If OBS’s network dropped frames counter is rising, the connection from your computer to the selected streaming ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That does not, by itself, show that an Indian ISP—or your computer’s encoder—is at fault. Check the OBS counter first, then test the local connection, sustained upload and ingest route in a controlled order.
What OBS network-dropped frames mean
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate. OBS drops frames rather than letting the stream buffer. The problem may be in the local network, the ISP route, the connection to the selected ingest server, or a bitrate that is too high for the connection’s sustained capacity. The counter alone cannot identify which one.
Check View → Stats in OBS and inspect the log. Network dropped frames are different from rendering lag and encoding lag, which point to different problems. This guide focuses on network drops. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide was updated September 30, 2024.
Why a good speed test may not be enough
A speed test is a brief measurement, often against a server other than the stream’s ingest destination. A high download result says little about the upload path. Even a strong upload result at one moment does not prove the connection can sustain the configured bitrate to a particular ingest server throughout an unattended stream.

Live video is sensitive to short dips as well as average bandwidth. A 2021 study of live-video ingest observed default OBS dropping frames when available bandwidth fell below the encoding bitrate; some observed bursts reached two seconds’ worth of frames. The same paper reported average stall ratios of 3.5%, 1.0% and 2.1% for three services under its controlled test conditions. Those are study results, not estimates for Indian broadband or any individual stream. The practical point is that a daily average or one speed test can hide brief upload drops.
Diagnose the stream in this order
- Confirm the symptom. In OBS, open View → Stats and note whether network dropped frames are increasing. Check the log as well. If only rendering lag or encoding lag is rising, this network-focused diagnosis does not apply.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If possible, run a comparable stream or sustained upload over wired Ethernet, keeping other settings the same. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can enable this test; it cannot fix ISP congestion or a route problem beyond your home network.
- Lower bitrate based on sustained upload. OBS says bitrate should be chosen against stable upload capacity and platform limits. Its connection guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guaranteed safe setting. For a 24/7 stream, watch performance over time and leave room for normal variation and other household uploads. The appropriate margin depends on measurements and platform limits.
- Test another ingest server. If the platform offers a different ingest server, change only that variable and compare network-drop counts and bitrate stability over a similar observation window. A different result helps narrow down the path; it does not prove which network operator is responsible.
- Check local networking and software. OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-priority utilities, outdated drivers, modem or router connectivity, faulty cables, network cards, switches and extenders as possible contributors. Start with reversible checks: temporarily test without a VPN or network-priority utility, check cables and router connections, and update network drivers where appropriate. OBS’s Windows network-optimization and TCP-pacing suggestions apply only to Windows. Its IPv4-only suggestion should be reverted to the IPv4/IPv6 default if it makes no difference.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. This may reduce dropped frames during capacity dips, but it does not repair the connection and can lower video quality. Monitor the resulting quality changes, especially in a continuous nature stream.
- Contact your ISP if the issue persists. OBS notes that ISP-side routing changes or congestion may be outside your control. Share useful evidence rather than only saying that a speed test looked good.
Separate broadcaster drops from viewer buffering
If OBS reports no network-dropped frames but viewers say the stream buffers, do not assume your broadband upload is the cause. Viewers use different networks, devices and locations. OBS recommends considering the stream bitrate and whether the platform provides transcoding options for viewers. First establish whether the broadcaster’s OBS session is actually dropping frames.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What to send ISP or platform support
- Date and time of the problem, including whether it is continuous or occurs in recurring periods.
- The OBS log and the exact network-dropped-frame count or percentage.
- Configured bitrate and observed bitrate over time.
- Platform and selected ingest server, plus whether switching servers or services changed the symptom.
- Whether the computer was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and relevant modem, router or network-software details.
- Repeated upload observations taken during the affected period—not only a download result.

What Indian broadband rules can—and cannot—tell you
TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum upload or download speed. Its broadband FAQ says providers must state typical speeds in tariff offerings and describes a requirement that at least 90% of measured samples during testing meet or exceed the declared typical speed. That threshold does not guarantee that an individual line will sustain a particular streaming bitrate at every hour or reach a specific ingest server without congestion or loss.
