To schedule a YouTube live event, use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. To show a countdown on an encoder-based live feed, add it as an overlay in your encoder software; YouTube does not document a built-in countdown switch for scheduled encoder streams. Build a recurring channel schedule by publishing individual scheduled events and displaying the ongoing cadence on your channel banner.
Before you schedule a live stream
YouTube’s live-streaming tips say your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. You can stream from a mobile device, webcam, or encoder; an encoder is the relevant route when you need a continuously programmed visual or overlays.
- Prepare the encoder before the event and check the preview in Live Control Room.
- Confirm that viewers can open the event from the channel and watch page, including on mobile devices.
- Check both audio and video before going public.
YouTube Help puts the equipment question simply: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” The specific steps for adding a timer source depend on the encoder you choose.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Select Manage > Schedule Stream.
- Choose Reuse settings if a previous stream has suitable details, or choose Create new.
- Set the title, description, date and time, audience, and privacy. Review these details before saving. YouTube’s guidance says the default privacy setting is private for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older; you can change a stream to public, private, or unlisted.
- Save the scheduled event, then copy its watch-page URL to share with viewers.
A scheduled event can appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers may select Notify me. Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not start the encoder broadcast by itself.

Add a countdown: choose the route that matches your format

For an encoder-based 24/7 feed
Add the countdown as a source or overlay in your encoder, using that encoder’s current instructions. YouTube’s encoder guidance confirms that overlays are supported, but does not specify how to create a timer in a particular program. Test the result in the encoder preview or in a private or unlisted event before using it on a public broadcast. Do not look for a YouTube Studio countdown control for an encoder stream.

For a scheduled video Premiere
A Premiere is a different format from an encoder livestream: it schedules an uploaded video with a public watch page. You can select a countdown theme and length during setup, and viewers can set a reminder. The countdown plays before the video and is not included in the archived video afterward. Use this option when the event is a scheduled uploaded video, not when you need a timer over a live encoder feed.
YouTube also documents optional trailers for scheduled streams. Eligibility requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes; the trailer duration must be between 15 seconds and 3 minutes.

Connect the encoder and start the scheduled broadcast
- At the scheduled time, copy the event’s YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder.
- Start sending the feed from the encoder.
- Wait for the feed preview to appear in Live Control Room and check that the picture and sound are right.
- Select Go Live in Live Control Room to begin the broadcast.
- When ending the event, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder as YouTube directs.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is archive guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation or of archiving a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours.
Make a recurring schedule easy to find
A recurring programming schedule is a communication practice made up of scheduled events; YouTube’s reviewed help pages do not describe one control that publishes a complete 24/7 timetable for a channel. Use event pages for individual broadcasts and a channel banner for the standing cadence.
- Choose a cadence you can maintain and tell viewers when it changes.
- Show the regular schedule in the channel banner, as YouTube recommends.
- Share the watch-page URL for each scheduled event so viewers can open that event and set a reminder.
- Reuse suitable prior stream settings to reduce repeated setup work.
The event page and banner do different jobs: the event page gives viewers a link and reminder opportunity for a particular stream; the banner communicates the channel’s ongoing schedule. Neither is evidence that a countdown or schedule will increase viewership.
