Keep any live replay of the archive separate from that playlist: it is a different presentation, not a new podcast episode.
Choose how viewers should experience the archive
A YouTube podcast is a playlist of video episodes, not simply an audio RSS feed. Use a podcast playlist as the authoritative, browsable collection of full episodes. RSS delivery is a way to bring audio episodes from a feed onto YouTube; it does not replace the need to keep the YouTube archive organized.
If your goal is to present older episodes in a continuous live broadcast, treat that broadcast as a separate event. Its replay should not be added to the full-episode podcast playlist unless it is itself a full episode. This separation helps viewers distinguish an episode from a stream recording.
Set up the canonical podcast playlist
- In YouTube Studio, create a podcast or enable podcast features on an existing playlist. YouTube defines the show as a playlist and each episode as a video.
- Include full-length episodes from the same show, including all its seasons. Do not mix in clips, other shows, or uploads from other channels.
- Choose an order that fits the format: for an episodic show, put the newest episode first; for a serial show whose story builds over time, put the oldest episode first.
Keep this playlist as the stable archive viewers should use to find and play individual episodes. Use a separate playlist for clips or stream replays when you want to retain those recordings on the channel.

Connect an RSS feed without importing existing episodes again
If the show already has episodes on YouTube, choose an RSS import cutoff after the newest episode already on the channel. YouTube’s guidance for RSS delivery recommends uploading episodes after the most recent episode already on YouTube to avoid duplicates. During the RSS submission in Studio, set that date deliberately rather than importing the entire historical feed.
- Compare the feed with the channel’s existing full-episode archive before submitting it.
- Identify the newest episode already on YouTube and select a cutoff that starts the RSS import after that episode.
- Review the resulting feed selection before publishing, checking that older episodes are not queued for import.
For example, if the latest episode in the YouTube playlist is already present in the RSS feed, do not import that item again; set the import to begin with the next release after it. A cutoff based only on episode titles can miss differently formatted titles or reruns, so compare the actual episode dates and content as well.

Check RSS dates before relying on episode order
YouTube sorts RSS-ingested videos by the release date in the feed when one is present; if it is absent, YouTube uses the YouTube publish date. YouTube says it does not verify the RSS release date. Viewers may see the feed’s release date on some surfaces and the YouTube publish date on others, so fix incorrect feed metadata before import if chronological order matters.
Review the feed dates against the intended sequence before connecting it. This matters especially when importing older episodes or correcting an archive: an inaccurate release date can place a video in a surprising position even if the upload itself is correct.

Schedule an archive stream without confusing it with episodes
Use YouTube Live Control Room to schedule the broadcast, give it clear metadata, and consider enabling DVR so viewers can pause and rewind. Reusing settings from a previous stream can save setup work, but check the event metadata and stream key or other stream settings rather than assuming every reused value is right for the new broadcast.
After the event, place its replay in a separate stream or archive playlist if it is not a full podcast episode. Keep the podcast playlist focused on individual episodes so viewers can tell where the canonical show archive ends and a live presentation begins.

Protect the recording and verify the replay
YouTube says it can automatically archive a stream shorter than 12 hours, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording as a backup, monitor during the broadcast that the local file is growing, and verify the YouTube replay after the stream ends. Do not treat the platform replay as your only copy of a long archive broadcast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Confirm rights before broadcasting episodes live
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for the content, including music licensing rights. An episode having previously been available as an on-demand upload does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to rebroadcast it live. Check the rights for each episode and any included music before scheduling the stream; permissions can vary by content, territory, and license.
