What the PS5 Switch emulator is—and what it is not
ProsperoEden is an unofficial project that attempts to run Nintendo Switch games on PlayStation 5 hardware. It is neither a Sony nor a Nintendo product, and the repository says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Eden’s team or Sony. The project describes the software as early alpha and warns that compatibility and performance vary by game. See the ProsperoEden project page.
This is a homebrew workaround, not backward compatibility built into the PS5. A normal console does not simply install the emulator from the PlayStation Store and start playing Switch games.
What the catch is: a compatible homebrew setup and your own files
You need a PS5 that can run homebrew, along with a compatible jailbreak or software setup. The available project and news coverage do not establish that every PS5 model or firmware version can be modified, so do not assume your console qualifies or follow a firmware-independent installation path.

You also need your own game files, keys, and firmware. The emulator release does not include these copyrighted console files; its README tells users not to download or redistribute them. The sources consulted do not establish the legal status of console modification or game-file use in every jurisdiction, or the warranty consequences. Check applicable law and the relevant manufacturer terms before modifying a console.
Which Switch games work on PS5?
There is no universal compatibility answer: results depend on the game, emulator build, and setup. The project itself warns that performance and compatibility vary. Notebookcheck’s October 3, 2026 report recorded these game-specific observations; they are not independent benchmark guarantees:

Those results illustrate why “playable” needs context. Notebookcheck recorded some games at higher frame rates and Breath of the Wild at a very low in-game average. Tom’s Hardware’s September 28, 2026 report also described Breath of the Wild as unplayable in its snapshot and Animal Crossing as having major issues around 15 FPS. Android Authority’s September 29, 2026 coverage summarized user reports of Cuphead and Hollow Knight at 60 FPS, and Horizon Chase Turbo, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and Metroid Dread around 40–50 FPS. These are user reports as summarized by that outlet, not verified editorial testing. Android Authority’s coverage.

What the current project page lists
As of October 3, 2026, the repository lists version v1.000.040 and documents both a recommended Vulkan renderer and an OpenGL renderer. It also lists per-game resolution and renderer settings, handheld and docked modes, DualSense support, save import and export, and game-file storage on internal storage, M.2, external drives, or USB devices.
That project documentation is newer than some of the reports above. Notebookcheck’s October 3 article described an OpenGL-only emulator without Vulkan support, while Tom’s Hardware’s September 28 article covered an earlier build and firmware testing. For current listed features, the repository is the more direct source; use the articles as dated snapshots for their reported game tests. Current ProsperoEden documentation.

How installation works at a high level
The project README outlines a process for a homebrew-capable PS5. Exact compatibility depends on the console and software setup, so these are the documented stages—not a claim that every PS5 can follow them.
- Install the emulator release files in the PS5 homebrew location using a compatible homebrew setup.
- Provide your own game keys, firmware, and game files. The project release does not supply them.
- Select the folder containing those files in the app, then reopen the app so it can check the setup.
The README says the folder can be stored on internal storage, an M.2 drive, an external drive, or a USB device. It also says the release excludes keys, firmware, games, and other copyrighted console data, and tells users not to download or redistribute those files. Do you need a Switch controller or extra hardware?
The repository documents support for up to four DualSense controllers, game audio, saves, save import and export, and a performance overlay. It does not establish a need for Joy-Cons or a separate Switch controller. Its listed storage options are supported locations, not a requirement to buy additional storage.
