What might robotic lunar-cave exploration involve?
A separate NASA TechPort record describes Spelunker, a prototype concept for exploring a lunar cave. It is useful context for the engineering problem, but there is no evidence in the available PRISM announcement that the selected PSI-led team will use Spelunker.
Spelunker’s proposed sequence
- Land safely near the rim of a lunar skylight.
- Lower a power and communications hub into the cave on a tether.
- Send autonomous hybrid driving-and-hopping robots to explore inside.
The NASA TechPort project record presents this as a proposed architecture, not confirmation of the new team’s mission design. The distinction matters: the PRISM selection is known, but its specific deployment plan is not.

Why are caves difficult for robots to explore?
NASA JPL’s Planetary Cave Rovers project describes several constraints that shape robotic cave missions:
- Communications: Radio links can become intermittent or unavailable below the surface, complicating control and data return.
- Power: Sunlight does not reach cave interiors, while battery-powered exploration can be short-lived.
- Unknown terrain: Robots must handle uncharted, potentially rough terrain, which increases demands on mobility and autonomy.
- Data return: Science data must reach a communications path back to the surface, even as links and rover positions change.
