To stream a local playlist to YouTube Live with OBS, add the files to OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, choose whether to loop or shuffle them, then connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its server URL and stream key. Start the encoder, check the YouTube preview and stream health, and only then start the event. This method uses media files stored on your computer; it does not establish that a YouTube-hosted playlist URL can be used as an OBS playlist.
Before you start: check your YouTube channel
- Your channel must be verified, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- If this is your first time streaming, activate live streaming in advance. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube’s general guidance says live streamers must be at least 16.
These are YouTube’s stated general requirements; check the current YouTube live-streaming help before an event in case eligibility or interface details have changed.
Set up a local playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. See the OBS guide to media sources.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene’s Sources panel, select +, choose VLC Video, and open its properties. Add the local files in the order you want them to play.
- Choose playback behavior. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart the list when it reaches the end. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if you want the order randomized. Confirm the source is visible in the scene where you intend it to play.
- Check the scene and audio. Add any overlays or still images as separate scene elements. Play a test file and confirm its audio reaches OBS’s stream mix; check that the media is visible and correctly framed in the preview.
For one file rather than a playlist, OBS’s standard Media Source supports a single media file and a Loop option. Use VLC Video when you need multiple files in a sequence or a shuffled list.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or manage the stream event. The exact controls may vary as YouTube updates Studio; use its current live streaming setup guidance.
- Copy the event’s stream URL/server and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your event.
- Start the encoder from OBS. Check that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed, inspect the preview and stream health, and then begin the event in YouTube.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP, for ingestion. For general encoder settings, YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by both your encoder and your upload connection. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates guidance for the current values relevant to your chosen resolution and frame rate.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Plan for upload capacity above the combined stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom as well as a reliable connection. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful option if your computer and router support it, but it cannot make an internet service with insufficient upload capacity adequate.
HLS is another ingestion option in supported workflows and with supported codecs, but it has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion. YouTube’s HLS workflow calls for TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. A normal local OBS playlist does not need HLS; use RTMPS unless your workflow specifically calls for HLS. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
Test and monitor the broadcast
- Run a test with representative motion and audio, rather than checking only a still or silent section.
- Confirm the YouTube preview appears and the stream health is acceptable before starting the event.
- Set up the encoder well ahead of the scheduled start and start it before the event, as YouTube advises.
- Monitor picture and sound during the stream. A successful initial preview does not guarantee that a changing network or playback issue will not affect the broadcast later.
Copyright and India-specific considerations
Include only material you have the necessary rights to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent an interruption. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright and resolve rights questions with the relevant rights holders before broadcasting.

YouTube’s live-stream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content and must comply with applicable laws and any licensing, registration, or notification requirements in the territory where the stream is available. That does not amount to a complete India-specific legal checklist: obligations can depend on the content and its use. A technical OBS setup guide cannot determine whether a particular Indian copyright, music licensing, broadcast, or other legal requirement applies to your stream. Read the applicable YouTube terms and seek qualified advice for content-specific legal questions.
Troubleshooting common playlist-stream problems
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources
Install VLC, then restart OBS and check the Sources menu again. Match the VLC architecture to OBS: a 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC for the source to appear.
The playlist stops at the last item
Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. Check that the source is still visible in the active scene and that the files in the list are available.

The files play in the wrong order
Reorder the local media items in the VLC Video source properties. Keep Shuffle Playlist off when you need a fixed sequence.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed
Check that OBS has the correct event’s server URL and stream key, and that the encoder is running. Confirm the event is ready in Live Control Room and inspect its preview and stream-health feedback. Do not share the key while troubleshooting.
The stream buffers or loses health
Compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Use a resolution and frame rate the connection can sustain, check connection reliability, and run another representative test before the event.

Audio or picture is missing from the preview
Check that the VLC Video source is visible in the active scene, that the intended media is playing, and that its audio is routed to the stream mix. Test with a representative clip and verify the result in YouTube’s preview before starting.
A copyright match interrupts the stream
Remove or replace material unless you have the necessary streaming rights. If you are licensed, contact the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a licence alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
