To make a continuous lofi stream, prepare a playlist whose tracks overlap cleanly, balance their perceived levels, and check every transition for dips, clashes, clicks, and clipping. In Audacity, place tracks on a multitrack timeline, select the same overlap range on both tracks, and apply Crossfade Tracks. Then listen through the full mix before sending it to YouTube.

1. Confirm you have the rights to stream each track

Check that each track’s license allows the use you intend, including YouTube livestreaming and, if relevant, monetization and an archived replay. YouTube says it knows music in its Audio Library to be copyright-safe for use on YouTube. If an Audio Library track has a Creative Commons license, include the attribution text YouTube provides. For music from other libraries, verify the license directly; YouTube does not make the same assurance for those tracks.

Copyright issues can affect a stream or its replay. YouTube Content ID claims may block, monetize, or track a video, and the action can vary by geography. Read YouTube’s Audio Library guidance and its Content ID overview before you assemble the playlist.

2. Arrange the tracks and create crossfades

Use a multitrack timeline so the end of one song can overlap the beginning of the next. The overlap—not merely placing tracks back-to-back—is what lets the outgoing track fade down while the incoming track fades up.

  1. Import the tracks into Audacity. Place each track on its own track in the project and arrange them in the order you want them to play.
  2. Choose an overlap point. Move the incoming track so its opening overlaps the outgoing track’s ending. Choose a section that gives the music room to transition; avoid cutting off a phrase or placing a strong beat directly against an incompatible one.
  3. Select the same time range on both tracks. The selected interval determines the crossfade’s duration. Audacity’s documentation does not prescribe a universal duration for lofi, so use the music’s phrasing and judge the result by listening.
  4. Apply the crossfade. With the overlap selected on both tracks, use Effect > Fading > Crossfade Tracks. Audacity provides curve options including constant gain and constant power. See the Audacity Crossfade Tracks manual.
  5. Repeat for every transition. A playlist that sounds smooth at one join may not work at another. Listen to each overlap in context and adjust the track positions or fade curve if needed.

Choose the curve by listening

Audacity describes constant gain as suitable for correlated material, while constant-power curves can help avoid a dip when the material is unrelated. Those are useful starting points, not a rule that one curve is best for every lofi transition. Compare the options using the actual tracks: listen for a level dip or bump in the middle, rhythmic or harmonic clashes, and a peak caused by the overlap. The Audacity mixing manual explains that mixing adds audio waveforms, which can increase the combined level.

3. Balance levels and prevent clicks or clipping

Tracks mastered at different levels can make a continuous radio stream feel uneven even when their transitions are technically smooth. Adjust track levels or use Audacity’s loudness normalization to bring perceived levels closer, then audition the overlaps again: combining two tracks can change both perceived loudness and peak level.

  • Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording

Audacity’s loudness-normalization manual identifies −23 LUFS (EBU R 128) as a broadcast target and a reasonable spoken-word default. It is not a prescribed target for a YouTube lofi music stream. No lofi-specific target loudness is established by the cited documentation, so do not treat that spoken-word reference as a requirement. See the Audacity loudness normalization manual.

Abrupt waveform cuts can cause clicks. Audacity describes short fades at cut points as one way to remove clicks caused by abrupt changes; inspect any edit where a crossfade is not possible and add a short fade if you hear an artifact. As the finished mix reaches OBS, monitor the audio meter and keep the signal below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. See Audacity’s fades manual and OBS’s audio mixer technical details and audio mixer guide.
