You can run a long-lived YouTube encoder on Google Cloud, but a standard Cloud Run service request cannot stay open indefinitely: its timeout tops out at 60 minutes. Cloud Run jobs are finite too, with a maximum task duration of seven days—or one hour for GPU tasks. For a continuous stream, start with a Cloud Run worker pool or a continuously running instance, then build in process supervision and YouTube reconnect recovery. Neither a warm instance nor a long-running resource guarantees uninterrupted streaming.

Choose a Cloud Run resource that fits a continuous stream
Cloud Run has different resource types for request-driven applications, finite tasks and background work. Choose based on how the encoder runs—not just on how long you want the YouTube broadcast to last.

Why a standard service request is not a 24/7 encoder
The default service request timeout is five minutes, configurable up to 60 minutes. If the request does not finish by its timeout, Cloud Run closes the connection and the client receives a 504 response. The container may continue working after that connection closes, so a timed-out request can create an orphaned encoder rather than a clean stop. For requests longer than 15 minutes, Google recommends designing for retries and client reconnections. Details are in Configure request timeout for services.
Why a job is not infinite
A Cloud Run job task defaults to 10 minutes and can be configured up to seven days. GPU tasks have a one-hour maximum. Jobs can be useful for finite segments with a planned end and retry behavior, but restarting them does not automatically make the YouTube stream continuous. You must engineer the transition between tasks so a new encoder does not overlap an old one or fail to reconnect. See Create jobs and Set task timeout for jobs.

Plan the stream before deploying
The right container and resource configuration depend on what produces the video. Decide which of these applies before estimating CPU, memory, storage and network use:
- Uploaded or generated media: The container reads media available to it and encodes or relays it. Confirm how that media is supplied and whether it must be stored or fetched during runtime.
- An upstream stream: The container relays a source it can reach. Check that source availability, credentials and network access are handled independently from YouTube.
- Physical production equipment: A camera or capture device is not implied by Cloud Run. If the broadcast depends on local equipment, design how its output reaches the cloud; do not assume a Cloud Run container can access hardware at your home or studio.
Also decide whether one encoder is acceptable or whether the broadcast needs a more resilient design. A single continuously running instance can be simpler, but it is still subject to interruptions. Higher availability requires deliberate supervision, monitoring and recovery rather than relying on a single process.

Set up a restartable encoder and secure the stream key
- Select the runtime pattern. For background work, evaluate a Cloud Run worker pool or continuously running instance. Use a standard service as a controller if you need HTTP endpoints to start, stop or inspect the stream; do not keep a request open as the streaming mechanism.
- Package the encoder or relay. Put the process in a container and make its lifecycle explicit: it should exit visibly on failure, and a supervisor or deployment design should be able to start it again. Avoid designs that leave an encoder running after the controlling request or client has disappeared.
- Store the YouTube stream key as a secret. Inject it through a secret-backed configuration or secret store. Do not put it in source code, container image layers, logs, or a public command example. Limit access to the components and people that need it, and rotate it if it is exposed.
- Create the encoder-based live stream in YouTube. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder. Select the event and obtain its stream-key configuration through YouTube Studio.
- Match the encoder output to YouTube’s current guidance. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the current recommendations applicable to your resolution and frame rate. Verify the ingest and encoding requirements there rather than relying on an old bitrate, protocol or key setting.
- Make restarts recover the broadcast. When the encoder exits or YouTube stops receiving the feed, the system needs to restart the process and re-establish the ingest workflow. Decide how the previous process is confirmed stopped before a replacement starts; otherwise retries can create duplicate encoders.
- Test the failure path. In a controlled stream, verify that the encoder can reconnect after an interruption, that a failed process is detected, and that alerts reach someone who can act. Test secret access, container restarts and the transition after a finite job segment as applicable.
Monitor interruptions and avoid false uptime assumptions
Cloud Run service autoscaling responds to incoming requests and resource utilization; services can scale to zero when no requests arrive. Minimum instances can keep a baseline warm, and Google advises configuring at least one when a service performs background work without handling requests. But minimum instances are best effort and can be restarted at any time. They are not durable process storage or an uptime contract. For a long-running stream, monitor at least the encoder process, failed or disconnected YouTube ingest, and prolonged loss of outbound traffic. Set alerts against signals that indicate the broadcast is no longer reaching YouTube, not only whether the container instance exists. Define what should happen after an alert: restart the process, reconnect the ingest, or require operator intervention.

Estimate Cloud Run cost from the actual deployment
There is no defensible universal monthly price for a 24/7 Cloud Run stream without knowing the selected resource and region, CPU and memory, billing mode, runtime, network egress and resilience design. Estimate those inputs using current Google Cloud pricing or its calculator, then recalculate if you change the configuration.
A software encoder does not automatically require a GPU. If you choose GPU support, Google requires instance-based billing and charges for the GPU over the instance lifecycle; review GPU support for services before including it in a cost estimate.

Common failure modes and fixes
- The service returns 504: The HTTP request exceeded its configured timeout. Treat the service as a controller rather than an indefinitely open streaming request, or use a background-work pattern. Check for an encoder process left running after the client connection closed.
- A job stops after several days: That is consistent with the finite task limit, not a continuous-runtime guarantee. Split work into bounded segments and engineer the handoff, retries and duplicate-start protection.
- The instance is present but the stream is offline: Container existence does not prove the encoder is healthy or connected to YouTube. Alert on process health and ingest failure, then restart or reconnect through the recovery workflow you tested.
- The service scales down when idle: A request-based service can scale to zero when it has no incoming work. Minimum instances can keep a warm baseline, but they are best effort and may restart. Do not treat them as a guarantee that a background process remains alive.
- YouTube does not accept the feed: Check the live event’s encoder setup and confirm the output against YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. Keep the stream key out of logs and inspect secret injection if authentication fails.
- Restarts create duplicate or conflicting streams: Ensure the old encoder has stopped before a retry launches another, and make reconnect behavior idempotent. Test this under controlled conditions before using the design for a production broadcast.
