To resume a podcast livestream after OBS crashes, use an external process supervisor to detect that OBS has exited and relaunch it with OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help when the stream connection drops while OBS is still running; it cannot restart an OBS process that has stopped.
First identify what failed
A connection interruption and an OBS crash need different recovery methods. OBS’s stream troubleshooting guide describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network-path problems. If OBS remains open, use its reconnect settings and investigate the connection. If OBS has exited, an external supervisor must launch it again.

Configure OBS to start streaming when launched
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that automatically starts streaming. Configure and test OBS normally first: confirm the intended service, stream key or account, profile, scene collection, and starting scene. Keep stream credentials private and make sure the selected account and event are the ones you intend to use.
- Test the launch parameter manually. Close OBS, then start it with
--startstreamingusing the appropriate method below. Confirm that OBS opens the intended setup and begins streaming as expected before adding automatic restart behavior. - Windows: Add
--startstreamingto the OBS shortcut’s target or pass it through your chosen task or supervisor. For an automated launch, OBS’s launch-parameter guide says to set the working directory (“Start in…”) to the folder containingobs64.exe. The executable location depends on how OBS was installed. - macOS: OBS documents passing launch arguments with
open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. You can use this in Terminal or an Automator workflow. This starts OBS with the argument but does not watch for a crash. - Linux: The reviewed OBS launch guide does not provide a systemd or other Linux supervisor recipe. Use a process supervisor appropriate to your distribution and consult its documentation for service configuration; do not treat the launch parameter alone as a crash monitor.
Add a process supervisor to detect an OBS exit
A shortcut, scheduled launch, or startup action can pass OBS its launch parameter, but something outside OBS must notice an unexpected exit and start the application again. Configure an operating-system or maintained third-party process supervisor to launch OBS at boot and restart it if its process stops unexpectedly.

- Set a delay and a finite retry or backoff policy. This reduces the risk of repeatedly launching into a persistent failure.
- Make the supervisor check for an existing OBS instance before starting another one, so it does not create duplicate processes.
- Use the correct OBS executable, account, working directory, and launch arguments for the machine. On Windows, set the task’s “Start in…” folder as described above.
- Protect credentials and avoid exposing OBS controls. OBS’s Remote Control Guide discusses WebSocket automation and recommends password protection against unauthorized control; WebSocket scene control is not itself a process supervisor.
OBS’s launch documentation does not prescribe a particular supervisor or guarantee loop prevention. Exact setup depends on the host operating system and supervisor you choose.
Test the full recovery path before relying on it
- Confirm that a normal, manually started stream reaches the intended destination.
- Launch OBS with
--startstreamingand verify that the expected stream starts. - At a safe time, simulate a controlled OBS process exit. Check that the supervisor relaunches OBS and that only one instance is running.
- Verify at the destination that the correct broadcast resumes or that you know how to start a new event. Restarting OBS does not guarantee that a platform will keep the same event active or accept the encoder reconnect.
- Test what happens if the internet connection is unavailable when OBS relaunches. Restarting the application cannot restore a network connection.
- Review stream health and OBS logs after recovery. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it in its encoder setup guidance.
Troubleshoot the failure that actually occurred
OBS reopened but did not start streaming
- Check that the supervisor passed
--startstreamingto the OBS process that it launched. - Confirm OBS has the correct service, account or stream key, profile, scene collection, and starting scene.
- Repeat the manual launch test. If that test fails, fix the OBS launch configuration before troubleshooting the supervisor.
OBS keeps restarting
- Inspect OBS logs and the operating-system or supervisor logs to find whether OBS is crashing again or the supervisor is misreading its process state.
- Use a finite retry limit and delay or backoff, and confirm the supervisor checks for an existing OBS instance.
- Do not mistake a frozen source for an application exit. A third-party project, Freeze Watchdog, says it can restart selected frozen, blank, or unresponsive sources; its documentation does not claim to restart a crashed OBS process. Its project page reports testing with OBS Studio 32.1.1 on 64-bit Windows and Linux and cautions that compatibility with nearby versions is not guaranteed. This is the project’s claim, not an OBS endorsement.
OBS stayed open, but the stream disconnected
Use OBS’s reconnect configuration and troubleshoot the network path instead of adding a process-restart loop. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames and connection problems; check the network, ingest server, bitrate, drivers, and firewall as relevant.

The computer restarted or lost power
Arrange for the supervisor to start OBS at system startup as well as restart it after an exit. Power protection may help with interruptions, but it does not replace startup automation or process monitoring.
