If a Restream pre-recorded video does not appear or play on YouTube, check the scheduled event and selected destination first, then the video file, YouTube access, and finally whether YouTube can receive a direct test stream. The title of the problem alone does not reveal whether the event failed to start, the picture is black or buffering, or the audio is missing, so use the symptom-based checks below rather than assuming one cause.
First identify what is failing
Before changing settings, note the event status in Restream, the exact error text, whether the scheduled event appears in YouTube Studio, and whether a direct YouTube test works. This helps separate an event or connection problem from a file or playback-quality problem.
- No event or stream appears on YouTube: check the schedule, destination selection, channel eligibility and connection.
- Restream says “Sending Data” or YouTube cannot see the stream: follow the destination and connection checks below.
- The stream starts, but the picture buffers or is black, or there is no sound: inspect the source file and its encoding settings.
Check the scheduled event and YouTube destination
- In Restream, open the pre-recorded event and verify that it is the expected event and that its scheduled time is correct.
- Confirm that the intended YouTube channel is selected as a destination. Restream’s event workflow lets you select an uploaded or existing video, fill in event details, select destinations, and create the event. See Restream’s pre-recorded video instructions.
- Check the event in YouTube Studio. If it was created in the YouTube mobile app, Restream warns that it is mobile-only and attempts to start it through Restream fail.
- Restream documents scheduled pre-recorded events as starting automatically at the scheduled time. Do not assume that YouTube always needs a separate manual Go Live action for this workflow. Restream notes that some other destinations may require an additional start action, but its example does not list YouTube.
Check the video file before changing stream settings
Restream’s required pre-recorded-video file specifications are a supported container, H.264 video, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its supported containers are MP4, MOV, M4V, and MKV. If the source uses an unsupported format, Restream says to convert it to MP4. See Restream’s file requirements.
| Check | Restream requirement or recommendation | What to do if it does not match |
|---|---|---|
| Container | MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV | Convert an unsupported source to MP4. |
| Video encoding | H.264 | Re-encode the video as H.264. |
| Audio encoding | AAC | Re-encode the audio as AAC if necessary. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Set the interval to two seconds when exporting or encoding. |
Use the recommendations as a second pass
Restream recommends Full HD 1080p, 30 or 60 FPS, and constant bitrate (CBR). It notes that a variable-bitrate (VBR) source may need re-encoding and that the appropriate bitrate depends on the destination platforms. Restream also recommends adding 15–20 seconds of padding at both the beginning and end of the video to give destination platforms time to process the stream. These are recommendations, not substitutes for checking the required file specifications.

Verify that YouTube can accept the live stream
For first-time YouTube live streaming, Restream says phone verification is required and YouTube may take 24 hours to enable live streaming afterward. The account connected to Restream must own the YouTube channel; a manager or editor account alone is not enough. See Restream’s YouTube connection guide.
If the event is absent or will not start, confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the correct owning account is connected. If you have recently changed permissions or the connection appears stale, proceed to the reconnect steps below.

Troubleshoot “Sending Data” or a stream missing from YouTube
Restream’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking live-stream eligibility and stream settings, reconnecting the YouTube channel if permissions are in order, and testing the destination directly. See Restream’s “Sending Data” and visibility troubleshooting.
- Confirm live streaming is enabled on the YouTube channel and that the connected account owns it.
- Check that the stream settings match YouTube’s supported settings in the next section.
- If access is correct but the connection still fails, remove and reconnect the YouTube channel in Restream. As part of this reconnect sequence, reset the stream key in YouTube Studio and use the current key for the connection.
- Run a direct live-stream test from YouTube, bypassing Restream. If the direct test fails too, Restream advises contacting YouTube support; the problem is then not isolated to the Restream route.
Compare the stream settings with YouTube’s guidance
Restream’s YouTube connection guide lists the following recommended input settings. The appropriate bitrate varies with resolution and frame rate, so do not treat one bitrate as correct for every video. See Restream’s YouTube settings guidance.
