Contemporary reports described a close contest, but the election had not yet taken place: a possible runoff was scheduled for October 25.
Who is running against Lula?
Lula’s main rival in the race is Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator and son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) listed both among the registered presidential candidates. The TSE recorded 12 presidential candidacies for the election, so the contest was not formally limited to these two candidates.
AFP reported that Lula was due to hold a rally in São Paulo city on Saturday, October 3, while Flávio Bolsonaro took part in a motorcycle rally elsewhere in São Paulo state. AFP described São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as important battlegrounds in Brazil’s southeast.
When was Brazil’s election, and could there be a runoff?
The TSE calendar scheduled the first round for October 4, 2026, and a possible second round for October 25. A runoff would be needed if no candidate received more than half the vote, according to the Associated Press’s October 3 preview. At the time of the final campaign events, neither the outcome nor whether a runoff would occur was known.

What were the candidates emphasizing?
AFP’s October 3 account offered a snapshot of campaign messaging, not a comprehensive comparison of candidate platforms.

| Candidate | Campaign themes described by AFP |
|---|---|
| Lula | Brazilian sovereignty amid pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. |
| Flávio Bolsonaro | Hardline security policies, fiscal austerity and the cost of living, alongside criticism of Lula’s competence. |
Those descriptions capture the emphasis in AFP’s report. They do not establish the details of either candidate’s full policy program.
Why was the race described as close?
AFP characterized the contest as close, saying polls indicated neither candidate was likely to win in the first round and describing them as statistically tied for a possible runoff. The Associated Press also discussed a possible second round if no candidate cleared the majority threshold. AFP’s account did not name a pollster, provide field dates or give poll figures, so the descriptions are a contemporaneous pre-election outlook—not a definitive measurement or an election result.

Voter interviews in AFP’s report conveyed the competing concerns but are individual views, not representative polling. Lula supporter Adriana Lima, an early childhood educator, called him “the only president who cared about the people,” and said she opposed Trump treating Brazil “like their backyard.” Accountant Tiago Lorureto described the choice as “a choice between democracy and barbarism.”
At Flávio Bolsonaro’s event, packaging-company owner Marcelo Peressim spoke about household finances: “We work almost 24 hours a day to have a good life and provide a good life for our families… yet there’s never any money left over for us to do anything,” he told AFP. In Rio de Janeiro, care companion Patricia Catherina de Sousa said she remained undecided the day before voting: “It’s a really hard decision to make because it involves our country, our future, you know?”

What controversies did the campaign face?
AFP reported that Flávio Bolsonaro was under investigation over financing for Dark Horse, a biopic about his father. The report attributed funding to jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro and said he was also under investigation in a larger financial scandal; the matter had prompted a public feud in Brazil’s Supreme Court. An investigation is not a finding of guilt, and the election materials cited here do not independently corroborate the allegations.
AFP also described online campaigning by both camps as featuring gaffes, accusations and rumors in polished videos or AI-generated images. The report gave no figures for the reach or prevalence of such content, so its account supports a qualitative description only.

What was known—and not yet known—on October 3?
The final campaign events took place before the scheduled October 4 vote. At that point, reports characterized the race as competitive and outlined the candidates’ contrasting messages, but the cited material did not establish turnout, final vote totals, a winner or whether a runoff would follow. The scheduled dates come from the TSE calendar; any account of results requires information published after voting.
