You can turn a spare PC into a lofi radio stream by building an audio-and-visual scene in OBS, connecting OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, and testing the broadcast before you leave it running. First confirm your channel can livestream and that your music license covers livestreaming; then configure OBS to send a stable RTMPS feed. A spare PC can keep the stream going while it remains powered and connected, but OBS alone does not guarantee recovery from a power, network, or software failure.

Before you set up OBS

Check YouTube livestream eligibility

Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your intended launch. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements explain eligibility and setup.

Confirm the music rights

Use original music, public-domain material, or tracks for which you have permission that specifically covers the intended livestream use. YouTube makes the creator responsible for having the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, for live content: Livestream terms and conditions. A track described as “free” or a credit in the description does not itself establish permission. YouTube’s safe-music guidance discusses options such as its Audio Library and original music; check the terms for each track and your intended use.

If you licensed third-party music, confirm whether the rights holder needs to add your channel to an allowlist. YouTube warns that a live stream can be interrupted even when the creator has a license if the channel is not allowlisted. Its copyright guidance for live streams explains how detection and interruptions work.

Prepare a visual and audio source

Create a simple OBS scene with a static image or looping visual and the music source you intend to broadcast. The exact method for capturing desktop or application audio depends on your operating system and playback app. Before going live, play the music and confirm that its level moves in the OBS audio mixer. Use only visuals and audio you have the right to stream.

Create a YouTube encoder stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Choose the encoder streaming option and create or manage a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the flow; interface labels may change.

  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream. Do not post or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before resuming.

  3. Review the stream settings in YouTube Studio, including visibility and any available auto-start or auto-stop options. These options govern YouTube’s handling of the stream; they do not restart OBS after a PC, power, or network failure. YouTube documents stream controls in Manage live stream settings.

Connect OBS to YouTube and build the scene

  1. Open OBS Studio. In Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if it is available, then connect your account or select the option to use a stream key. If you configure a custom server, enter YouTube’s stream URL and the key from Live Control Room. OBS describes the service, server, and key setup in its Studio overview guide.

  2. In the main OBS window, create a scene for the broadcast. Add the visual as an image source or other appropriate source, then add the music playback or audio-capture source for your system. Arrange the sources so the image is visible in the preview and the music registers in the mixer.

  3. Set a conservative audio level and listen to the monitored output if available. Check that the source is not muted and that other desktop sounds or notifications will not unexpectedly enter the broadcast.

Choose stable video and audio settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder livestreams. Its published guidance supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings specify a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. The encoder settings and bitrate guide provides its detailed tables.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Setting Practical starting point What to consider
Protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends it for typical encoder workflows. HLS is an alternative for particular HDR or ingestion needs and has higher latency; it is not needed for this basic lofi setup.
Video codec H.264 is a straightforward common choice YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 support over RTMP/RTMPS; choose a codec your OBS version and PC can encode reliably.
Resolution and frame rate Start at 720p, 30 fps if it suits your visual and PC Higher resolution or frame rate needs more upload bandwidth and encoding capacity. A mostly static visual does not require a high frame rate.
Video bitrate For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube lists 2 Mbps minimum, 6 Mbps recommended, and 8 Mbps maximum These are YouTube’s published figures, with no publication year stated in the cited page. They are not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the selected rate.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for encoder streams.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
Stereo audio 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps These are YouTube’s published advanced guidance values; no publication year is stated in the cited page.

In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Under Settings > Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate. Labels and available encoder choices can vary with OBS version and hardware. Pick settings that the spare PC can encode continuously and that leave headroom on your real upload connection. A speed test is only a snapshot; it does not prove the connection will remain stable at that rate.

Test the broadcast before leaving it on

  1. Start a private or otherwise limited test stream using the scene, audio, and settings you plan to use. YouTube recommends that a test resemble the real broadcast, including both audio and movement.

  2. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Confirm that the image appears, music is audible, audio is not clipping, and the stream is not reporting connection or encoding problems.

  3. Let the test run long enough to catch problems that appear after startup, such as a playback source stopping or upload instability. Check the PC’s power settings so it does not sleep, and make sure the network connection and music playback can remain active for the intended period.

What a spare PC can—and cannot—keep running

With OBS open and streaming, the PC must remain powered, awake, connected to the internet, and able to play the audio and encode the scene. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do not establish recovery from a PC crash, power loss, network outage, or OBS failure. Automatic startup after a reboot, a process watchdog, and recovery behavior depend on your operating system and configuration; confirm those separately rather than assuming the stream is unattended or failsafe.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no video Incorrect service, server URL, or stream key; OBS may not be streaming Check the stream status in OBS, then compare its service/server and key with the current values in YouTube Studio. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
The image appears but there is no music The playback device or application audio is not captured, or the source is muted Play the track and look for mixer activity in OBS. Verify the correct capture source and device for your operating system and playback app.
Audio is distorted or too loud The source level is clipping or multiple audio paths are being captured Lower the source level, check for duplicate capture sources, and listen to a test broadcast before returning live.
Stream health reports interruptions or unstable delivery Upload capacity is inconsistent, bitrate is too high, or the PC cannot encode reliably Use YouTube’s health messages to identify the issue. Lower the resolution or bitrate, close unnecessary workloads, and retest over the same network connection.
Live stream is interrupted after copyrighted music is detected YouTube’s systems identified third-party content; a license may not have been associated with the channel through an allowlist Review the copyright notice and the track’s license. Contact the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable, or replace the music with content cleared for the use.
Stream stops after the PC restarts or loses connection OBS is no longer sending a feed; YouTube auto-start/stop does not restart the encoder Restore power and connectivity, reopen or restart OBS as needed, then verify the feed in Live Control Room. Any automatic restart setup is specific to the operating system and must be tested.
