To run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with a static image, create a YouTube Live event and use an encoder to send the still image as video and licensed music as audio. You can run the encoder on a computer you leave on, or use StreamNeo to loop uploaded videos from the cloud. In either case, confirm you have the rights to broadcast the music and plan separately for YouTube’s archive limits: a single stream longer than 12 hours may not be saved.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube also requires streamers to be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and encoder setup guide.
  • A static image you can use, an audio source containing music you are licensed to broadcast, and either an encoder-equipped computer or a cloud service that supports continuous prerecorded-video streaming.
  • A reliable internet connection for a local encoder. YouTube recommends testing before going live and choosing settings appropriate to your connection.

A static image does not make a music stream exempt from copyright rules. Make sure the license covers live streaming and the relevant territories; buying a track, crediting its artist, or seeing it described as “free” does not by itself establish those rights.

Make the stream with a computer and encoder

1. Enable live streaming and create an event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and enable live streaming if this is your first broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create or schedule a live event. In its encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it can send video to your event.

Follow the current on-screen labels in YouTube Studio, which can change. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the event and encoder workflow.

2. Prepare the image and music sources

  1. Add the still artwork as the encoder’s video source. Set its canvas or output resolution to the resolution you intend to send.
  2. Route your music player or other licensed audio source into the encoder’s audio input. Check that the encoder is receiving sound, not merely showing the player on screen.
  3. Use a clean image file and listen for silence, clipping, unwanted system sounds, or interruptions in the music. YouTube does not prescribe a specific image-looping method or music-player setup; these are encoder implementation choices.

3. Enter stable encoder settings

YouTube’s published recommendations for H.264 include RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. RTMPS is the secure ingestion option YouTube recommends. Do not set the keyframe interval above four seconds.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps

These are YouTube’s starting recommendations, not a test of a static-image music broadcast. Choose a resolution that suits the artwork and connection, and leave upload capacity for stable delivery. Audio quality and consistent audio input matter even when the picture never changes. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

4. Connect, preview, and test

  1. Paste the event’s stream URL and key into the encoder’s streaming settings.
  2. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before starting the public event.
  3. Listen to the preview and verify the image, audio level, and event visibility. For a rehearsal, use an unlisted or private event if appropriate.
  4. If recording a local archive, check that the file is being written and growing before relying on it.

YouTube recommends a pre-stream test; its stream-health guidance explains what to check in Live Control Room.

5. Go live and keep the system running

When the preview is healthy, follow YouTube Studio’s prompts to start the event. With a local encoder, the computer, encoder, power, and internet connection all need to remain stable. YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee unattended operation on a particular computer or connection, so monitor the broadcast and have a recovery plan.

Music rights can interrupt a technically healthy stream

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it if the content continues. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube advises creators with licensed material to ask the rights owner to allowlist their channel through Content ID.

YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say creators must have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. The terms do not determine whether a particular track or license covers your use; check the license and contact the rights holder where needed.

Plan for replays separately from continuous availability

A 24/7 channel presence is not the same as one reliably archived 24-hour event. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive backup. If preserving replays matters, plan shorter events and a way to reconnect between them; YouTube does not specify an ideal segment length or guarantee that a local encoder will run continuously.

Choose how to keep the broadcast going

Approach What it involves Main trade-off
Computer with software encoder Send the image and audio sources from an encoder such as OBS. Uses equipment you may already own, but relies on that computer, power, connection, and encoder remaining active.
Hardware encoder Use a dedicated hardware device to send the event. Can suit a dedicated broadcast setup, but is not required for one image and music.
Cloud streaming service Upload prerecorded content to a cloud service that streams continuously. Can avoid keeping a local computer running; check the provider’s plan and service terms before choosing.

YouTube’s encoder list includes software and hardware options and describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streaming of prerecorded video. A specific minimum computer specification, power draw, monthly data use, or uninterrupted-runtime guarantee is not established by YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the encoder signal Live streaming is not enabled yet, or the event URL or stream key is incorrect. Allow for first-time activation, confirm the event in YouTube Studio, and re-enter its current URL and key.
Preview appears, but the broadcast has no music The encoder is listening to the wrong audio input, or the player is silent. Select the intended audio source and listen to the Live Control Room preview before going live.
Stream health is unstable The selected bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or the local computer or network may be interrupted. Test the connection, choose a suitable resolution and bitrate, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Music is replaced or the event is interrupted YouTube detected third-party content, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. Confirm the live-broadcast license and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
The full stream is missing from archives or cannot be rewound to its beginning The event exceeded 12 hours, beyond YouTube’s stated archive threshold for reliable capture and DVR rewind. Keep a local recording and use shorter events if replay preservation matters.
