Liquidsoap can send a continuous music program to YouTube Live using RTMP or HLS. To keep it running around the clock, you need a continuously available host, a compatible Liquidsoap build and encoder, a valid YouTube stream key, licensed music and visuals, and monitoring and restart procedures. Liquidsoap’s documentation shows the output paths, but it does not establish a ready-to-run 24/7 playlist or guarantee unattended recovery; validate the configuration against the Liquidsoap release installed on your host.
What you need before configuring Liquidsoap
- An always-on computer or server with stable outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, then testing the connection and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s network and stream-health guidance.
- A Liquidsoap installation whose build includes the encoder and output components you intend to use. Liquidsoap documents
liquidsoap --build-configfor inspecting build capabilities; availability can depend on optional libraries. Liquidsoap encoding formats. - A continuous music source and a configured output. Check the syntax for your installed release; examples in the homepage and development documentation are not a tested, complete deployment recipe. Liquidsoap.
- A YouTube Live stream URL and key from the channel’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, or public repositories.
- Streaming rights for every music track and visual in the program. A purchased track or an online copy does not itself grant permission to broadcast it.
Choose an ingestion path: RTMP or HLS
Liquidsoap’s YouTube output reference documents both paths. RTMP uses an encoder and defaults to rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2; HLS defaults to https://a.upload.youtube.com/http_upload_hls. Both require a YouTube key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, so check whether your Liquidsoap output and build support the secure endpoint you plan to use. These paths are not interchangeable configuration choices: select the output supported by your build, encoder, and current YouTube ingest requirements. Do not assume a documented output example handles source failures, process restarts, or alerting for you.
Set encoder parameters for the chosen stream
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate encoding and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed 4 seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended video bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; for example, the table recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are settings-specific recommendations, not universal requirements for a music stream. The advanced guidance lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Liquidsoap’s development documentation describes %ffmpeg as the path for video and codecs or containers outside its other encoder set. Its homepage demonstrates an FFmpeg encoder using H.264 video and AAC audio, then calls the YouTube RTMP output with a stream key. Treat this as a documentation example, not a verified 24/7 configuration; confirm encoder syntax and available libraries for your installed version. Liquidsoap encoding formats · Liquidsoap homepage.
Choose a bitrate your host can sustain consistently. YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth, with about 20% headroom. Test under realistic network conditions rather than relying only on the host’s advertised connection rate.

Build and operate the continuous stream
- Check the installed build. Run
liquidsoap --build-configand confirm the required output and encoder capabilities are present. If an encoder is missing, install or build Liquidsoap with the needed optional library before proceeding. - Prepare a continuous source. Configure the music source and any fallback behavior so the output has material to play when a track ends or becomes unavailable. Liquidsoap’s homepage demonstrates a fallback source in a video example, but that example alone does not specify a complete unattended recovery design. Validate your source composition against the documentation for your installed release.
- Configure the output and protect credentials. Select the supported RTMP/RTMPS or HLS output, encoder parameters, and YouTube key. Keep the key out of public files and logs; rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Set up process supervision and alerts. Use the service manager appropriate to your host to start Liquidsoap at boot and restart the process after an unexpected exit. Monitor the process and stream, and arrange an alert when it stops or loses its source. The exact service-manager configuration depends on the host and Liquidsoap version; Liquidsoap output documentation by itself does not establish that the process will restart.
- Test privately or unlisted first. Use YouTube Live Control Room to inspect the preview, confirm both audio and video, and review stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health. Do not switch to a public continuous broadcast until the complete path is verified.
- Keep a separate recording if the full program matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should not depend on one YouTube archive as its complete recording. YouTube archive live streams.
Protect the channel and music rights
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If copyrighted content remains after a warning, a live stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Even if you have licensed music, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; without allowlisting, YouTube says a stream may still be interrupted. Confirm rights for both music and visuals, and any allowlisting requirements, before broadcasting. YouTube copyright guidance for live streams.
For a practical preflight, check that you have rights to stream every track and image, that any required channel allowlisting is active, and that the test stream passes YouTube’s health checks. Do not assume that buying, downloading, or finding a track online grants live-streaming rights.

Troubleshoot common failures
