You can send a podcast stream from OBS to YouTube by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copying its stream URL and key into OBS, configuring audio and video output, then testing the feed in Live Control Room. That connects the encoder; it does not by itself make a computer, power supply, or internet connection reliable enough for unattended 24/7 broadcasting. Use the setup below for the stream, then plan separately for interruptions, restarts, and archives.
How do I stream a podcast 24/7?
There are two practical approaches: keep one OBS encoder session running continuously, or divide the broadcast into shorter scheduled sessions or use a separately managed continuous-stream host. OBS handles encoding and sending the feed; uninterrupted operation also depends on the computer, power, network, playback source, and how you respond to failures.
| Approach | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One continuous OBS stream | Maintains one live destination while the encoder and connection continue sending. | You must plan for interruptions and recovery. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume a longer uninterrupted stream will produce a complete replay. |
| Shorter scheduled sessions or a separate continuous-stream host | May make episode boundaries, archives, and recovery easier to manage, depending on the service. | Adds operational steps or a service dependency. Compare restart behavior, archive handling, outage recovery, and current terms before choosing. |
YouTube’s documentation explains encoder setup and archiving, but does not compare hosting services or establish a guaranteed OBS recovery design. Choose based on the behavior you can verify in your own setup.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also states a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. These requirements come from YouTube’s eligibility guidance; check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before scheduling.

How do I connect OBS to YouTube Live?
- Create or schedule the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream. In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key.
- Configure OBS: Open OBS stream settings. Choose the applicable streaming service if it is available; otherwise enter the server URL and stream key in the relevant fields. Use YouTube’s current encoder instructions if the labels or workflow differ in your version.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s stream-management controls to reset it and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room: Start streaming in OBS and confirm that YouTube receives the preview. Check both picture and sound before using the platform’s Go Live controls as appropriate.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Its encoder setup guide covers the connection workflow, while stream management guidance explains the URL, key, and reset process.

Prepare podcast audio and video in OBS
For a live-hosted podcast
Add the microphone or other audio input you intend to use and confirm that OBS shows a healthy signal when you speak. Monitor the audio in a representative test so you catch silence, unintended sources, or levels that are difficult to hear before viewers do. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists microphones and preamps as examples of audio equipment used with encoders. A USB microphone is an optional category to consider if you need live narration; no particular model is implied.
For a prerecorded episode loop
Route the playback source into OBS and verify that the intended episode audio is captured. Play through a representative section and check that both sound and picture continue as expected. A microphone is not needed if the stream contains only prerecorded playback.

- Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
These checks confirm the program OBS is sending; they do not establish that playback will restart correctly after an interruption. Test loop behavior and recovery in the operating environment you plan to use.
What bitrate and settings should I use for OBS streaming?
YouTube’s standard encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For audio, its guidance lists AAC or MP3. Select a resolution and bitrate using YouTube’s current table for your resolution and frame rate, and make sure the chosen bitrate suits the upload connection. There is no single bitrate that fits every stream.

YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within the available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Check outbound upload capacity under conditions similar to the ones in which you will broadcast; a connection that is adequate on paper may vary in actual use.

YouTube warns that network interruptions can break a stream and recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring. Its streaming tips discuss upload capacity and preparation.
Plan for unattended operation and archives
A successful OBS-to-YouTube connection is not proof of automatic recovery. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not specify a restart strategy or failover design for an unattended 24/7 OBS setup. Before relying on one, decide how you will handle host-computer stability, power loss, internet interruption, OBS relaunch, playback-loop behavior, and alerts. Test those failure cases in your own environment; do not assume encoder settings alone will keep the broadcast up.
Archives are a separate concern. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a complete replay matters, do not assume one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will leave a complete archive; plan separate recordings or shorter scheduled sessions. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archive information.
Troubleshooting OBS podcast streams
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that OBS has the correct server URL and current stream key. If the key was reset, replace the old one in OBS.
- The preview appears, but the audience cannot hear the episode: Confirm the intended playback or microphone input is active and that its audio reaches OBS. Test the audio in Live Control Room before going live.
- The stream quality is unstable: Compare the total stream bitrate with available upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and test under representative network conditions. Recheck YouTube’s table for the selected resolution and frame rate.
- The broadcast stops when the computer or network fails: The basic OBS connection does not establish unattended recovery. Review power, connectivity, relaunch behavior, and playback restart procedures, then test the failure and recovery path.
- The long stream does not produce the full replay expected: YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance applies to encoder streams under 12 hours. Use separate recordings or shorter sessions if a complete replay is important.
