To stream multiple prerecorded podcast episodes on YouTube with OBS, install VLC, add an OBS VLC Video Source, build the playlist, and connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test episode transitions and the playlist loop in YouTube’s preview before making the stream public.
Before you start
- Have the podcast audio or video files available on the computer running OBS, and confirm they play locally.
- Install VLC for the OBS VLC Video Source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Use only episodes and music you are authorized to livestream. Downloading a file or having permission to listen to it does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- Decide whether you want a prerecorded-only broadcast or a show with a host speaking live. A microphone is optional for prerecorded playback; add one only if you will speak during the stream.
Build the podcast playlist in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the broadcast. Scenes can combine media with other sources, such as a still image, branding, or a camera, as described in the OBS Sources Guide.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources dock, click the add (+) control and choose VLC Video Source. Add the episode files in the order you want them to play.
- Choose playlist behavior. In the source properties, enable Loop Playlist to repeat the episodes continuously. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback. OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default, but verify both settings in the source properties.
- Add a visual if needed. For audio-only episodes, add a still image or other permitted visual source to the scene. Check that the layout is visible in the OBS preview.
- Check playback. Start the source or use OBS’s preview to confirm that the selected episode plays and that audio meters move.
For one file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source is the simpler option and includes a loop control for that file. The VLC Video Source is the playlist choice described in the OBS documentation.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream using the encoder workflow, or schedule one if you want an event page in advance. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish or share it.
- In OBS, start streaming. Wait for the incoming video to appear in the Live Control Room preview, then check that it contains the expected picture and sound.
- If you scheduled the event, use the preview to verify the feed and then click Go live in the Live Control Room when you are ready to begin. Sending a feed from OBS and making the scheduled event live are separate actions.
Choose video and audio settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams. For general RTMP/RTMPS guidance, YouTube specifies H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance to choose a bitrate and resolution that fit both your intended picture quality and the upload capacity of your connection.
Do not choose a high bitrate just because the episode file has a high resolution: the stream must be uploaded continuously, and insufficient upload capacity can affect stream health. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for compatible encoder scenarios, including some HDR or codec cases, but HLS has additional configuration requirements and higher latency than RTMP. It is not needed for this basic podcast playlist workflow; see YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Test the full playlist before going live
Run the playlist long enough to check more than the first episode. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio and video quality in its live streaming tips.
- Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the intended visual and audio.
- Listen through at least one transition between episodes to catch gaps, overlaps, or unexpected silence.
- Check what happens at the end of the playlist and confirm looping behaves as intended.
- Watch OBS audio meters and YouTube stream health while the test is running.
- If you will speak live, test the microphone level and listen for unwanted background sound before the event.
Troubleshoot common problems
VLC Video Source is missing or does not work
Install VLC and restart OBS if needed. The VLC source requires VLC; match its architecture to OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS—as described in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Confirm OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube stream URL and that the matching stream key is entered. Check that the stream was created in YouTube Studio’s encoder workflow, then wait for the incoming feed in the Live Control Room.

The preview has picture but no sound
Check that OBS’s audio meters move during playback, that the episode itself has an audible track, and that the correct source is included in the scene’s audio mix. Listen in the YouTube preview before going live.
Stream health is poor or playback stutters
Check the connection’s upload capacity and compare the OBS bitrate and resolution with YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. Test again at settings the connection can sustain rather than increasing bitrate blindly.
