Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a mostly static or slow-moving 24/7 YouTube stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps. Choose 60 fps when smoother motion matters and your encoder and upload connection can sustain the additional workload reliably. The best setting is the one your setup can maintain without interruptions—not simply the highest resolution or frame rate.
Recommended OBS settings for a 24/7 stream
For H.264 ingest, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Those are encoder bitrate recommendations, not minimum internet upload speeds or guarantees of a stable stream. YouTube advises choosing a quality your available connection can reliably deliver, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health.
Use 1080p30 as a practical starting point for static scenes, artwork, slides, or slow movement. Use 1080p60 for content where motion benefits from smoother playback, provided your computer can encode it and your connection can sustain the bitrate. This is a practical recommendation based on YouTube’s published ingest guidance, not a special OBS or YouTube preset.
Choose resolution and frame rate for the content
When 30 fps makes sense
At 30 fps, the encoder processes fewer frames each second than at 60 fps. It is usually a sensible choice for a continuous stream built around still imagery, a slowly changing scene, or other content where smooth fast movement is not central.

When 60 fps is worth considering
Use 60 fps when the picture contains movement that viewers benefit from seeing more smoothly. YouTube’s listed maximum live frame rate is 60 fps. Moving from 30 to 60 fps raises the recommended H.264 bitrate at 1080p from 14 Mbps to 17 Mbps, and also increases the work required of the encoder.
Compare YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations
| Resolution | 30 fps | 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 8 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p | 21 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 42 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates for live ingest, not measurements of a particular OBS setup or promises of viewer quality. YouTube lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not apply this table to those codecs. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers; the incoming resolution is not necessarily the only playback format available. Its guidance does not establish a universal viewer preference for one resolution. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Set the encoder and stream parameters
YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. For a typical SDR stream, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. HDR requires different settings; use those only if you are producing HDR content.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: no more than 60 fps.
- Transport: RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transport.
- Bitrate: select the recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not treat it as a home upload-speed guarantee.
OBS is a software encoder running on a computer. YouTube does not specify a universal CPU, GPU, or memory requirement for OBS in this guidance, so there is no single hardware threshold that guarantees a stable 24/7 broadcast. Test on the computer and connection you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder workflow and setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Test before leaving the stream running
- Set up the intended output: choose your resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Test representative content: include movement and audio similar to what the 24/7 stream will actually contain. A static test image alone will not show how motion behaves.
- Check YouTube’s stream health: start a test broadcast and review the health indicators and messages before relying on the stream unattended.
- Adjust for reliability: if the stream is unstable, reduce the output quality to a level your connection and encoder can maintain, then test again.
- Monitor after launch: check stream health and messages during the broadcast, especially after changing settings or the source content.
YouTube Help’s encoder-settings page says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube’s guidance also recommends testing with realistic audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
Plan for the archive as well as the live picture
A 24/7 broadcast has a separate archive limitation that resolution and frame rate cannot solve: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If keeping a copy matters, record locally as a backup or use shorter broadcast segments. Read YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
