You can run a sermon stream from a spare PC by feeding your camera and audio into OBS, connecting OBS to YouTube Live with the channel’s stream URL and key, and testing the entire setup before relying on it. The PC must stay powered, connected, cool, and awake; OBS compatibility requirements alone do not prove a particular machine can encode continuously. Also plan around YouTube’s archive limit: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a longer nonstop feed should not be treated as one reliably archived video.
Choose the signal path before setting up OBS
Decide what viewers will see and where the sound will come from. A church setup commonly sends a camera and soundboard feed to the PC, then uses OBS to send the composed program to YouTube. You can include presentation slides alongside the pastor’s video; Proclaim documents a workflow for combining slides and video.
- USB webcam: Connect it directly to the PC. It does not require an HDMI capture card.
- HDMI camera or video switcher: The PC needs a compatible capture input. If it has none, an HDMI capture card can carry the signal over USB. Check the camera’s output, the card’s compatibility, drivers, and operating-system support before buying. A new card is unnecessary if the PC already has compatible capture hardware.
- Audio: Identify the soundboard output or microphone you intend to use. A soundboard feed can provide the sanctuary mix; a microphone connected to the PC may suit a simpler home setup.
- Slides and graphics: Add the presentation output to the program if needed, and consider a title or static graphic for parts of the broadcast without live video.
Proclaim’s live-stream setup guide recommends at least 5 Mbps upload speed. That is a vendor recommendation, not a guarantee for every resolution, encoder setting, or shared network. Proclaim’s setup guide describes the equipment and slide-and-video workflow.
Check the PC and prepare it for continuous use
Download the current release of OBS Studio from the official project. Check its system requirements, but treat them as baseline compatibility information, not a promise that your specific PC will stream reliably. Encoding load changes with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

- Install OBS and open the Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers the available hardware and network conditions when suggesting settings.
- Start with a simple scene and modest output settings. Increase demands only if the computer handles the stream smoothly.
- For a long-running broadcast, dedicate the PC to encoding: close unnecessary applications, prevent sleep, maintain ventilation, and use stable power and network connections. These are practical precautions, not a guarantee that an untested computer can run nonstop.

Build the OBS scene and verify the sound
- Create a scene in OBS and add the intended camera or capture-card source. Add the slide output, title, or other graphic sources you need.
- Select the intended audio input explicitly. Speak into the microphone or play sound from the mixer, then watch the OBS audio mixer meters to confirm the chosen source is receiving sound.
- Listen to a test recording or private/unlisted stream. Make sure speech is intelligible and consistent, and adjust the incoming level if it clips.
- Check that OBS is not unintentionally capturing desktop audio or an open microphone. Keep the scene simple until the core picture and sound work reliably.
The OBS Quick Start Guide recommends checking audio meters, choosing devices manually if defaults are wrong, and doing a short test before the first live broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. If the channel has never streamed before, enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a public screen capture or share it unnecessarily.
- If OBS supports it, use the RTMPS ingestion URL provided in Live Control Room. RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted version of RTMP; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the PC’s encoding capacity, upload connection, and YouTube’s current limits. OBS explains the trade-offs in its OBS Studio overview: higher output demands more resources, and 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps.
Do not treat the 5 Mbps recommendation as enough for every configuration, particularly if other devices share the connection. Check actual upload performance and leave capacity for network variation and other traffic.
Test the broadcast before depending on it
A short test can catch setup mistakes, but it cannot establish that an older or unspecified PC will stay stable around the clock. Test the full viewer experience and watch the encoder while it runs.

- Check framing, focus, slide legibility, and transitions between sources.
- Listen on a second device to confirm that the stream’s audio is clear and synchronized.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload, and check the actual YouTube viewing page rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
- Run the test long enough to check for heat, sleep, power, and network problems. A brief test is not proof of 24/7 reliability.
For a continuous schedule, keep checking the PC and stream after launch; the available setup guidance does not establish a universal procedure that guarantees uninterrupted operation on every computer and network.
Plan for YouTube’s archive boundary
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours to become one complete replayable video. Decide whether the church’s priority is a continuous viewing feed, individual replayable sermons, or both. Schedule or end streams accordingly, and confirm how reconnects, broadcast auto-stop, and archive boundaries behave for your channel in its current Live Control Room workflow. Troubleshoot common failures
- No picture in OBS: Confirm the correct camera or capture source is selected and active. For an HDMI source, check the physical connection and confirm that the PC has compatible capture hardware.
- No sound or the wrong sound: Select the intended microphone or mixer input in OBS, then speak or play audio and watch the mixer meters. Check that desktop audio or another microphone is not being captured unintentionally.
- Choppy video or encoding overload: Reduce scene complexity, resolution, or frame rate, then test again. The PC’s capability depends on the chosen encoder and workload.
- Dropped frames: Check the PC’s network connection and competing traffic. Compare actual upload performance with the stream’s bitrate needs; a general upload recommendation cannot guarantee stability on a shared or variable connection.
- Stream will not start: Verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel, copy the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room, and check that the encoder is using the intended settings.
- Broadcast stops after the PC is left unattended: Check sleep and power settings, ventilation, and network stability. Test those conditions rather than assuming that an initially successful stream will stay live.
- Replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream’s duration and the channel’s current archive behavior. YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage applies to streams under 12 hours.
