FFmpeg gives you more direct control, but you must configure it and keep its host and stream operating. The choice is about who handles the ongoing work—not a guarantee that one approach is more reliable or cheaper.
What “easier” means for a 24/7 stream
YouTube accepts streams from an encoder, which can be software or standalone hardware. In either workflow, the encoder sends video to YouTube using an ingestion URL and stream key. YouTube does not require a particular encoder brand; it does recommend RTMPS and publishes supported formats and settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

When FFmpeg is the better fit
Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable configuring an encoder and can take responsibility for the machine, network, process supervision, and troubleshooting. It suits operators who value direct control over encoding and media handling, or already have a maintained server and monitoring workflow.
FFmpeg is software, not a hosting plan: using it does not remove the need for a continuously available host and connection. Google Cloud’s documentation lists FFmpeg as one example of software that can send an input stream, but its Live Stream API is a separate infrastructure product: it accepts live SRT or RTMP input and transcodes it to HLS or DASH. What you need to operate the FFmpeg workflow
- Activate YouTube Live. If you have not streamed before, YouTube says first-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours. Start activation in advance rather than planning a launch at the last minute. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Create or select the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube’s live control room, configure the stream and obtain its ingestion URL and stream key. The exact labels and flow can change; follow the current YouTube instructions for your account.
- Prepare the media and host. Make sure the prerecorded file is accessible to the machine that will run FFmpeg, and plan for the host and internet connection to remain available continuously. Decide how the process will be restarted and how you will notice a failure.
- Configure the encoder output against YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate listed for your chosen resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings table; do not assume a bitrate from another resolution applies.
- Use the secure ingestion endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its RTMPS guidance calls for a valid endpoint and path, a connection on port 443, and correct server hostname/SNI handling. Configure FFmpeg for the endpoint and settings YouTube currently provides, rather than copying a key or URL from an old broadcast. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Do not expose it in screenshots, public code, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder configuration.
- Verify the stream before relying on it. Check YouTube’s preview and stream status, confirm audio and video are present, and verify that playback continues after the initial connection. Your operational plan should include alerts or regular checks and a way to restart the encoder or restore the connection.
This is the configuration path, not a copy-and-run FFmpeg command: YouTube’s settings depend on the selected resolution, frame rate, media, and current ingestion details. No single command should be treated as verified for every 24/7 setup.
When a cloud streaming service is easier
A cloud service is a reasonable default when your goal is to keep prerecorded video on air but you do not want a computer at home or in an office to run the encoder continuously. The provider takes responsibility for the cloud-side streaming workload; you should still check what its plan actually covers before relying on it.

Check YouTube’s rules and archive behavior
Copyright and content rights
Before looping a recording, make sure you have the rights needed to stream its video and audio on YouTube. A 24/7 schedule does not make copyrighted material safe to use. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization requirements for your specific content; do not assume that a cloud service or encoder grants permission.
Archives are not a full-day backup
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. Common problems and what to check
- The encoder cannot connect: confirm the current YouTube stream URL and key, RTMPS endpoint and path, port 443 connectivity, and hostname/SNI handling. Replace a key that has been exposed.
- YouTube shows an unstable or missing stream: check the host’s internet connection, encoder process, and YouTube stream status. For FFmpeg, restore the process and connection; for a cloud provider, consult its current recovery instructions and support.
- Video quality is poor or the stream is rejected: compare the output codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current table. A two-second keyframe interval is recommended; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings
- The stream ends but the archive is incomplete: check its duration. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a promise that one 24-hour broadcast will be saved in full.
- A new channel is not yet able to go live: allow for first-time activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
How to choose
- Choose FFmpeg if you want encoding control and can maintain the host, connection, process, monitoring, and recovery routine.
- Choose a cloud service if avoiding a continuously running machine is more important than controlling the hosting stack. Before subscribing, verify YouTube support, prerecorded looping, recovery behavior, supported quality, archive options, current pricing, and terms.
