To make OBS start streaming when it opens, launch it with --startstreaming. To recover after a computer reboot, also configure Windows to launch OBS at startup; to recover from a temporary stream disconnect, enable OBS output auto-reconnect. These are separate mechanisms: none alone covers a reboot, a crashed OBS process, and a dropped connection.
Choose the recovery you need

Prepare OBS before automating it
First configure the fireplace stream so that a manual start works. Save the OBS profile and scene collection, confirm the scene contains the intended video or media source, and select the correct streaming service and stream key. Start the stream manually once and confirm it appears as expected on YouTube before relying on unattended launch.
Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the key stored in OBS.
Start streaming whenever OBS launches
Add the launch parameter
- Find the OBS shortcut you want to use, or create one that points to
obs64.exe. - Open the shortcut’s properties and add
--startstreamingafter the executable path in the Target field. Preserve the existing path and put the parameter outside the closing quotation mark. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Your installed path may differ. - If the setup needs a specific scene collection, profile, or scene, OBS documents the additional parameters
--collection,--profile, and--scene. Use the exact names of the saved items. - Launch OBS with that shortcut. Confirm that it opens the intended setup and starts streaming; do not assume the parameter works with a different shortcut or launch method.

Restart the stream after a Windows reboot
The launch parameter only takes effect when OBS is launched. To start again after a reboot, configure Windows to launch the shortcut or a scheduled task at startup. The precise task options depend on whether OBS should run after a user signs in or in a system-start context; choose a setup that matches how your OBS profile, desktop session, and streaming key are available.
- Use the shortcut containing
--startstreamingas the program Windows launches, or configure the equivalent arguments in Task Scheduler. - For a scheduled or other automated OBS launch, set the task’s working directory (sometimes labeled “Start in”) to the directory containing
obs64.exe. OBS documents this working-directory requirement in its launch parameters guide. - Set the startup trigger appropriate to your Windows configuration. A Startup-folder shortcut or Task Scheduler are possible approaches; a Windows 11 24/7-stream forum discussion describes these as options, but it is not a universal configuration recipe. - Restart Windows during a planned test and verify that OBS opens, selects the intended scene, starts streaming, and remains connected. Monitor the stream before leaving it unattended.
Configure OBS to reconnect after a dropped output
Auto-reconnect addresses a temporary output disconnection while OBS itself remains open. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and find the Network section’s automatic reconnect controls, if present in your version. Enable reconnect and choose a retry delay and maximum retry count appropriate for your connection. Reconnect is not a watchdog. If OBS exits or Windows restarts, the output setting cannot reopen the application; use startup launch for reboot recovery and a separate process supervisor if you also need recovery from an OBS crash.
Account for network startup and power failures
A PC or OBS task can start before a modem, router, or other network equipment is ready after a power interruption. In a Windows 11 birdhouse-camera 24/7-stream forum thread, a participant raises this as a possible cause of an initial connection failure and suggests waiting for connectivity before launching or restarting OBS. If your stream must recover from a brief power cut, a UPS sized for the computer and network equipment may help bridge that interruption. It is optional, does not restart OBS, and cannot guarantee that your internet service remains available.
What OBS automation cannot guarantee
- OBS crash: neither
--startstreamingnor output auto-reconnect restarts an exited process. Add an OS-level supervisor or monitoring script if crash recovery is required; the right implementation depends on Windows, macOS, or Linux and the session in which OBS runs. - Platform or connection outage: local automation cannot ensure YouTube or your internet connection is available.
- Content rights: use fireplace footage and audio you own or have permission to stream. A long-running loop does not grant rights to third-party music, video, or ambient recordings. YouTube’s monetization and reused-content review is separate from whether OBS can stream; check StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist before choosing material.
