Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can stream from a Raspberry Pi 5 to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but the right setup depends on whether your source is a Pi camera, USB camera, file, or separate microphone. This guide uses a Pi camera as its main example, explains the YouTube output settings to target, and shows how to test safely before making a stream public. Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so plan for CPU load and latency rather than assuming the Pi has a hardware H.264 encoder.
Choose the capture path before building the FFmpeg command
There is no single FFmpeg input command that works for every camera and audio device. First decide what FFmpeg will receive: a Pi camera feed, a USB camera, a video file, or a feed that already contains encoded video. Also decide whether audio is embedded in the source or comes from a separate microphone.
- Pi camera: Use Raspberry Pi’s current camera stack,
rpicam-vid, for capture. Itslibavbackend can encode audio and video and save or stream them over a network; hardware H.264 is used when present. Do not assume every Pi 5 capture path has hardware encoding. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation. - USB camera: Confirm the device is detected and determine whether it supplies raw video or encoded video. The device name and supported pixel formats vary; inspect the device and the installed FFmpeg input options instead of copying a device name from a generic example.
- Video file: FFmpeg can read a file, but a file’s codec, frame rate, duration, and audio track determine whether it can be copied directly or needs conversion. A file does not automatically behave like a live camera source.
- Separate microphone: Select and map the actual audio input on your Pi, then test it alongside moving video. Device identifiers cannot be inferred from a generic recipe.
For any source, the processing path is capture or input → map video and optional audio → copy compatible encoded video or encode it → encode audio in a supported format when present → mux and send to YouTube. Use video passthrough only if the incoming bitstream and timing already meet your target output requirements. Otherwise, re-encode. FFmpeg options depend on the installed build, so check the relevant local help before relying on an encoder or input flag. FFmpeg documentation.
Account for Raspberry Pi 5 encoding latency
Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” It warns that software encoding can add frame latency in real-time applications. For rpicam-vid, the --low-latency option encodes frames more quickly, with trade-offs: slightly lower coding efficiency, less efficient use of multiple CPU cores, and potentially a slightly lower maximum frame rate. Raspberry Pi says 1080p30 remains readily achievable, but that is not a guarantee for every scene, configuration, or simultaneous workload. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Start with a conservative target such as 720p30 or 1080p30. If latency or dropped frames appear, reduce one of resolution, frame rate, or bitrate at a time and observe the Pi’s behavior and YouTube’s stream-health messages. The --low-latency option is specifically relevant to the rpicam-vid path; it is not a universal FFmpeg switch.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event and retrieve its current ingest address and stream key.
- Choose the RTMPS ingest option when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. YouTube Live encoder settings.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it in an article, commit it to a public repository, or leave it in a shared command history. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls before streaming again.
- Use the exact endpoint and path supplied for your event. For RTMPS, YouTube’s API guidance specifies port 443 and requires the correct hostname/SNI for authentication; a URL with a superficially similar hostname or a missing path may fail. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance.
Check how the installed FFmpeg build handles the chosen RTMPS endpoint and TLS before going live. A correctly formed URL, supported protocol, and required server name all matter; do not substitute a generic RTMP address for the event’s current ingest details.

Use YouTube-compatible video, audio, and bitrate settings
For a compatibility-oriented FFmpeg output, target H.264 video, AAC audio if you have audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube also accepts H.265 or AV1 video and MP3 audio, but H.264 with AAC is a straightforward choice. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube Live encoder settings.
| Target | YouTube guidance |
| 720p30 H.264 video | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p30 H.264 video | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; maximum 4 seconds |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; AAC supports 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS |
| Ingest | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
These bitrate figures are YouTube’s current published guidance, accessed 2026-10-03; they are not measurements of what a Pi 5 can encode. Choose a bitrate that your upstream connection can sustain with room for fluctuations. An upload speed test and a rehearsal with representative movement and sound are more useful than choosing the highest listed value automatically. YouTube Live encoder settings.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
FFmpeg command-line options and available encoders depend on the installed build and input. Before assembling a command, inspect the local help for the input and encoder you intend to use, and verify that the source’s timestamps, frame rate, codecs, and audio mapping match the output settings. The general FFmpeg manual describes command structure; it does not establish which options a particular Raspberry Pi OS package includes. FFmpeg documentation.
Build and test the stream without risking a public broadcast
- Verify capture first. Confirm that the camera or file produces the expected video and that the intended audio input is present. For a Pi camera using
rpicam-vid, check the capture andlibavoptions available in the installed camera software. - Choose the output path. Map video and optional audio explicitly. Copy video only when the incoming encoded video and timing already meet the chosen YouTube target; otherwise re-encode. Encode audio as AAC if audio is included and the source needs conversion.
- Set conservative parameters. Start at 720p30 or 1080p30 according to camera capability, Pi load, and network upload capacity. Use CBR, a two-second GOP/keyframe interval, and a bitrate within YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution.
- Run an unlisted or private rehearsal. Include representative motion and sound, then check Live Control Room for stream-health messages, connection stability, and audio/video sync.
- Adjust one variable at a time. If the feed is unstable, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate; if the image is delayed, investigate the capture and encoding path, including
rpicam-vid --low-latencywhere applicable. - Switch to the intended audience setting only after the rehearsal succeeds. Recheck that the event’s ingest address and stream key are the ones currently shown for that event.
This is a documentation-based configuration guide, not a claim that a particular command has been tested on every Pi 5, camera, or FFmpeg package. Validate command flags and behavior on the actual device before relying on the setup for a scheduled broadcast.

Troubleshoot common Pi 5 YouTube stream problems
Video arrives with too much delay
Pi 5 software encoding can increase real-time frame latency. If the source is a Pi camera, test rpicam-vid --low-latency and evaluate the documented efficiency and throughput trade-offs. Also reduce the target frame rate or resolution if the workload is too demanding.
Frames drop or YouTube reports an unstable stream
Check available upload capacity and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and repeat a representative rehearsal. The platform’s bitrate recommendation assumes the connection can sustain the stream; it does not guarantee that a particular network can.

RTMPS connection or TLS authentication fails
Confirm that you are using the event’s RTMPS endpoint and complete path, port 443, and the correct hostname/SNI. Check for URL transcription mistakes and confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the relevant protocol and TLS behavior. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance.
There is no sound or audio is out of sync
Confirm that the selected audio device exists, that FFmpeg maps it, and that audio is encoded as a format YouTube accepts. Test speech or other representative sound together with moving video; a video-only test will not reveal microphone or synchronization problems.
FFmpeg rejects an input or encoder option
Inspect the local FFmpeg version and its input and encoder help. Package builds can differ, so an option listed in a general example may not be available in the FFmpeg build installed on your Pi. Adjust the command to the capabilities reported on that device rather than assuming a particular encoder is present. FFmpeg documentation.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
A technically healthy stream can still raise copyright or channel-policy issues. Use video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current rules for the specific material and channel. Replaying prerecorded content does not by itself establish that a channel complies with YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies. Review the content and rights before scheduling a public or recurring broadcast; Stream health only indicates technical delivery, not rights clearance.
