First determine whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows over time. For a measured, fixed offset, FFmpeg’s -itsoffset can delay the affected input; for separate inputs with valid start timestamps from the same clock, -isync may align their starts. Neither option is a universal cure for changing clock drift. Measure the problem, choose the adjustment that matches it, and verify the result in the actual stream.

Work out whether the problem is a fixed offset or drift

Watch or listen to a local preview and, if possible, the YouTube stream. Note whether audio leads or lags the video, estimate the gap, and check whether it stays about the same or increases during the stream. A fixed gap suggests a starting offset; a gap that changes points toward continuing timing differences that a one-time offset will not establish as fixed.

The FFmpeg Project’s ffplay documentation says the -stats option reports audio/video synchronization drift. You can use it while previewing a source, for example:

ffplay -stats INPUT

Replace INPUT with the input you want to inspect. The documented default master clock for ffplay is audio. Its statistics help you observe playback behavior; they do not identify which device, clock, or timestamp caused a mismatch. Confirm any adjustment by checking the complete streaming path as well as a local preview.

Record the command, inputs, and timing details

Before changing the command, preserve the exact FFmpeg version, full command, complete console output, input order and formats, stream mapping, reported start times, and relevant warnings. These details affect how FFmpeg interprets timestamps and which options apply to which input. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

  • Identify the audio and video sources and note their order in the command.
  • Record whether each input reports a start time and any timestamp-related warnings.
  • For separate live capture devices, check whether they derive timestamps from the same clock source.
  • Measure the audio lead or lag near the beginning and later in the stream.

Input order is not, by itself, a general explanation. A 2020 FFmpeg-user mailing-list report described roughly half a second of audio delay in one webcam and PulseAudio setup after input order was changed. That is an anecdote about one configuration, not evidence that placing audio before video universally causes desynchronization. See the mailing-list report as a clue to reproduce and measure, not as a rule.

Correct a fixed offset with -itsoffset

The FFmpeg Project’s ffmpeg documentation describes -itsoffset as “Set the input time offset.” It adds the stated duration to timestamps of the input it precedes. A positive offset delays that input.

Use a measured value and put the option immediately before the input it should affect. This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested universal fix:

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
ffmpeg -i video_source -itsoffset OFFSET -i audio_source
  ... output

Replace OFFSET and the input names with values and sources from your setup. If audio is early, a positive offset on the audio input may help. If audio is already late, a positive audio offset makes that relationship worse; the target input and sign matter. Confirm the option’s behavior in the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version, then measure the stream again.

Consider -isync only when its timing requirements fit

-isync adjusts timestamps of one input by the difference between its start time and a reference input’s start time. FFmpeg’s documentation says expected results depend on the source timestamps of both inputs deriving from the same clock source. If a starting timestamp is unavailable, FFmpeg makes no adjustment.

  • Get the best out of your Microphones - M-Track Duo’s transparent Crystal Preamps guarantee optimal sound from all your microphones including condenser mics
  • The MPC Production Experience - Includes MPC Beats Software complete with the essential production tools from Akai Professional

When using -isync, identify the reference input and verify that both inputs have usable start timestamps and share a timing source. The documentation also specifies that if -copyts is enabled, -start_at_zero must also be set. Timestamp-preservation options change FFmpeg’s handling of timestamps, so do not add them casually; check the exact option semantics for your installed version.

If the gap grows, investigate ongoing timing differences

A fixed offset changes the starting timestamp relationship; it does not show that independent clocks will stay aligned. Compare the observed drift near the start and later, inspect timestamp continuity, and investigate the capture devices and their timing. Test a single change at a time and verify the actual output.

A 2020 FFmpeg-user discussion includes an example using aresample=async=1, but a historical example is not a universal live-stream recommendation. Do not add it merely because audio and video are out of sync: validate the filter’s behavior and side effects against your FFmpeg version and the timing problem you have measured. The discussion also emphasizes sharing the full command and uncut output when diagnosing an issue; see the FFmpeg-user discussion.

Choose an approach based on what you observed

Observation Candidate action Important limitation
Audio/video gap is fixed and measured Apply -itsoffset to the input that needs delay A wrong sign or target input increases the error; a fixed offset does not resolve ongoing drift. (FFmpeg Project, ffmpeg documentation)
Separate inputs have usable start timestamps and share a clock source Consider -isync with the correct reference input Expected behavior depends on the shared clock and available start timestamps; observe the documented -copyts interaction. (FFmpeg Project, ffmpeg documentation)
You need to observe playback drift Use ffplay -stats Statistics show playback behavior, not its root cause; verify the streaming path too. (FFmpeg Project, ffplay documentation)
The gap changes during operation Inspect capture clocks and timestamp progression; evaluate resampling only against observed behavior A mailing-list example does not establish a universal filter setting or a YouTube requirement. (FFmpeg-user, 2020 discussion)

Do not assume a YouTube-specific encoding rule

Audio/video synchronization and YouTube ingest requirements are separate questions. The historical 2020 forum discussion about adding silent audio is not current official YouTube guidance. Verify platform settings against current YouTube documentation for your stream configuration rather than treating that old advice as a rule. No current official YouTube ingest requirement is established here.
