To stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event from a remotely operated Mac mini, schedule an event in YouTube Studio, send its stream URL and key from a Mac-compatible encoder that can play the file, and start the event after checking its preview. Keep the Mac awake, set up secure remote access, and test the complete setup before relying on it unattended. The Mac mini must remain powered on and connected to the internet while the encoder streams.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. The channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days.
- A Mac mini with a stable internet connection and enough available upload bandwidth for the stream.
- An encoder for macOS that can play the prerecorded file as its output and send the stream to YouTube. YouTube supports encoder software and standalone hardware, but no single Mac app is established as best for every setup.
- A way to administer the Mac mini remotely, such as macOS Screen Sharing or Remote Login, configured for the intended users.
A prerecorded stream is still an encoder-based live stream: the encoder sends the video to YouTube in real time. It is different from uploading a video as a regular YouTube video, and the Mac mini needs to stay available for the duration.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio Live Control Room and create a stream, or open the Manage tab to schedule one.
- Set the event details and scheduled time. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can share, and viewers can opt in to reminders.
- Open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put it in a public post, shared screenshot, or unprotected log.
If this is the channel’s first live stream, enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave that check until the event is about to start.
Configure the Mac mini encoder to play the video
Choose an encoder that fits the job
Select software that runs on the Mac mini and can play the prerecorded file continuously as the encoder’s video and audio output. Check that it supports the file format, resolution, frame rate, scheduling or automation you need, and the ability to keep running under the macOS account used remotely. If you need graphics, transitions, or audio mixing, add them in the encoder or prepare them in the video file before the event. Specific app capabilities vary; confirm them with the encoder’s current documentation.

Enter the YouTube connection details
- In the encoder, choose YouTube or a custom RTMP/RTMPS destination, as appropriate.
- Enter the event’s stream URL and stream key in the matching fields. Use RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted extension to RTMP, if the encoder supports it; YouTube provides the RTMPS address in its stream settings.
- Choose output settings supported by both the encoder and your connection. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations for the protocol, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate for your chosen resolution. Do not assume a resolution will work until you have tested it from the Mac mini’s actual network.
- Load the prerecorded file or playlist and verify that the encoder is set to send that playback—not a camera or an unintended desktop capture—as its stream output.
Keep the stream key out of configuration screenshots and public instructions. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before the next stream.
Keep the Mac mini available and reachable remotely
- On the Mac mini, open macOS System Settings and go to the Energy settings for the desktop Mac. Enable the option to prevent automatic sleep when the display is off. The exact label or location can vary by macOS version.
- Set up Screen Sharing or Remote Login before the Mac is out of reach. Apple’s Mac mini server guidance describes remote management options and warns that sleep can interrupt running tasks and processes. Apple’s Screen Sharing instructions explain how an authorized user can view and control the desktop.
- Test remote access from the location and network you will use during the event. Confirm you can open the encoder, check its status, and recover control without being physically beside the Mac.
Preventing sleep does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. A power or internet outage, encoder crash, operating-system update, account challenge, or failed remote-access connection can still interrupt an unattended event. For an important stream, arrange a way to monitor it and someone able to intervene if needed.

Test the stream, then start the scheduled event
- Test well before the event—YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand. Use the Mac mini and the same internet connection planned for the live stream.
- Measure available upload bandwidth on that connection. YouTube advises leaving about 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate; a speed test taken elsewhere does not establish the Mac mini’s available upload capacity.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled start time. YouTube recommends starting it 15 minutes before the event.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check that the video is correct, audio is present and in sync, and stream health is acceptable. If the preview or stream health indicates a problem, resolve it before starting the event.
- When the preview is ready, start the scheduled event in Live Control Room. Monitor the stream during playback, including after remote access has been handed off or disconnected.
- When the program is finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder as directed by YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a guarantee of an archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not rely on automatic archiving for longer events.
Mac mini software or a standalone encoder?
| Approach | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mac mini plus encoder software | The Mac plays or assembles the prerecorded program and sends an encoder feed to YouTube. | Mac compatibility, dependable file playback, scheduling or automation, stream-key handling, resource use, RTMPS support, remote control and recovery, and whether required features are included. |
| AJA HELO Plus | YouTube lists this standalone H.264 encoder and describes optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. | Confirm current availability, total cost, supported media and storage, scheduling controls, remote monitoring, and stream settings. YouTube’s description establishes the basic use case, not a buyer’s comparison or current marketplace availability. |
If you already have a Mac mini, software is a practical starting point; the AJA device is an optional hardware alternative, not a requirement. A hardware encoder changes the equipment involved but does not, by itself, establish uninterrupted operation.

Troubleshooting common problems
The scheduled event has no preview
- Confirm the encoder is running and sending to the correct event’s stream URL and key.
- Check that the event is the one currently open in Live Control Room and that the encoder is using the correct output profile.
- Allow for first-time channel enablement, which YouTube says can take up to 24 hours. Also check channel verification and live-stream restrictions.
The stream looks unstable or drops frames
- Compare the encoder’s total streaming bitrate with upload capacity measured on the Mac mini’s actual network; leave the approximately 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- Reduce output bitrate or resolution in line with YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, then test again.
- Check whether other devices or processes are using the connection or the Mac’s resources.
The video or audio is wrong
- Verify the correct file or playlist is loaded and that the encoder is sending its playback rather than a camera or desktop source.
- Check the encoder’s selected audio input, output levels, and synchronization in the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
The Mac mini becomes unreachable or stops streaming
- Confirm the Mac is powered, awake, and connected to the network; Apple notes that sleep can interrupt running tasks.
- Use the tested remote-management path to inspect the encoder and restart it if appropriate. If remote access is unavailable, a remote stream cannot be recovered from the Mac unless someone can intervene through another path.
- For critical events, arrange a person who can reach the machine or another recovery plan; the cited platform and Apple guidance do not promise automatic recovery from these failures.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos running without leaving a Mac mini on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera.
