To let an encoder start and stop a recurring church YouTube livestream, enable Auto-start and Auto-stop in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room stream settings, then save the stream URL and key in your encoder. Those settings do not restart OBS or another encoder after a crash, power cut, or internet outage; that requires a separately tested recovery plan.
What YouTube’s automatic settings do
YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop options let the encoder start or stop the YouTube stream when it begins or stops sending video. They are useful for recurring services because an operator can start the encoder without separately starting the stream in YouTube each time, depending on the workflow. YouTube’s Live stream settings guidance says these controls apply when enabled in the stream settings.
They are not a crash-restart feature. If OBS closes unexpectedly, the computer loses power, or the church’s internet connection fails, YouTube’s settings do not establish that the encoder will relaunch or that the live page will recover uninterrupted. Treat encoder recovery and backup connectivity as separate reliability needs.
Set up a recurring church livestream
- Open the encoder workflow. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then use the encoder workflow. Create a stream or select one for the service. If the same encoder setup will be reused, choose a reusable or custom stream key where the workflow offers it. A stream key authorizes the encoder to send video to your channel, so keep it private and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
- Enable automatic start and stop. In the stream settings, turn on Auto-start and Auto-stop. When creating another service based on an earlier stream, use Reuse settings, then verify both options are still enabled: YouTube copies those selections when settings are reused.
- Configure the encoder. Copy YouTube’s stream URL/server address and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Select the correct camera or video source, audio input, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Choose values that your equipment and upload connection can sustain reliably rather than selecting the highest available quality by default.
- Check the preview before the service. Start the encoder and confirm that the picture and sound appear in Live Control Room and that stream health is acceptable. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow has you wait for the preview and select Go live when ready; the exact start sequence depends on the stream settings and workflow.
- End the stream cleanly. Stop the encoder or the content it is sending. With Auto-stop enabled, the encoder can control the YouTube stream’s stop. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a longer stream will be archived automatically.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance to choose settings for the selected output resolution. The relevant operational points are:

- Connection and bitrate: choose a bitrate the church’s upload connection can deliver consistently, and run an upload speed test as YouTube recommends. Leave capacity for normal network variation and other traffic instead of treating a speed-test peak as guaranteed streaming bandwidth.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Transport: YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the server address supplied in Live Control Room.
- Codec: YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported codecs. Check the current requirements for the chosen resolution and encoder before the event.
- Realistic test: test with the same kind of movement and audio as the service. A static test image may not reveal problems that appear during singing, camera movement, or speech.
Plan separately for crashes and outages
If the encoder process crashes, the computer shuts down, or the primary internet path fails, Auto-start and Auto-stop do not themselves restore the encoder signal. YouTube recommends rehearsing backup-encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then check whether the player switches to the backup encoder. For either approach, test the actual encoder, power arrangement, network path, and backup procedure before relying on it during a service. Do not describe YouTube’s start/stop toggles as automatic disaster recovery.

Pre-service checklist
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend preparing encoder streams at least 2 hours before the event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before it. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming.
- Confirm the correct stream, stream URL, and protected stream key are configured.
- Check that Auto-start and Auto-stop remain enabled, including on streams created with Reuse settings.
- Start early enough to confirm the Live Control Room preview, stream health, picture, and audio.
- Open the channel’s watch page and verify the stream from a mobile device.
- Check local recording files if the church is recording a separate archive.
- Rehearse the backup-encoder handoff in advance if continuity during encoder failure matters.
