access, archives, or advertised 24/7 Streams feature fit your operation. Its plan descriptions list unlimited destinations. The reviewed page lists Enterprise with three RTMP or SRT inputs, 3+ team members, 30+ day archives, phone support, and account hierarchy; Public Sector with one RTMP or SRT input, three team members, phone support, and a 30-day archive; and SMB with one RTMP input, two team members, and email support. These are listed plan features, not evidence of service-level guarantees. The pricing page does not state public dollar rates and directs visitors to “Book a Call.” Check Switchboard’s current plan details directly.

StreamNeo is #1 to try for this use case: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. Connect OBS to Switchboard Live
The documented workflow is to send OBS to Switchboard, verify receipt in Switchboard’s confidence monitor, and then start the destination stream. The confidence-monitor test does not itself put video live on destinations.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Prepare the OBS program. Create the scenes and sources you need. For a prerecorded loop, add a media source and enable repeat. Confirm the intended video and audio appear in OBS before connecting the destination.
- Get the Switchboard connection details. In Switchboard, create or configure the broadcast and obtain its stream URL and key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that broadcast.
- Set OBS to use a custom service. Open Settings → Stream in OBS, choose the custom service option, then copy Switchboard’s stream URL into the server field and its key into the stream-key field. Labels can vary by OBS version.
- Set encoder output deliberately. Switchboard’s guides recommend CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with 30 or 60 fps. Select bitrate based on stable upload capacity and the requirements of every destination; do not treat a vendor recommendation as a guarantee of long-duration stability. Its OBS walkthrough also suggests the “veryfast” CPU preset, but encoder choices depend on your OBS version, hardware, output, and destination requirements. Check current YouTube requirements before going live.
- Send a test feed. Start streaming from OBS to Switchboard. In Switchboard’s confidence monitor, confirm that video is visible and the connection is receiving. A successful test confirms the feed is reaching Switchboard; it does not yet mean destinations are live.
- Start the destination stream. Start YouTube, and any other configured destinations, from Switchboard. Its setup guide allows destinations to be started together or individually.
- Stop in the documented order. Stop the encoder first, then stop the destination stream or streams in Switchboard.
These connection and run-up steps are documented in Switchboard’s OBS integration guide and initial setup guidance. The guides provide setup recommendations, not an independent long-duration stability test.
What “24/7 Streams” does—and does not—tell you
Switchboard’s pricing page lists “24/7 Streams” under Enterprise. Treat that wording as a plan feature label, not a promise that every feed will remain uninterrupted. The reviewed product information does not define an uptime SLA, failover behavior, encoder restart automation, or recovery after an interrupted connection. Before relying on it for an always-on channel, ask Switchboard what the feature covers and review the applicable service terms.

There is a separate YouTube question: the reviewed material does not establish YouTube’s current maximum stream duration or archive behavior for this setup. Check YouTube’s current live-stream documentation for the channel and stream configuration you plan to use, particularly if you expect one broadcast to run continuously or need an archive to remain available.
Settings and operational checks for a long-running feed
- Bitrate: Choose a rate supported by the sustained upload available to the encoder and accepted by each destination. Switchboard’s guide specifically says to adapt bitrate to upload speed and destination requirements; it does not provide one universal 24/7 bitrate.
- Rate control and keyframes: Switchboard recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Verify that the selected values still match current YouTube guidance and every other destination in your setup.
- Frame rate: Its initial setup guide suggests 30 or 60 fps. Use the frame rate appropriate to the source and delivery requirements rather than assuming a higher setting is always better.
- Encoding load: The “veryfast” preset appears in Switchboard’s OBS walkthrough. Check OBS’s encoder load and output health with your actual video settings; a preset recommendation does not guarantee stable operation on every system.
- Loop behavior: OBS can repeat a media source. Confirm the file loops as intended and that its audio and visual transitions are acceptable. The documented feature does not establish automatic recovery after OBS, the computer, or the network stops.
- Destination state: Verify both the incoming feed in the confidence monitor and the actual destination status after starting YouTube. A receiving state in Switchboard is not by itself proof that a destination is live.
Troubleshooting the OBS-to-Switchboard workflow
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Switchboard does not receive a feed | Custom-service URL or stream key may be missing or mismatched. | Compare the OBS server and key fields with the current Switchboard broadcast details, correct them, and start the encoder again. |
| Confidence monitor shows no video | OBS may not be sending, or the selected scene/source may not contain the expected image. | Check OBS output status and the active scene, then test again before starting destinations. |
| Feed reaches Switchboard, but YouTube is not live | The test connection only confirms receipt; destination streaming is a separate step. | Start the YouTube destination in Switchboard and check its destination status. |
| Video or connection becomes unstable | Bitrate may exceed sustainable upload, or encoding/output settings may not suit the system or destination. | Review OBS output health, sustained upload capacity, CBR, keyframe interval, and destination requirements. The setup guides do not promise a universal setting or stability result. |
| Loop stops after a local interruption | Repeating a media source does not establish unattended OBS restart or recovery. | Check the local encoder and connection, restart the feed if needed, and ask Switchboard about its documented failure detection and recovery before depending on it for unattended operation. |
Or let it run in the cloud

It loops from the cloud, supports your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
